I gave my son, as a Christmas gift, a 16:9 monitor. The problem is that he sees the image as a 4:3 image, extended laterally and totally unreadable.
I have no possibility of adjusting the screen to a 4:3 size. Is there any way to adjust the system settings to a 16:9 screen?
When I boot to Kubuntu 9.10, it asks me to login and I do, But then It just doesn't boot.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI saw some pictures of Kubuntu online and thought it looked awesome. I installed it from Gnome using the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop". It installed fine, no errors. I logged off and picked Plasma Workspace or whatever its called from the menu and it showed a black screen for about 7 seconds, then showed a clear bar with a hard drive icon fading in. Then it crashed back to the login screen. I rebooted and tried again: same thing. I installed xfce and it works perfectly. Gnome still works. Ditto for Unity. But kde keeps crashing. PS: Graphics card is an ATI Radeon.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed my first distro, Gnome Ubuntu Linux 10.04 via WUBI dual-booting alongside my Windows. I decided to try the other desktop environments. So I installed Kubuntu-Desktop (KDE) and Xubuntu-Desktop (XFCE) using Synaptic Package Manager.
However, Kubuntu KDE changed the boot splash screen into a from the default Ubuntu one, to the Kubuntu one. Also Xubuntu XFCE changed the log-in screen to the Xubuntu one. I DO NOT want these changes. I just wanted Normal Ubuntu-branded Ubuntu Linux with the option of logging in into the desktop environment of my choice.
However, I anyways went for reinstalling kubuntu 10.04. The installation went fine. It asked to reboot at the end, which I did. After the reboot, it gives me the login screen. After filling up the details there it again shows me the same login screen. This goes on forever.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell dimension 8300 dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. I installed BURG on it since I didnt like the text grub style. Problem is I cant change the splash screen no matter what I do, or changes I make. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 and my video card is an Nvidia card.
Originally the splash screen was a purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and some dots on it. After installing the plymouth themes, now it has changed to a blue screen with Kubuntu(?) on it... Id like to know whats wrong and how can I change the splash screen?
UPDATE: Ok I went to synaptic and saw plymouth.kubuntu-logo and kubuntu-text were installed and enabled (had litle ubuntu logo to the side). So I removed those 2 files then did a reboot. Now im back to the purple screen with ubuntu 10.10 white text and the dots but I still cant change the splash screen...
I just installed Ubuntu on my home desktop computer this morning, and I am having fun exploring this new alternative to Microsoft. I originally tried to install Kubuntu, but after multiple unsuccessful attempts I gave Ubuntu a try and it worked like a charm.
Here's what I did: First, I burned the installation CD. Then I booted from that CD and began the installation process. When the Kubuntu desktop came up, and the icons started to appear, the screen suddenly went black. After that it flashed back and forth between the partially loaded desktop and the black screen.

I have Laptop sony VPCEA22EN. I have installed ubuntu 10.04. it was working fine. Then i installed kubuntu-desktop. it was working fine. i tried to some of bugs using kubuntu update manager. i restarted the laptop.
after that im not able to logon on kubuntu. on kubuntu logon screen i'm unable to enter username n password. Keyboard and mouse is not detected but, usb mouse works.
i tried ctrl+alt+esc, this combination doesnt work while booting. i can't use this combination on log-on screen because keyboard is not detected.
I ran Kubuntu 10.4 from the Live CD and from the start The screen was automatically set to be as dim as possible, but in the power manager the brightness is set to be as bright as possible. Moving around the slider doesn't do nothing, and when I click the battery icon in the tray, it shows another brightness slider that's set to dim as possible, when I move it around it has no effect and just goes back to where it was when I close the popup window. Right now I'm running from the livedisk on an IBM T42 thinkpad laptop.How do I fix this, is it a hardware issue, I've had problems with my graphics card in the past with compositing in X/Ubuntu.I've found some text files for the backlight, they're all set to 0 which I believe is the problem, however even though I'm running the File Manager as root with kdesudo and the permissions are set to read and write for the owner, who is root, I can't save any changes.

Now when I start the computer and select ubuntu it goes to a log in screen. I type in my user name and password and all I get is a terminal screen in the top left. If I close this I go through a 'broken screen' and back to the sign in.

Often, after some heavy working, my laptop works very slowly and suddenly when loading something, it locks and white lines turns all over the screen, just like curtains. Linux jumps out of KDE and logs in automatically. That's very anoying since all my work is lost and it turns back to the previously saved session.
Also, often when I boot, the load screen is also mmissed up with those white lines. The only thing I can do then is to reboot.
I tried to re-install kubuntu (in first instance, i upgraded in kpackage, then i re-installed with formatting the root en swap partitions).
I don't know how to solve it. Only thing that seems reasonable now is to downgrade, since i didn't have this problem on 9.10 (fyi: I have a dell inspiron 1501 with ATI Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory video card, formerly i had problems to have good graphic drivers for it on previeous versions of kubuntu (some 3d games didn't work), maybe this has someting to do with it?)

Instead the boot screen (image attached so you know what I mean) remains displayed for the entire installation. View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi installed kubuntu 9.04 yesterday and updated it with everything that was available, i have ati radeon xpress 1100 and i got everything running fine including kwin effects but i have a small problem i cant figure out how to fix:
When i run glxgears and put any window on top of it, i can still see the 3d gears rolling and i think this same problem is responsible for occasional artifacts on the screen. Its a very minor problem but i would like to see if fixed because i cannot use google earth properly, it seems that any 3d application likes to be focused on the screen, its like they flicker while being overlaid on top of everything.
Also i read the countless threads here complaining about not being able to use fglrx etc because of updated xorg. Well the reason im using 9.04 is because my wireless card alfa awus036h does not work with kernel > 2.6.31 and i have already tried kubuntu 9.10 on this laptop i wasnt having any problem with the display. All the kwin effects ran fine and no distortions of any kind. Seems there is some bug in 9.04.
Not a major issue but my Ubuntu boot screen change to the old classic Orange theme after i installed Kubuntu on a different drive and ofcourse a new Grub loader as the Kubuntu installation prompted. It can't be because of the Kubuntu installation but i can't find any other reason for that to happen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI cannot use several keys (1,`, q, a, z & Esc) on my keyboard.I have just installed Kubuntu 11.04, AMD64 version via Wubi. Everything went well w/o any errors. At 1st boot, I also logged in w/o errors, and then tried some apps for Office & Network and shut down. The keyboard was still alright at that time. However, The problem started on the 2nd boot after the installation. Those keys do not response in Kubuntu & Windows 7 login screen and even in my PC's BIOS setup.
My laptop model is Dell Lattitude E6410, core i5, Intel HD Graphics, WD HDD 160GB. And I installed on the other partition, not my Windows one.
I have two OS in my system. Windows& and Kubuntu. Both are in separate hard disks. I was using both. In between i have upgraded my system. now when i am giving priority to hard disk containing kubuntu, i can login to kubuntu, but cant get in to windows7. i have upgraded grub but not working. when i am giving priority to hard disk containig windows7 it enters and work properly. but not working in the previous.

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?
I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?
After the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 resulted in a black screen after reboot, I decided to don't waste more time, backed up my data and made a fresh installation.
First Issue [solved]: After I inserted the Kubuntu 10.04 Live-CD and started the system, I got to the CD's boot-mode selection menu. When I selected "Install Kubuntu", I got the Kubuntu bootscreen, but the system hang up then. I was able to solve this problem through pressing F6 in the boot-mode selection menu and setting "nomodeset". I also had to remove "quit splash" from the boot-entry line. Afterwards the installation process was fine.
Second Issue: I wanted to boot my new installated system, but, off course, got the blank screen again. So I edited the Grub-entry for recovery mode in the grubmenu (replaced "quit splash" with "nomodeset") and booted into recovery mode. I selected "netroot", and installed the proprietary nvidia-drivers with "apt-get install nvidia-current". Afterwards I ran "nvidia-xconfig" to generate the xorg.conf. To solve the blank screen issue, I edited the /boot/grub/grub.cfg the same way I described above and rebooted. Now I don't get a blank screen anymore, but I also don't get an XServer. The system boots now (off course without splash and "unquit"), but drops me into the tty1... When I type "sudo service kdm start", I get into KDM and can login, but I get many errors and crash-reports there. I also don't have any internet. I only have internet when booting in recovery mode and select "netroot".
I'm a bit surprised that Ubuntu released a LTS-Version that causes so much trouble (I've searched the forum and it seems that I'm not the only one with such big problems). Has Ubuntu droped support for NVidia-users?
