OpenSUSE Install :: Get Scrolling Text Over The Bootsplas

Apr 19, 2010

It takes about 25 seconds for my Grub to load, about 10-15 seconds of a black screen with flashing cursor before the first (Grub version 1.5 etc) message, then another ten seconds or so with the message "grub loading please wait" (from memory) before the menu appears. Is that normal for a system with three HDs and three different OS (SUSE 11.2 and 11,1, Ubuntu 10.04)? Maybe it is, but it would be nice to shave off a few seconds as Grub now takes longer than booting the OS... Also, when I set the resolution in YaST2 of the Bootloader to my maximum of 1920x1200 (24bit), I get scrolling text over the bootsplash which I didn't get when the resolution was set to the previous value of 1600x1200 (8bit).

OpenSUSE :: Initial Keypresses Lost After A Pause Or When Starting To Type Into A Text Field?

Sep 12, 2010

I have just done a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.3 I am using KDE4.When I move my mouse and click on a text field, I start typing and the first few keypresses are ignored. Or if I stop typing and pause for a bit without moving the mouse or doing anything, then when I press the next key it is ignored again. If I go to System settings -> accessibility, neither slow keys, bounce keys or sticky keys are ticked. The effect of this is that if I momentarily pause for thought in the middle of writing then sometimes half a word can go missing. Unfortunately this makes the desktop extremely difficult to use as I am always having to check that all my key presses have been accepted.

Ubuntu :: Slow/Erratic Scrolling In Chromium?

Apr 23, 2010

I just upgraded from 8.04 to the lucid beta (yes I was slow to move on that), and chromium's scrolling is HORRID! It jumps and skips both when I use the mouse wheel or when I drag the scroll bar.

Any ideas? Firefox scrolls just fine. It makes using chromium very unpleasant because any time I have to scroll I feel like I'm back in 1992.

I did some searching and found lots of complaints, so I thought I was close to an answer until I looked at the date, it was late 2008/early 2009 when this was an issue.

Ubuntu :: Why Is The Text Field For The Path Not In Nautilus Anymore

Feb 26, 2011

Why do you have to press ctrl-L to use the location text box in Nautilus? There used to be a setting in preferences where you could have it always use the text bar. Now you have to use some gconf command in the terminal. The gconf command I've used also will only work for normal users. If I want to open a root nautilus terminal to move files around between my mounted drives then I have to hit ctrl-l every time. It is really annoying because if I am in a Nautilus window there are lots of times where I need to copy the path to something I am doing in the terminal.

Why does it seem like everything involved with Ubuntu is simplifying things at the expense of having options? I thought GNU/Linux was all about options. I guess it still is, but I just cannot understand why you would completely remove options instead of just putting them in an advanced section or something.

Ubuntu :: Text Corruption When Scrolling - Natty 64-bit

Jul 8, 2011

Whenever I have an open OS-generated window (Software Center, Settings etc), the text will be corrupted if the window is scrolled. This can be restored by highlighting the text - and sometimes it will self-restore given time, but the corruption will reappear if the text is scrolled again.

The behaviour does not happen in program-generated windows, such as Firefox.

Fedora :: Scrolling Text During Boot Process Instead Of 'loading Bar'?

This doesnt really bother me at all, Im more curious than anything but- When I first installed fedora 9, during startup there was a bootsplash during the boot process. When the kernal was updated, the bootsplash was replaced with scrolling text (I have done several kernal updates, it was after the first one the scrolling text happened). Is there a way of reverting back to the bootsplash or is it more trouble than what its worth?

General :: Field-terminating Char Appears Within Field Values?

May 18, 2010

I've had a very colorful morning learning the innerparts of Linux's sort command, and have come across yet another issue that I can't seem to find an answer for in the documentation. I'm currently using -t, to indicate that my fields are split by the comma character, but I'm finding that in some of my files, the comma is used (between double-quotes) within values:

Jonathan Sampson,,foo@bar.com,0987654321
"Foobar CEO,","CEO,",ceo@foobar.com,,

How can I use a comma to terminate my fields, but ignore the occurences of it within values? Is this fairly simple, or do I need to re-export all of my data using a more-foreign field-terminator? (Unfortunately, I do not have any control over declaring a different terminator with this particular project).

Ubuntu :: Chromium Application Shortcuts In Unity - Not Including Most Of Chromium's Toolbars

May 2, 2011

I often use the option in Chromium to create 'application shortcuts'. These are instances of Chromium that make a website look more like an app by not including most of Chromium's toolbars. I use it for gmail and google docs and spreadsheets and calendar. In 11.04 I have set up Desktop launchers and copied them across to the Launcher (what an odd way to add something to the launcher, why no right-click 'add launcher' option?)

The problem is that the launcher thinks all these apps are chromium (which they are really, but I would like them to be seen as separate apps). If I minimize my gmail window, a little triangle appears next to the chromium icon, not the gmail icon. To get the window back, I have to click on the Chromium icon. Clicking on the gmail icon launches a new instance of it (also tied to the Chromium icon).

The result is that if I click on the down arrow to go down from the top of a page, the window will scroll down to the bottom of page without stopping, even if I take pointer off the arrow. The reverse is also true if I am trying to go up from the bottom of a page. Great for very fast reader but not for me. Is this a problem anybody else has seen? For me it is new to 11.3 but there have been so many Firefox upgrades since I ran 11.2 I cannot determine precisely when it started
