Programming :: Bash : Searching For Info And Changing The Color Of Keywords In The Results?

May 5, 2011

(bare with me as I am sort of new with scripting) I am trying to figure out how to run a script that does a basic chkconfig and to get only those services that are running, but changing the color of "on" to red in my output file. Here is what I am working with so far:

Quote:

#/bin/bash
RED=$(tput setaf 1)
BLK=$(tput setaf 0)

[code]....

*I had to substitute a "-" and <colon_symbol> for ":" in front of the on's, because the forum thought they were smiley faces (i.e. n) how to make the "on" to be red while the rest of everything remains in black text. I have been trying to read up on sed and awk, but it is still pretty much a mystery to me right now. There will be other things in the output file that I wouldn't want a rogue "on" to be in red, so just the instances of "on" in that one chkconfig return.

OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.6 Konqueror Embedded Text Editor (only Viewer Now)?

Mar 2, 2011

i recently updated a machine from 4.5 to 4.6 Factory and the Embedded Text Editor function for editing text files inside Konqueror seems to be broken (viewing file is fine, but no editing). Doing research i found that it had been reported, but ignored as an "opensuse problem": Bug 259338 - I cannot edit text files when I preview them in konqueror by using "Embedded Advanced Text Editor" which is not a case in 4.5 seems like i remember that it was a kate plugin or katepart functionality, but others would know more.it was apparently reported in the RC days and disregarded, perhaps someone has more info about it?it doesn't seem to be a config file problem since a new user is in the same boat.for me it is oft-used and would be sorely missed.

Ubuntu :: Me Menu Text Box Does Not Auto-Clear

I've been meaning to ask about this since Ubuntu 10.10 launched. How come clicking the "Post message..." text box in the Me Menu doesn't auto-clear the text? You have to highlight the text, press Backspace and then post your message. Not very nice or intuitive. No biggie, just surprised it wasn't patched by someone within a day or two of launch as these things often are!

General :: Searching A Specific Directory For Files Containing A Text String?

I am a member of a group which has written a program whose source code is being held in a specific directory (~cs252/Assignments/basicAsst/project) and we want to go through and change the parameters for the function "sequentialInsert." My job is to find all occurances of the function call to "sequentialInsert" and to also list the files from where the code came from. Also, I have to be in the commandsAsst directory when I do this. I have tried grep and find combined together, and I am at a lost.

Programming :: Sed Script - Searching For Text Within File / Replace With Variable

Feb 25, 2011

Code:
#!/bin/bash
VARR=`cat /proc/asound/cards | grep HDMI | cut -c 1-2`
VARX="defaults.ctl.card $VARR"
VARY="defaults.pcm.card $VARR"
FILE1="alsa"
FILE2="alsa.new"
echo $VARX
echo $VARY
sed "s/defaults.ctl.card*/'$VARX'/g" $FILE1 > $FILE2

This is what I have right now. Well, I thought I knew sed, and apparently I don't... I tried writing this for someone else, and this has given me trouble, so since the user pretty much figured it out on his own, here it goes.
Say VARR=1, so VARX and VARY contain the above text, appended by 1.
What I am trying to do is replace the text "defaults.ctl.card 0" by VARX and "defaults.pcm.card 0" by VARY. The contents of FILE1 is the file being used to search for both text fields, and FILE2 is the output file. I tried using single quotes, double quotes, and a mixture of both, and no go whatsoever. So my question... What is the proper way of searching for text within a file and replacing with a variable?

General :: SSH And Stop Password Being Shown In Clear Text?

Jan 6, 2011

I have a headless server running Centos and I often login in remotely to administer it. I have passwordless login and sometimes run commands remotely via ssh from a client machine. I've tried to shut the server remotely but have come across a small problem. Here is the output of the command I use to shutdown :Code:unclec@linux-desktop $ ssh centos 'sudo /sbin/shutdown -h now 'PASSWORD : 123ABCAs passwordless login is set up I do not need to enter a password to ssh BUT as I am running sudo on the server I am asked to enter my centos unclec password and this is shown in clear text on my local machine terminal. Is there a way to prevent this or should I edit the sudoers file on centos so it does not ask me to enter the password when "sudoing" ?

Ubuntu Security :: Disable Tunneled Clear Text Passwords

Nov 13, 2010

The ubuntu installation came with my ubuntu (it does not matter which version etc.) Contains sshd_config file with this interesting lines:
# Change to no to disable tunneled clear text passwords
#PasswordAuthentication yes

The same lines are seen in many Ubuntu-related internet pages. This is quite surprising to see.
This seem to contradict to the fact that ssh was created specially to provide authentication (with passwords, of couse) but without sending them by internet as clear text like previous programs did. But I could not find any clear confirmations of that neither in Kubuntu-related documents no anywhere else. I put below fragment of a document from RedHat. This seem to imply that if one will use two "yes", the passwords will be passed in encripted form (and this is what is recommended by RedHat). Is that true? Is this true for Ubuntu too? Is the quoted line from sshd_config wrong? Or incomplete?

[URL] RSAAuthentication yes
The option RSAAuthentication specifies whether to try RSA authentication. This option must be set to yes for better security in your sessions. RSA use public and private key pairs created with the ssh-keygen1utility for authentication purposes.
PasswordAuthentication yes
The option PasswordAuthentication specifies whether we should use password-based authentication. For strong security, this option must always be set to yes.

Ubuntu :: Searching WITHIN Doc - Xls - Ppt Files - Grep Is Unable To Locate Text INSIDE File Types

I am on Ubuntu 11.04 and using Libre Office 3.3.2 to compose new documents and am saving them using .doc, .ppt and .xls files. (due to having to share them with others who are on Windows systems)

I have a lot of doc files and I need to search for text INSIDE these files. I am perplexed with the fact that no search tool is able to search for text INSIDE these file types. "cat" can display them of course, but grep is not able to locate text INSIDE these file types. I even tried to save a .doc file as an .odt file, but no luck. The Applications>Accessories>Search for Files does not search INSIDE doc, xls or ppt with the option "Contains the text".

#clear user history ~/.bash_history
echo "" > ~/.bash_history
#clear root history /root/.bash_history
echo "" > /root/.bash_history
