Ubuntu Installation :: Netbook 10.04 On Kohjinsha SX3 - Get A Grand List Of 0 Drivers On System

Aug 10, 2010

I have tried several times to get Ubuntu to work on my SX3, and I gave it a serious attempt today to see if I could get things working, I'm getting a new hard drive so this is Ubuntu's last chance - for a while at least.

I've gotten past all the minor inconveniences and has it set up like I want it, but my problem is drivers. If I go to System - Drivers I get a grand list of 0 drivers on my system. Things like the touchpad, bluetooth and WLAN are working, but any function keys, brightness control keys etc are useless. In addition it either doesn't have, or is running on really bad drivers for my screen and graphic card. My screen comes up as "unknown" - though it's usable. Scrolling is not a matter of scrolling, but "jumping", and the computer is generally kinda sluggish (which is odd since it's running quite fine on Windows 7) and attempting to play any video file, on any media player - or even ..... - gives you a fps of about 0.1. (sound's working perfectly though)

I noticed some thread about laptops that are incompatible with Ubuntu somewhere, Is there anything that can be done about this or should I just give up and go back to Windows 7? Kohjinsha has drivers for XP, Vista, and 7, as a side-note, if it matters.

General :: Lsusb / Lspci List Devices For Which System Has No Drivers?

Jul 20, 2010

I have been administering linux systems for years now, but usually they are commodity boxes and as a result I rarely have driver problems, short of needing to install some "restricted" or "proprietary" driver package, or manually installing the nvidia binary drivers back in the day. However, one question to which I have never picked up a straight answer regards common troubleshooting practice. Will lsusb and lspci list device for which a system has no drivers (kernel modules)? I am trying to install a webcam on a SiS-chipset laptop and though I can see a physical webcam, neither lsusb or lspci are showing me that any webcam-like device exists. What I want to know is if it would show anything, or if it needs drivers in order to show a device?

Ubuntu Installation :: New ASUS Eee PC 1215T Netbook Has No Operating System?

Feb 22, 2011

i ordered an AsuS Eee PC 1215T netbook off of Newegg:[URL].. i was confused and surprised to discover it didn't have an operating system, only the Express Gate Cloud. it was advertised as running on windows 7, but it's not installed. i called the ASUS tech support not once, but TWICE and they didn't know diddly squat. would anyone be able to walk me through how to install linux on it? the express cloud is a very basis system. there isn't a "my computer" function so i don't know how i would go about installing anything on it. from what i understand this little netbook has great potential, i just don't know how to harness it.

Ubuntu :: Building New 10.04 Box (2-3 Grand)?

Jun 27, 2010

I am returning to Ubuntu as my primary OS. For this, I am building a new system (I have a beast of a Windows desktop, but retiring that as an HTPC and building a new desktop). Will be moving some items from the Windows desktop like the speakers, keyboard/mouse, monitors, etc, that will not serve with the HTPC configuration. Basically, this is what I am building (amost identical to my current Windows machine, except it's a Core2Quad and has 12GB of RAM):

i7-860
P55 chipset motherboard
8GB of RAM
system/boot volume volume 2x64GB 2nd gen 64GB SSDs in RAID0 (have hardware garbage collection so will run find in RAID)

[code]....

Video Card: with 10.04, should I go with ATI or nVidia for a card? Am running triple monitors, and will be gaming using Cross-Games and Cedega. Which drivers between the two manufacturers is performing the best and would be best for gaming/multiple monitors.

RAID Card: The 2320 says it has native support in the 2.6.25 kernel. I get good speeds (500-600 MB/sec on both the SSDs and the RAID5) and no troubles with it on the Win Desktop. Should I have any issues with it under 10.04 or would there be a suggestion in the <$350 price range to replace it with? Or, would running the ICH10R off the motherboard work with the alternate CD?

SSD Setup: What partitions would be best to keep off the SSD volume and on the RAID5? I know /tmp, /home, /var, and /swap should be kept off the SSDs to reduce the excessive writes. Any other suggestions? With a 128GB system/boot volume, what would you do for partition sizes there?

Sound Card: Is the Omega supported under 10.04? Or another suggestion for good 7.1 surround sound?

Ubuntu Installation :: Netbook Crashed / Windows XP System Files Corrupted?

Sep 1, 2011

My HP Netbook crashed. The Windows XP system files corrupted and Windows absolutely will not run. I planned on using Ubuntu to recover it, and then install Ubuntu permanently to save it in the future. Before you ask, every other utility has failed on me. UBCD included, which did nothing but provide me with errors upon errors just trying to run it.

The netbook has no CD drive. The only internet around is a wireless signal... my netbook has a broadcom wireless card that is never recognized. I'm using someone elses working laptop to connect online and get things I need, make boot devices, research for help, etc. This laptop has barely any hard drive space. Currently it has 1 gb remaining for doing anything.I have three flash memory devices:2 gb SD card. My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.2 gb flash stick (that's actually an mp3 player). My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.512 mb flash stick. This DOES work as a boot device.

So far my 512 mb flash stick has run Damn Small Linux and Ubuntu Minimal on my netbook. Of course, both are useless because the netbook cannot access internet, nor does either OS recognize my wireless card. This flash stick is, obviously, too small for a regular Ubuntu installation or any other Linux distribution that can help (as far as I know).

So, in order for this to work, I have to be able to do one of the following:

Install Ubuntu from a different OS, like Damn Small Linux or something small enough to boot on my 512 mb stick. Ubuntu can be put on one of the other, larger devices, maybe to be accessed for installation. No idea how to do this, let alone safely.

Install Ubuntu Minimal OFFLINE. This question was asked multiple times on these forums and none were answered. Is there a way to run minimal, and use offline sources for the install?

Get the normal Ubuntu installer under 500 mb. Its overwhelmingly frustrating that I'm just barely unable to do this. I've read of Ubuntu Customization Kit, which ended up being lots of useless files and reams of gobbldegook. I've heard Ubuntu is packed with additional, nonrequisite software which makes it so large. Why can't there be a halfway version between normal and minimal?? Not everyone has internet and not everyone has a CD drive or large USB stick! Is there a way this can be accomplished? Does this version exist?

I have limited time and resources. Before you ask, no, I cannot afford a larger USB stick. I'm pinching pennies right now and there's nowhere near here that sells them anyway.

Ubuntu Installation :: ASUS Netbook Heating Up When Using Netbook 10.04

Apr 30, 2010

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...
