Ubuntu :: Will Not Load GUI -- Screen Flashes At Splash Screen
May 21, 2010Out of nowhere Ubuntu (intrepid, I believe) has stopped loading for me. When it attempts to load gdm the screen starts flashing at the splash screen and then eventually dumps me to the terminal. From there I can login without any problems but can not get the GUI to load.
When I run sudo gdm-binary it does the flashing splash screen again and then spits out the error message: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found. Then a few warnings about longest graphic displayed 2.5xxx seconds
I tried running sudo dpkg-recondifigure gdm and relaunch gdm as above and it did the same thing.
I was not able to successfully connect to my wireless network through the terminal to try to update in the hopes of that fixing the problem. Perhaps someone can give me instructions on how? (I have tried but can not figure out how to initialize wlan0).
Or, is there something I can do from my installation CD?

The screen flashes on bootup and makes it very hard if not impossible to login and the gnome menu at the top is gone too. I do not know what he did to it. But I am loading meego on it now.

Aug 29, 2010When I load Ubuntu, it goes to the desktop screen, shows my desktop picture, loads Pidgin which I have set to start on startup, loads Icons, and then the screen goes black. The mouse cursor shows up, I can move it around, and then it goes black again, and the mouse cursor shows up again. This repeats a few times until the cursor freezes. This started happening after I tried fixing a bug with new drivers for my Intel 845gl video card. The instructions I followed are these:

I have tried some of the options in recovery mode from GRUB menu, none really work, except booting with default graphic configuration, or something similar like this.

May 14, 2010Ubuntu 9.04 works fine, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx without problems, it runs fine but after a while the screen starts flashing and the only way out is to reboot with ctrl-alt-del. First of all I get a pale purple screen with blocks of random colour in the middle then it goes on to flashing between two screens. In one the top half of the screen is vertical black and white stripes and the bottom half is black, in the other it is a terminal screen with this distributed across it:

Pulse Audio configured for per-user-sessions
Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt support
Checking battery state
On the latest occasion the text was "could not write bytes: Broken pipe" repeated all over the screen, followed by "checking battery state".

May 2, 2009I have just finished updating my older box from 8.10 to 9.04 and installing a bunch of programs. I had shut it down several times between sessions but when I unplugged it and moved it, it fails. It goes fine through the BIOS and GRUB (I think) but then when there is a screen of text it flashes to black several times and then displays a screen that looks like static with "Ubuntu" barely visible in several places.

Sep 29, 2009I upgraded from fedora 6 to fc10 using a net-inst iso. Everything went great however when I rebooted gnome wouldn't start up and there were other error messages, however thats not my current question. I figured id login as root, I put my pw in and the screen briefly flashes and then back to login prompt. The flash is a message saying something about no shell. Same occurs when trying to logon to my main user account. I can boot to single user and see that all my partitions are there and the data is there. My password file has the shell at the end of the entries.

Aug 2, 2010I'm experiencing a sudden black flash before video play back with VLC. The whole 3 screens just flash black and come back, and then the video plays fine in VLC. This doesn't happen with other media players, such as mPlayer and Totem.
I'm running an XFX Radeon 5450 (ATi) with the propriety 10.7 drivers. Running 3 17" (1280x1024) in "EyeFinity". I've had a look on the unofficial bug thingy for ati drivers for linux, and there is a bug back from 2008.[URL]...
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, of tips to start looking to try and solve my little issue, I've spent hours and hours looking though xorg, syslog and other logs in /var/log/ and nothing seems to stand out.

For some reason, while doing whatever I may be doing, my screen will flash off and on for about a minute, then when it stops flashing; there is no mouse pointer visible. I can still use the mouse, but it's ghost-like.

Screen flashes with bios info--no hard drive detected, then proceeds to show booting from hd, then loads grub stage 1.5 (not grub 2)and screen goes blank.
Debian Installation :: Squeeze - Machine Flashes Fonts And Screen Blips
Aug 15, 2011I have been using Debian for three or so years now. Not sure what all the difference it makes, but I'm installing Debian Squeeze on a Sony Vaio desktop computer... With an nVidia GeForce 5200 which works perfectly in other computers and on the same computer when dual booting with Windows XP. I've tried and installed several times already to no avail. When I fresh install just the standard system, no graphic desktop, no Xorg, no servers, no nothing, just the standard system, command line only. When I do the initial boot on this blessed computer, part way through the boot process my monitor shuts off and it says frequency out of range (thats a message from the monitor itself, not the computer or debian).
The same install process I've executed countless times. I thought it was a dependency issue, problem with X perhaps. I can install lenny, but not squeeze. When booting in single user mode, it seems like it craps out either during or right after it loads or does something with the "drm" - you know how during the boot script, the machine "flashes" the fonts and the screen blips... its seems to me like that's where its happening at. The monitor works just fine, I really don't think that's the problem. But it is frustrating and I have no clue where to go about finding what the issue is if I can't see whats going on.

Mar 30, 2011After tweeking some graphics settings, and replacing some hardware, ubuntu won't boot. Being left in the X session (CTRL + ALT + f7), it's what looks like a log:

^ and that's where it hangs. So I went into ctrl alt f1, and logged in with my user/pass, and did the command: startx the screen flashes, and brings me back to a failed to open devices report.

I tried re-installing GDM, but turns out that the PC isn't actually online, hence unable to install GDM after uninstallation. So I downloaded the gdm .deb, and tried to install it from a USB flash drive, but I get dependency errors. I'm at a loss here, I could really use some help, this is the PC that has all my data on it, 450 GB +, I'd love to not have to transfer that over to a new installation!

Oct 25, 2010I have been using ubuntu wel a long time now and I know my way around in linux but I recently updated my laptop from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 10.10 all went fine until I had to restart my laptop. I got a purple screen (loading screen) with 4 dots and a oldskool like font which said: Ubuntu 10.10 Right after that the screen goes purple and its like the system halts I hear no login sound etc just a purple screen. So I did a clean install from the 10.10 live cd which booted perfectly fine and the system was also useable like before. But when I installed the system and rebooted it again no problems.
But when I tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver (the recommended one) I got the same problem again the purple screen. After searching a while on the internet I only found posts which had the problem with ATI cards but my laptop is fitted with a Nvidia Geforce 9300 M card. So I tried several things like removing the xorg.conf (read it somewhere) which ofcourse did not work, and booting in graphics fail safe mode which worked. So the point is in 10.04 and 9.10 I CAN use my video card drivers but not in 10.10 is there a solution to this problem? I am talking about the 32 bit version of ubuntu and here's my system hardware profile:
Intel core 2 duo t7350 @ 2,0 ghz / 3mb l2 cache
2 GB DDR3 ram
160 gb hdd
Nvidia 9300m gs
Chipset: I dont know sorry

Dec 26, 2010Is there a known problem with the Lubuntu 10.10 image here? I have downloaded it to two different computers, then burned the images to two different blank CD's (different brands) and neither loads. Both only get as far as the Lubuntu menu, once ENTER is pressed at that point to load the LiveCD, a blank screen eventually appears with a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, that's it. They were both burned using the slowest burn speeds available.

Apr 15, 2011like any other Linux newb, I came to Ubuntu because my Windows crashed one time too many. And I chose Ubuntu because "it just works". But these past few days that hasn't been true. I'm posting this from a netbook with Ubuntu, and am having no problems whatsoever, but normally I use an Acer Aspire 5920G laptop. I'll include the specs as written on the sticker:
* Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5250 (1.5GHz etc)
* Up to 1024 MB Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS Turbocache
* 2 GB DDR2
Let me know if you need more details, and I'll add them later. Now, what happened was I clicked "hibernate" while leaving Firefox open. (I've done this hundreds of times, no problem) And when I went to turn it back on the next day there were weird graphical glitches in the loading screen, and it booted to the "tty1" prompt screen. I did a lot of googling and found quite a few posts about it, but the solutions either didn't work, or I didn't understand them. After trying several different suggestions from this forum and others, I managed to delete the graphics drivers. That enabled me to boot in low graphics mode, and naturally, I tried a whole bunch of things to make it work properly again. That only made it worse. Now it went straight from the loading screen to just blanking out and turning the display off. So, I tried new things. Over and over. The weird thing is even when I disconnected my harddrive and ran from a Live USB, the problem persisted. Could there be an issue with the graphics card itself? Anyway, after reconnecting the harddrive I tried to boot again. And it suddenly worked. Even HDMI to my bigger screen worked.

General :: Dell Studio 1535 Screen Resolution - System Won't Get Past The Loading Screen Anymore
Aug 4, 2010Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
Debian Installation :: Black Screen After Grub Loading Screen?
Feb 22, 2011another post about this. I just don't know how to handle this, as I'm pretty nsee the grub loading menu, but screen just freezes after, no way I can reboot, or open a console. In recovery mode I can log as root in console, though.I run Debian 6, 64 bits. I have an intel q6600 and a nvidia geforce 9800GX2.

Mar 1, 2011im new to Ubuntu and not look at it all in depth yet. I have a small issue. Im using a Toshiba Satellite A200 Laptop. I installed Ubuntu on it yesterday because i was fed up of windows vista. On windows Vista i use to Plug the laptop into a 50" LG plasma and watch online movies and sports. And for the audio i used a USB cable from the laptop into a Pioneer VSA-AX10Ai Amp. My issue is.I plugged the VGA cable in today to test it on Ubuntu. I went into apps/sys/display and all of a sudden the laptop screen just kept flashing on and off. the Tv was saying in the top left 32" and because of all the flashing i could not do anything so i just turned the laptop off. I have not attempted the Audio Via USB yet . I know vista and my IMAC auto picked up the AMP but not on UBUNTU can anyone help me with the Screen issue ??????

The area where I put user and pass is completely black but I have mouse control its all I see a loading mouse pointer.
When ever I try to do sudo Apt get update I get things like " w: failed to fetch [url] There's a lot of them similar to that one failed to fetch
I've also tried to do compiz thing also I had no luck doing so anyone know how to resolve?
