I am experiencing some strange behaviour with sound, and I have been messing around with installing some ALSA drivers. I suspect that I might have corrupted some part of the installed Ubuntu packages. Is there a way to check all the packages on the system for integrity using apt-get or similar?

I checked my DNS settings, my DNS server, and everything was good to go. I even removed all files from /var/lib/clamav, including the mirrors.dat file, and still no go, got the same errors. I downgraded all the packages, and still got the same thing... Is anyone else having this problem?
I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

I have been running Ubuntu on my laptop since 9.10 by itself (not dualbooting Windows). I had no problems with it back then but I did notice that when I upgraded, not all the packages installed and I would get an error message saying so. I never thought much of it. The problem became apparent when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.4, I would get an error message everytime and the upgrade would be cancelled. This forced me to reinstall Ubuntu for both 10.04 and 10.10. As soon as I downloaded 10.10 I downloaded docky and chromium. Heres where my current problems arise:
- Docky (which worked in 10.04) wont work even after I download compiz.
- Every time I update the system, if i try to update chromium or anything else from google it cancels the upgrade.
- I tried using "sudo apt-get upgrade" in the terminal but I get
"Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened."
How can I list what i have installed for current packages, excluding what normally comes with a fresh install of 9.10?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running 9.10 and am anticipating upgrading to 10.04 when it is released next week. I am however, running several packages from PPA's that were simply not working well at the versions included with 9.10 (I know specifically the 64-bit version of Flash and Wine are setup this way).
Since these installs are out of the scope of the official Ubuntu sources, how are these handled when I upgrade? More importantly, since some of these packages were just installed as a temporary fix until 10.04 came out, for some of them I'd like to remove the PPA version and reinstall the default version (since for several of them the 10.04 version has caught up to where it needs to be). Is there any way to identify all packages installed from PPA's on the system?
I was wondering if there's a package that can report on the frequency with which a program (e.g. gnuplot) has been run over, say, the past week, or month.

Also if you want to keep a port that was installed as a dependency, you can set it to be requested manually. Does the Debian system have the same functionality? The reason is that I configured a system which fits me just right (I installed some additional packages and removed some standard packages like OpenOffice...) and was wanting to back it up - even for a newer Ubuntu-Version.
Most of the changes are already gone in /var/log/dpkg.log... so this option does not exist...Does anyone know where Synaptic stores the information which package is installed and which is not? It is possible to view those packages by applying a filter.

I would like to make a list of all the programs that were installed, so I can re-install them on the fresh install.

Since I had problems with Openoffice since the upgrade to 9.10, I've tried to uninstall all openoffice. I've searched for 'openoffice' in synaptic and uninstalled all thet I've found. It has uninstalled many other things, thunderbird, firefox and god only knows what other. Now, there is a way to know what are the packages installed by default? Or, to install all the dafault packages? Or, there is a log of what I've uninstalled?

This took an absolute age and now I realise why - it has basically installed the entire KDE environment and associated lib packages as well.I have found /var/ log/ dpkg.log shows what has been installed and of course I can wade through that to make a list of all the packages and uninstall them all via Synaptic. But that will take a long time to do.
Is there anyway to somehow automate rolling back any package changes since a certain time?I've checked the man for dpkg and I can't see any mention of anything like this.

Today, when my normal synaptic/apt-get upgrade ran, it wanted to to overwrite the (newer) version I installed with the (older) version in the repos.Is there any way to have synaptic/apt ignore packages installed via checkinstall so that they aren't overwritten?

I went through man pages and I did not find anything relevant. Also /var/log/apt/history* doesn't say what I requested and what came as a dependency.
For gentoo-aware folks, I am looking for something like "world" file.
I just installed the 32 bit version of Ubuntu 10.10 and though I like it an all, I'd like to put the 64 bit edition in in order to use all four gigs of RAM I have installed... To my knowledge, 32 bit computers should be able to handle 4GB RAM but I guess my address but is too small.
In any case, I'm developing a Ren'Py game and for both it and GIMP and a few other apps I could really use that extra gig.
Quick cut: I would like to back up the programs I've got installed so I can re-install them on the 64 bit version. Most of the things I've installed I've gotten from the Software Center, but for the things I've had to type into the terminal to install, well I haven't logged them anywhere so I'd have to dig up on Google again.
After upgrading from one version of Ubuntu to another, what happens to packages that have been installed prior to the upgrade that have higher version numbers (are newer) than the ones that are supposed to be installed via the Ubuntu upgrade?Specifically, I'm referring to compiling the latest version of FreeType to try to alleviate some dependency issues related to compiling Wine (I need a custom Wine patch), and I was wondering what would happen if I had a newer version of FreeType installed if I then later upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, and if Maverick used an older version of FreeType by default than the one already installed on my system.

Is there a way to take source files of those (installed) packages and save them some where else in order to reinstall them if i needed next time without need to INTERNET connection ???
Another question I wanna know about: How can I take a backup of my system as whole in order to get back to it if some problem happened. I used to use Acronis True Image and its alternatives to make a disk image. Is there is some thing similar in linux ?? is there better options ??
