I went to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and a window popped-up: "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system". So I selected the "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [RECOMMENDED]". But when I try to "Activate" I get this following error:
"failed to fetch [URL] temporary failure resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com"

Aug 18, 2011As the title says, I have tried both of them and they both freeze my system with no apparent reason. They freeze by just looking at them in the fist few minutes after startup and a hard reboot is needed. So I keep coming back to 11.6. Does anyone else have the same problem or is it just my system? By the way I have an HD 6970 in an AMD CPU based system running squeeze. And the reason why I keep installing new drivers and don't stick with 11.6 is a futile hope that anti-aliasing will work with compiz enabled.

Anyway, I cleverly installed the most recent drivers for my graphics card, and it killed Ubuntu - it won't start now. This happens on Windows, too, but Windows will System Restore for me. How might I fix this in Ubuntu?
I can choose Ubuntu from the grub menu, but then the screen goes blank, the fan on my computer goes into overdrive, and nothing happens.
Am currently running my Karmic Koala from LiveCD...

Aug 10, 2010I have tried several times to get Ubuntu to work on my SX3, and I gave it a serious attempt today to see if I could get things working, I'm getting a new hard drive so this is Ubuntu's last chance - for a while at least.
I've gotten past all the minor inconveniences and has it set up like I want it, but my problem is drivers. If I go to System - Drivers I get a grand list of 0 drivers on my system. Things like the touchpad, bluetooth and WLAN are working, but any function keys, brightness control keys etc are useless. In addition it either doesn't have, or is running on really bad drivers for my screen and graphic card. My screen comes up as "unknown" - though it's usable. Scrolling is not a matter of scrolling, but "jumping", and the computer is generally kinda sluggish (which is odd since it's running quite fine on Windows 7) and attempting to play any video file, on any media player - or even ..... - gives you a fps of about 0.1. (sound's working perfectly though)
I noticed some thread about laptops that are incompatible with Ubuntu somewhere, Is there anything that can be done about this or should I just give up and go back to Windows 7? Kohjinsha has drivers for XP, Vista, and 7, as a side-note, if it matters.

Mar 14, 2016i just migrated from fedora to debian, and i already love this system. it only seems that i am facing a serious problem with this graphic card.running on debian 8.3.booting my system, i do get this message:

after that the system seems to run normally except of the fact that it doesn't look well and i cannot set the appropriate resolution for my monitor.

already tried both, the open source and the proprietary drivers, and both cause serious problems.

after restarting the system i get a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner, and that's it.

but after restarting the system my monitor goes into some sort of a "sleep monitor mode", and that's it.in both cases i wasn't able to boot the system through the recovery mode, so i didn't know what else to do and re-installed the whole system each and every time i tried a driver.let's say i have installed the system like 5 times in the past 12 hours.

Feb 12, 20101. Make a disk image of my 9.10 system (formatted ext3, btw) on my Syology CS407 NAS so I can do a bare metal restore. Why is this a couple of clicks on my Mac and Windows boxes, but so far not easy on Jaunty? Did I miss something?
2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?
3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?
4. Is there one flavor of linux distro that has a really consistent standard for user interface? I like to be able move things around, but do like my menus to be consistent (and do I ever hate the MS ribbon!). I've really only tried Ubuntu.
Linux installs have come a long, long way from the old days, and are such a point and click operation that I just wonder what I'm doing wrong. Someone is bound to have sorted these things.

Jul 20, 2010I have been administering linux systems for years now, but usually they are commodity boxes and as a result I rarely have driver problems, short of needing to install some "restricted" or "proprietary" driver package, or manually installing the nvidia binary drivers back in the day. However, one question to which I have never picked up a straight answer regards common troubleshooting practice. Will lsusb and lspci list device for which a system has no drivers (kernel modules)? I am trying to install a webcam on a SiS-chipset laptop and though I can see a physical webcam, neither lsusb or lspci are showing me that any webcam-like device exists. What I want to know is if it would show anything, or if it needs drivers in order to show a device?

Apr 8, 2010I have been using ubuntu for quite a long time, and for the first time, I am now unable to set nvidia drivers to work. I have just install ubuntu 9.10 amd64 on an AMD 64 athlong X2 with a GEForce 6500 nvidia card.
The only reason I need the proprietary drivers is to use two monitors.
I am going crazy, I have tested everything I have found on the web. I have tried all the nvidia drivers version, I have tried envyng, ... but nvidia do not work!!
I am trying Xinerama with nv, but it does not work either!!!
Here is my xorg.conf file in which I have tried to use nv driver to set dual monitor. X fails to load and it says that screen 0 is deleted, that devices are found but there are no matches in the config file. Any clue?

After a couple of reboots, I changed from the proprietary drivers, to the regular nVidia drivers. After doing this, the startup logo is displayed at a really low resolution. Is there a simple fix to change this and use the nVidia drivers as well?

Oct 24, 2009I just installed Karmic beta and I'm having issues with getting my wireless driver to work. When I was using 9.04 and when I booted 9.10 from a CD, I could just go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and activate a wireless driver and everything would be just peachy. The problem is that, in the install of 9.10 beta, no drivers appear when I load the Hardware Drivers GUI, so I can't get wireless internet.
Is there anything I can do besides wait a few days for the full release of 9.10 and hope that solves the issue?

May 9, 2011after few years being limited with my pc configuration (windows OS) I realized that linux or it's distributions is the best invention in 21 century. And finally I am starting use it. openSUSE 11.4 installaition succesful, I updated it and it looks I don;t have any problems, but I got few questions.
1. How install older version of mozilla firefox internet browser here? I can't install some plugins because it's a firefox beta 12 version, for example. I am quake fan, o I like play quake live, but i can't install quake plugin, because my firefox is beta version.
2. Does I got all drivers instantly installed to my mashine? ATI video drivers, sound drivers ect??
3. Are there any How-To guides which can teach me, how I can improve my desktop? gadgets, 3D desktop ect...?
