View 2 Replies View RelatedI know this is a long shot, BUT Is there any way to implement the Netbook Remix 10.04 GUI into Windows 7? As in basically making Windows 7 look and act like the GUI in Remix. I love the GUI, and if it's impossible, I'll just suck it up and dual boot, the 30 gb Win7/XP partition is bugging the crap out of me. Just wondering if there was something out there that made this thing possible.
And for the record, I'd switch back to full linux when my card is supported in october =P
I have a T61 with Windows 7 and Ubuntu on it and it works great. I also have a HP Mini 5102 with Windows 7 on it. I deleted the HP_RECOVERY partition and merged with my Windows partition because you can only have four partitions. I got Ubuntu Netbook Remix on a thumb drive and I installed it by telling it I want to pick between them at boot up. However, when I boot up my netbook it just goes right into Windows, no Grub. Here is what my fdisk -l looks like.
[Code]....
how I can get Grub running on this thing would be great.
On UNE, for example a Firefox Window is opened in workspace 1. I'd like to have a new Firefox window on workspace 2. But when I switch to workspace 2 and hit the Firefox Icon in the left launcher panel, it only brings me back to the running instance of Firefox on the first workspace. So what is an easy way to have a second Firefox Window on the second workspace?

View 5 Replies View RelatedCan I install the netbook remix without windows? All the instructions talk about putting it onto a flash drive and using Windows. Can I just use an external CD drive and install onto a new partition? If so, will it handle all the GRUB dual-boot stuff on installation or will I have to do something special for that?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am going to be dual booting with Windows XP on my new netbook. I know that I will be required to re-install XP before I will have to reinstall Linux.
My question is about the /boot partition option. If I was to create a /boot partition, would that prevent Windows from erasing Grub when I reinstall Windows? I have been Googling and I can't find an answer so I figure it won't work but I better ask as it would make life a whole lot easier.
I've just installed linux on my Acer Aspire One netbook, (10.10 netbook edition) I've done it as a duel boot with Windows 7 Starter as i want to use Linux, family want to use windows. But ideally i would want the pc to boot up as Windows then say if i hit a certain key on bootup it would swap it over to Linux from windows before it starts to load?

I had the previous edition of Ubuntu Desktop Edition installed on my Acer Aspire 1 and it asked me to upgrade which I then confirmed and proceeded to do. When it was done it started up with the Ubuntu Netbook edition and Samba was removed.
How do I access a windows share with a netbook edition, because there's no places menu? What programs / addons do I need to install to be able to access windows shares when using the netbook edition?? Otherwise, how can I revert back to my previous edition of Ubuntu which I was happy with?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 with Gnome and installed the netbook-remix so I could log into that as its own session when I'm just doing basic stuff.I log into the NBR session and all looks good, but when I run a program or open a window, it automatically minimizes the window. I maximize it and it just re-minimizes it. What can I do to stop this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy HP Netbook crashed. The Windows XP system files corrupted and Windows absolutely will not run. I planned on using Ubuntu to recover it, and then install Ubuntu permanently to save it in the future. Before you ask, every other utility has failed on me. UBCD included, which did nothing but provide me with errors upon errors just trying to run it.
The netbook has no CD drive. The only internet around is a wireless signal... my netbook has a broadcom wireless card that is never recognized. I'm using someone elses working laptop to connect online and get things I need, make boot devices, research for help, etc. This laptop has barely any hard drive space. Currently it has 1 gb remaining for doing anything.I have three flash memory devices:2 gb SD card. My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.2 gb flash stick (that's actually an mp3 player). My netbook refuses to recognize it as a boot device.512 mb flash stick. This DOES work as a boot device.
So far my 512 mb flash stick has run Damn Small Linux and Ubuntu Minimal on my netbook. Of course, both are useless because the netbook cannot access internet, nor does either OS recognize my wireless card. This flash stick is, obviously, too small for a regular Ubuntu installation or any other Linux distribution that can help (as far as I know).
So, in order for this to work, I have to be able to do one of the following:
Install Ubuntu from a different OS, like Damn Small Linux or something small enough to boot on my 512 mb stick. Ubuntu can be put on one of the other, larger devices, maybe to be accessed for installation. No idea how to do this, let alone safely.
Install Ubuntu Minimal OFFLINE. This question was asked multiple times on these forums and none were answered. Is there a way to run minimal, and use offline sources for the install?
Get the normal Ubuntu installer under 500 mb. Its overwhelmingly frustrating that I'm just barely unable to do this. I've read of Ubuntu Customization Kit, which ended up being lots of useless files and reams of gobbldegook. I've heard Ubuntu is packed with additional, nonrequisite software which makes it so large. Why can't there be a halfway version between normal and minimal?? Not everyone has internet and not everyone has a CD drive or large USB stick! Is there a way this can be accomplished? Does this version exist?
I have limited time and resources. Before you ask, no, I cannot afford a larger USB stick. I'm pinching pennies right now and there's nowhere near here that sells them anyway.
I'm running a triple boot, XP, Vista and Ubunta 9.10, I understand that some windows programs can be run on Linux and I need to know how. I don't just mean only Microsoft programs but third party programs as well.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 but there are files and installed programs which need to be backed up and restored. I tried using the Windows 7 backup utility to do a full backup to an external usb drive. The problem is that whenever the backup gets close to finishing, it always crashes. The system I am backing up has been compromised by viruses, which might be causing this. I already used several utilities to get rid of the viruses but some of the damage they did can not be undone. I tried doing the backup in safe mode but Windows 7 does not allow this. What other methods can I use to backup and restore important programs and files on Windows 7? Perhaps there is a way to do it from outside Windows 7, like say, using a Linux live cd? One of the main problems I see is restoring installed programs since those make use of the registry so simply copying the files probably won't work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know this may be just me being a little bias on OS's but... I quite honestly believe that "some" programs run faster on linux than on windows.
Open Office for example, It runs amazingly fast on my linux distro but runs horribly (laggy) on my Vista machine.
Firefox also appears to run faster on my linux machine than on my Vista machine.
There are several more examples but I could go on and on with this.
My point is, do programs run faster on linux than on windows? Or is it just me that is in denial?
I am not sure if comparing linux to Vista is a good comparison in terms of program speed or not...
Also it should be noted that the Vista machine "hardware" is "several" times faster than my linux machine's "hardware".
I am not trying to start a flame war or anything like that, I am just trying to make sure I haven't totally lost my mind.
I have just recently installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 32-bit onto an old Gateway Solo 5300 laptop to run as a test server. Since I want it to use all of the disk space, how do I remove the other OS and its existing programs.
