OpenSUSE Install :: Get Scrolling Text Over The Bootsplas
Apr 19, 2010
It takes about 25 seconds for my Grub to load, about 10-15 seconds of a black screen with flashing cursor before the first (Grub version 1.5 etc) message, then another ten seconds or so with the message "grub loading please wait" (from memory) before the menu appears. Is that normal for a system with three HDs and three different OS (SUSE 11.2 and 11,1, Ubuntu 10.04)? Maybe it is, but it would be nice to shave off a few seconds as Grub now takes longer than booting the OS... Also, when I set the resolution in YaST2 of the Bootloader to my maximum of 1920x1200 (24bit), I get scrolling text over the bootsplash which I didn't get when the resolution was set to the previous value of 1600x1200 (8bit).

Whenever I have an open OS-generated window (Software Center, Settings etc), the text will be corrupted if the window is scrolled. This can be restored by highlighting the text - and sometimes it will self-restore given time, but the corruption will reappear if the text is scrolled again.
The behaviour does not happen in program-generated windows, such as Firefox.

I am playing around with PyGTK and come across a problem: When I put a TextView inside a ScrolledWindow, and type text into the TextView until it reaches the edge, the cursor goes outside the viewport and I can't see what I'm typing. How to make it so that the ScrolledWindow automatically scrolls so that the caret in the TextView is always in visible?

I Have installed openSUSE 11.3 using VMWare and liked it so I thought I would install as my main OS. So I downloaded the latest livecd Gnome and created a usb install using imagewriter with suse. I can boot to the initial menu asking if I want to boot the livecd or install. If I choose either it will begin to show a lot of things on the screen scrolling really fast and then the screen will go black. I've waiting up to about 15 minutes with no result.

Enabling visual effects to either of normal/extra result in a serious problem-scrolling down any page results in overlapping of text, which is corrected only when i minimize and maximize the window.

This doesnt really bother me at all, Im more curious than anything but- When I first installed fedora 9, during startup there was a bootsplash during the boot process. When the kernal was updated, the bootsplash was replaced with scrolling text (I have done several kernal updates, it was after the first one the scrolling text happened). Is there a way of reverting back to the bootsplash or is it more trouble than what its worth?

I need some help in determining how to have a color splash image display in place of the Linux scrolling-text during the boot-up process on an embedded Linux device. The kernel used is a stripped-down version of Linux (kernel 2.6.29), which has been custom configured. I am using syslinux as the bootloader. I was told that Plymouth might be the way to go with this, but I'm not sure.

I am having a problem with my touch-pad on my Dell Inspiron 1525. It needs to be adjusted for speed and it starts scrolling unexpectedly. I understand I need to install a driver for it but don't know how. The problem I see with Linux is that it's not easy to install software for new users. I have ran into a few One click Installs and managed to work them out quite easily. Usually the documentation you find online to install programs assumes the end user knows how to install.I need to know how to install the touch-pad driver from start to finish and all steps in between.

Text does not scroll properly in terminal windows or in any KDE4 application window including Yast's windows.
When I scroll up or down the text either rolls in the upper line or two in a window or the lower line or two and nothing rolls in the middle.

I tried running the live cd of opensuse 11.2, everything works ok except all the text is microscopic, I can't see any thing to change any settings, I did mange to read that it had the right screen resolution under a icon of a display, this happens with Kubuntu to, Ubuntu and PCLinux work fine.I tried changing what I thought was the resolution settings but got the old black screen and signal out of range etc, is this just the live cd that causes this. Also is there a way to reboot if things go blank or freeze when running live cd's,

I installed the newest (11.2?) KDE opensuse last night on my computer. Last night everything was fine but while I slept I guess the Linux Gremlins got to my laptop. Now when I scroll down in Firefox the motion is slow and choppy. Has this happened to anyone else? If so what can I do to fix it?

Using Firefox 3.6.10 on openSUSE 11.3 with kde desktop on T42 I am finding that I lose control of the scrolling function form time to time. The result is that if I click on the down arrow to go down from the top of a page, the window will scroll down to the bottom of page without stopping, even if I take pointer off the arrow. The reverse is also true if I am trying to go up from the bottom of a page. Great for very fast reader but not for me. Is this a problem anybody else has seen? For me it is new to 11.3 but there have been so many Firefox upgrades since I ran 11.2 I cannot determine precisely when it started

I installed OpenSUSE 11.3 in text only mode and on 1st console (tty1) I see background (wallpaper) and logo at upper left corner: I know that I can to disable this splash permanently (menu.lst) or temporarily ('echo 0 > /proc/splash'). How I can:
1. Change the background (/etc/bootsplash/themes - is this here?).
2. Change the logo on my picture

I didnt quite understand the guide on S2RAM. For example, when doing this:
Code:
linux-a7dy:/home/gabriel # s2ram -f -a3
switching from vt7 to vt1... succeeded
fbcon fb0 state 1
s2ram_do: No such device
fbcon fb0 state 0
switching back to vt7... succeeded
Does that mean it worked? I ran it both from the minimun enviroment and from KDE and got the same things on text, but no actual suspend of the system!

as the title says my CPU goes on C0 state (100%) on every scroll and then returns down after a couple of seconds.
Is it normal?
I've checked this with powertop (and with my ears because I hear the fan noise...)

This is a problem I had in Ubuntu some years ago that just seemed to go away; sporadically I will want to select a website by positioning the cursor over the drop-down arrow to the right side of the url box- after the list is displayed it will vanish immediately when I attempt to position the cursor over it to make a selection. Minimizing then maximizing Firefox resolves it.
A minor problem yes - but it would be nice to not have to deal with it.

I use an MS mouse/keyboard combo model 6000 (ver. 2) and for the most part they work great, that is except for a problem with the mouse wheel scrolling through the desktops if the cursor is on a desktop. If the cursor is in/on a window it scrolls through the window as normal.t also scrolls through the desktops if I "side click" the mouse wheel as well. I've run sax2 and the mouse moduledoesn't even appear but my Wacom tablet settings do. Very perplexing to say the least.

since some days I have a strange problem with KMail (1.13.5) in KDE4.5.5. When I try to copy some text from an email and past it to any other program (e.g. Openoffice), not only the marked text will be pasted, but a kind of HTML code including the text.
This bug is not OpenSuse specific. I found the same bug in a Fedora mailing list (of course, whithout an answer): Strange Copy/Paste behavior in KMail 1.13.5/Kontact 4.4.8
