Ubuntu :: Scrolling Down Any Page Results In Overlapping Of Text
Aug 12, 2010
Enabling visual effects to either of normal/extra result in a serious problem-scrolling down any page results in overlapping of text, which is corrected only when i minimize and maximize the window.

As i used Terminal, i noticed something odd: the text is overlapping itself. In other words space between letters is uneven and can be negative.
See screenshot if you wish.
What could cause that? Is it a Maverick bug? Or has it something local?

I cannot have any more than 47 characters on each line of my virtual terminal without everything on that line disappearing. The text is apparently still there, since commands that need more than 47 characters still work but the text stays hidden. After the text has been overlapped I can type as many characters as I like and it no longer overlaps, but my PS1 on that line and all previously overlapped text stays hidden.I'm almost certain that the problem is in my bash configuration since it happens in a terminal emulator as well as the virtual terminal.

On my RHEL6 Gnome Terminal, the text is overlapping. I tried with the "Use the system fixed width font" option or changing other fonts, but they did not change. Also, I tried creating .fonts.conf file that's posted as a solution for other but this did not help.
Thing is that the first time when I installed RHEL6, it looked ok, but 2nd installation on VirtualBox client and thereafter, this happens. I'm using the same installation source and options as the 1st time. Also, "Open Terminal" option is missing from pop-up window after 2nd installation (Terminal is still available from App->System Tools; just not from popup window).

In the web browsers I know, by pressing the space bar you scroll down one "page", lets call it. To effect the opposite motion, you can press <PageUp> or <Backspace>. But I can't believe there is not a key or key combination nearer the space bar to scroll pages up.In less, you can use the space bar and the b key, and you see how this key has strategically been chosen, as it is close to the space bar. Also, they lie near the bottom of the keyboard, a comfortable spot to place one's fingers. So, is there a pair of keys, one for page scroll up, the other for page scroll down, and such that one is next to the other and at the same time near the bottom of the keyboard in the most used web browsers or in some of its styles?

Whenever I have an open OS-generated window (Software Center, Settings etc), the text will be corrupted if the window is scrolled. This can be restored by highlighting the text - and sometimes it will self-restore given time, but the corruption will reappear if the text is scrolled again.
The behaviour does not happen in program-generated windows, such as Firefox.

It takes about 25 seconds for my Grub to load, about 10-15 seconds of a black screen with flashing cursor before the first (Grub version 1.5 etc) message, then another ten seconds or so with the message "grub loading please wait" (from memory) before the menu appears. Is that normal for a system with three HDs and three different OS (SUSE 11.2 and 11,1, Ubuntu 10.04)? Maybe it is, but it would be nice to shave off a few seconds as Grub now takes longer than booting the OS... Also, when I set the resolution in YaST2 of the Bootloader to my maximum of 1920x1200 (24bit), I get scrolling text over the bootsplash which I didn't get when the resolution was set to the previous value of 1600x1200 (8bit).

I am playing around with PyGTK and come across a problem: When I put a TextView inside a ScrolledWindow, and type text into the TextView until it reaches the edge, the cursor goes outside the viewport and I can't see what I'm typing. How to make it so that the ScrolledWindow automatically scrolls so that the caret in the TextView is always in visible?

This doesnt really bother me at all, Im more curious than anything but- When I first installed fedora 9, during startup there was a bootsplash during the boot process. When the kernal was updated, the bootsplash was replaced with scrolling text (I have done several kernal updates, it was after the first one the scrolling text happened). Is there a way of reverting back to the bootsplash or is it more trouble than what its worth?

I need some help in determining how to have a color splash image display in place of the Linux scrolling-text during the boot-up process on an embedded Linux device. The kernel used is a stripped-down version of Linux (kernel 2.6.29), which has been custom configured. I am using syslinux as the bootloader. I was told that Plymouth might be the way to go with this, but I'm not sure.

I am trying to store the results of my code to a separate text file. But the problem is, as my results comes from a loop, my text file shows only the last result, not all of them.Like if the loop runs 5 time the text file shows the result for the 5th step. But i need to store all of them (1 to 5).Can I use awk to print the output field and store to another file and creat a new line so that the next output field goes to a new line?(just an idea, dont know).
#!/bin/basth
for (( i=1; i<=5; i++))
do
./file.exe > output.txt

I have a large document in two columns to which I want to add a header on each page. The problem is that headers must contain the same text, except for things like page numbers, and I want to have different text on each page.
I thought of using a frame for the header, but it would have to be inserted manually into every page.
I tried defining a pair of sections, the second with two columns, but when I put text into the second section it just overwrote the first. Even if it didn't, I suspect that the sections would have to be created for each page.
I've got the manual (all 536 pages of it) but it doesn't address my problem (or much else, for that matter). This seems such a simple requirement.

Can anyone help me with accomplishing the following: software writes to STDOUT --> filter --> PDF or PS "tiny text" thunbnail. Where "label" means something that fits on a biz card or smaller and remains readable. Here is an example,I want a "paper label" for data DVD media, or to include in the case with a carry-around USB drive.I can make content with ls -lh and similar utils with some post processing, but the resulting text file prints too large.A biz card has a similar form factor to a letter page only much smaller, so I need a filter of some sort.Process the text into postscript(ps) or PDF "tiny text" page thumbnail.Print this thumbnail label and store it with the media.I can also use the online page thumbnails as index into an archive or catalog.
Can some TEXT--TO--PS or TEXT--TO--PDF expert help work out how to accomplish this sort of thing? What do most people do about keeping an index or catalog of offline media (CD, DVD, USB drive) contents? (I know that "don't bother" is a popular option.)

Strange line of text appeared on open gedit page on first use after upgrade from 10.04 t0 10.10. I was reading something and copypasting the odd bit onto a gedit note: left the room, returned to find blank page except for "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn". Then I saw that it was just the tail-end of a longer line which had stretched the page width to max, and by deleting backwards I arrived beneath my intact notes. The line was "I[my bolding]nnnnnnnnnn...nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnby v9898". I googled v9898. And there's a v9898. com. It provides something for Windows systems.

I can't seem to run Evolution. Whenever I try to open it, I get a box asking for the password for my email account as well as a box asking whether I want Evolution to be the default mail client. The answer in either box is not acknowledged, and the only was I can figure out to close it is to "killall evolution". I'm having a hard time searching for bug reports--nothing seems to come up with the terms that I have used.
How can I reset this? I kind of want to try out the Contacts manager feature and the MS Exchange compatibility, but I use Thunderbird for my main email and I don't want Evolution to be the default. Incidentally I'm actually using Fedora 13 but I imagine most of the commands I might need are the same.

I read many threads regarding `gparted` not showing up hard disk partitions. Also read the advice not to change partition table according to solution to given to others. So posting my partition table here...
Code:
sudo parted /dev/sda print
Error: Can't have overlapping partitions.
Code:
mint@mint ~ $ sudo fdisk -lu
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders, total 625142448 sectors
[code]...
I guess entire disk is taken as extended partition and primary partition(/dev/sda4) lying within this. So this is may be similar to thread [URL]. Correct me if I am wrong and also advice me on how to proceed further.
