Toshiba Tecra. I'd like to upgrade from 9.01 to 11.04 but soon as I select 'Install Ubuntu' on the DVD I just get a screen of scrolling text files rolling by continuously. (I tried installing Kubuntu and Xubuntu and get the same thing)
View 3 RepliesThis doesnt really bother me at all, Im more curious than anything but- When I first installed fedora 9, during startup there was a bootsplash during the boot process. When the kernal was updated, the bootsplash was replaced with scrolling text (I have done several kernal updates, it was after the first one the scrolling text happened). Is there a way of reverting back to the bootsplash or is it more trouble than what its worth?

The kernel used is a stripped-down version of Linux (kernel 2.6.29), which has been custom configured. I am using syslinux as the bootloader. I was told that Plymouth might be the way to go with this, but I'm not sure.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhenever I have an open OS-generated window (Software Center, Settings etc), the text will be corrupted if the window is scrolled. This can be restored by highlighting the text - and sometimes it will self-restore given time, but the corruption will reappear if the text is scrolled again.
The behaviour does not happen in program-generated windows, such as Firefox.

Enabling visual effects to either of normal/extra result in a serious problem-scrolling down any page results in overlapping of text, which is corrected only when i minimize and maximize the window.

When i go to reply to an email in gmail there is something weird when i try to scroll. The scrollbar will move like i am scrolling but nothing actually in the text area moves
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt takes about 25 seconds for my Grub to load, about 10-15 seconds of a black screen with flashing cursor before the first (Grub version 1.5 etc) message, then another ten seconds or so with the message "grub loading please wait" (from memory) before the menu appears. Is that normal for a system with three HDs and three different OS (SUSE 11.2 and 11,1, Ubuntu 10.04)? Maybe it is, but it would be nice to shave off a few seconds as Grub now takes longer than booting the OS... Also, when I set the resolution in YaST2 of the Bootloader to my maximum of 1920x1200 (24bit), I get scrolling text over the bootsplash which I didn't get when the resolution was set to the previous value of 1600x1200 (8bit).

How to make it so that the ScrolledWindow automatically scrolls so that the caret in the TextView is always in visible?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.
Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.
I've just recently put Ubuntu on my 2010 Macbook Pro 13 inch, and all seems to be running more or less alright.One thing i miss from OS X is the ability to reverse the scrolling direction, also inertial scrolling.Is there any way to implement this in Ubuntu?Also, i have already installed the Mactel trackpad drivers.
View 2 Replies View Relatedjust upgraded to Lucid. When booting, I get a blinking cursor on a black screen for 30 sec. Then I get some flashes of text about UDEV. Finally, I get a desktop after about 30 more sec.
Any way to speed this up? I've already tried disabling my nonexistent floppy drive in the bios, but it didn't help.
Strange line of text appeared on open gedit page on first use after upgrade from 10.04 t0 10.10. I was reading something and copypasting the odd bit onto a gedit note: left the room, returned to find blank page except for "nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn". Then I saw that it was just the tail-end of a longer line which had stretched the page width to max, and by deleting backwards I arrived beneath my intact notes. The line was "I[my bolding]nnnnnnnnnn...nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnby v9898". I googled v9898. And there's a v9898. com. It provides something for Windows systems.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIm trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've just installed a driver for ATI HD 4850, and I have a huge delay while scrolling, or when entering a folder which contains more files.(While scrolling down/up, vertical lines go down or up slowly, refreshing the image, 1 line/time if I noticed well.. takes like 2-3 secs to 'clear' the image..) I'm a total beginner at ubuntu, so please reply in standard language, or explain what to do I don't know if I installed the ATI driver properly, I just found that guide on the net..

I burned and checked the image, but cannot install or upgrade ( I DL both the full and alternate image) Hangs on the Ubuntu screen with the scrolling dots. After this, I tried mounting and running the install from the iso, but since all the files are either .inf or unknown, I don't know how. Next, I tried a trick from the ubuntu site using alt+F2 to run from the iso, and it seemed to work, but now it still tries to DL the updates from the internet instead of just getting them from the ISO. This also happens now if I try to upgrade from the update manager, it keeps asking for the install disk. Is there any way to just use the ISO as though it were a disk? I have been running 9.10 for months with no problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was happy with my Jaunty on my Asus X53 with ati radeon hd2600 and restricted driver, until two hours ago. I've started (after a long wait) to upgrade my Jaunty, everything was fine after upgrade, but I've noticed video was running with "ubuntu driver" and 3d wasn't available, so I started to install a fresh release of ati driver. But before I've saw in /usr/share/ati the previous copy of my restricted driver so before install the fresh copy I've run "sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh" it had remove all telling me there wasn't any istance of fglrx (of course I thought...) ...and so before start with new installation I've thought about a reboot for first, but after it I'm unable to boot...
from normal boot it simply hang after a while, I think when it try to initialize video card. but more worse, also after choice recovery option at grub loader it hang after a bit, without give me any prompt.
I made a mistake while upgrading the GRUB options - when choosing "install the maintainer's version vs. keep the local version"...in the drop down menu, I chose the local version option. On reboot, GRUB works, but I can't boot into 10.04. My old entries (kernels) are still there, but when I choose them, there's an error that says something like "disk not found". However, I am able to boot into Vista.
So do I solve this problem by fixing GRUB? If so, how? I have a Live CD of 9.10, would that be necessary to use it to solve this problem?

After going through the upgrade (alternate cd) I now can't boot into XP, even though it's in the GRUB2 menu.
I have fixed up the boot sector as described at this site Attached are my results from the boot info script
SDA1 is XP
SDA3 is 10.04
sda3 has this strange error: Quote: Grub 2 is installed in the boot sector of sda3 and looks at sector 66800445 of the same hard drive for core.img, but core.img can not be found at this location.
I dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows XP. After an upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 online, I can boot XP, but not U10.4 It looks to me that U10.4 does not find the MBR. Fortunately I can boot into XP.

The initial workaround from [uRL] works for me and I can get booted, but the attempt to permanently edit that into the kernel boot parameters dos not work, and restart just returns to the original problem. How can I edit the kernel boot parameters or what am I doing wrong? I enter the commands as given. I assume the vertical line and line break mean I hit enter in the terminal then.

After upgrade, i restarted ubuntu and chose ubuntu from the OS list. Right after that, my laptop restarted. No error showed. I have tried several times, same thing happened everytime.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu like 3 days ago with a cd I got when I bought a magazine about Ubuntu. That cd contained Ubuntu 9.10. After a couple of hours I desided to instal 9.10. After using 9.10 for 1 day and installing some programs like java and flash player, I checked for updates and desided to update to 10.04. The installation seemed to go all smooth, but after I clicked on the 'reboot now' button, my laptop couldn't boot no more. A little purple screen with "Ubuntu" written on it popped up for like 5 seconds and then it dissapeared, and there I had a nice black screen. I waited 4 hours, but still nothing. Yesterday I installed 9.10 again, and now I still want to update to 10.04 or 10.10. But I can't seem to use a Usb flash drive with my Toshiba laptop, and I only have 1 cd left. My rabbit kinda destroyed the 10.04 cd and now I only have 1 cd left. Shall I burn 10.10 on a cd and check if that one will work properly, or is my laptop just to old and slow ( Centrino 1.6ghz, 512mb ram ) to run one of those versions? I'm really new to ubuntu and my English sucks as well, because I come from Holland.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI initially installed 10.04 using the Ubuntu Windows Installer and everything was running fine. When I would boot up the computer it would first hit the Windows Boot Loader and give me the option of booting Windows 7 or Ubuntu. When I chose Ubuntu GRUB (I believe) would then load asking if I wanted to load Ubuntu or Windows 7. This was fine as it would work and that's all I cared about. Now after running the 10.10 upgrade from within Ubuntu (not from a CD) when I select Ubuntu from the Windows Boot Loader it acts as though Ubuntu is going to load, the screen goes black and then the computer reboots itself. I would prefer to fix the problem, if possible, instead of doing a fresh install.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 (32bit) to Ubuntu 10.10 (32bit) desktop edition using Update Manger. After installation, the system restarted and it boots straight into a grub> command line. I cannot but into Ubuntu.
I am currently dual booting with Windows XP. I also fired up a LiveCD session and opened up GParted, but it does not list my Ubuntu partition. It only lists the Windows partition.
Desire to try ubuntu at work but also not to break my work machine so i opted for the windows installer desktop edition.
10.04 64bit AMD version installed, after getting flash installed everything was great, very impressed.
Something telling me there was a newer version, so i went to the updater, ran it, it found 10.10, i proceeded, got to the clean up step, said something about x# of files not needed, clicked remove, ask me to reboot. I reboot and it gets to the OS choices screen, i choose ubuntu and i see no messages, it just flicks me back to the bios.
I can't seem to find this problem documented anywhere. Is it best to just re-install or can it be fixed?
Secondly, is the windows installer version decent enough? Are there many disadvantages? I'm just a bit wary of trying the conventional method in case i mess up the partitions/MBR or windows which would be disastrous on my work machine.
I just upgraded to 11.04. When booting, I can only start through "Linux older versions". Otherwise, with the first booting option, I only get "Ubuntu" on a fixed screen. Windows 7 also works fine. What can I do?
