Fedora :: Programs Equivalence For Windows?
Jun 13, 2010Is there a list somewhere that shows what programs for Fedora are the equivalence for Windows? I know that OpenOffice is the equivalence for Office but what else.

View 7 RepliesI am looking for some software to install, and I am a bit inexperienced on the Fedora side.For e.g. pyrenamer (mass file renamer). It is not in the repos., but I found it listed here URL..No too clear if/where can I download it? Some general guidance is very welcome.what's the best way to know if my Debian software have a Fedora equivalence?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got a set of objects (all of the same type). I'm trying to think of a good way to divide it into equivalence classes, with equivalence of two objects defined as meaning a specified set of attributes are equal for both objects. More concretely, I've got:
- a Java class with around 50 fields
- a bunch of instances of the class
I want:
- to divide the instances into a few sets
- in each set, each instance has field 1 - field 5 equal to fields 1-5 of the other instances in the set.
The method I've come up with is to generate a hashcode for each instance based on the hashcodes of fields 1-5*, and map the hashcode to one of my sets. Ignoring problems with potential hashcode collisions (which I'm expecting to be too rare to worry about for now), does that sound reasonable? It seems simple enough, but I'm wondering if there's a simpler method I haven't thought of.
* I'll generate the hashcode using a method based on Eclipse's generic hashcode method, which looks like this:
Code:
public int hashCode() {
final int prime = 31;
int result = 1;
[code]....
I've got my Samba shares up and running. I can stream files from the server, I can create files on the server, and I can copy files from the server.
Running a Windows program (from a Windows box) directly from the Samba server, however, is turning into a nightmare. I'm getting Access is Denied errors from the Windows box, yet I can copy/create/etc from the entire directory with no problems.
Are there any special permissions I need to run EXE files from a Windows box, located on a Samba share? I've already chmod'd everything to 777, and I show full access when ls -Z is used.
can windows7 programs properly work on ext3 filesystem in windows (if i use ext2ifs)?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI want to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 but there are files and installed programs which need to be backed up and restored. I tried using the Windows 7 backup utility to do a full backup to an external usb drive. The problem is that whenever the backup gets close to finishing, it always crashes. The system I am backing up has been compromised by viruses, which might be causing this. I already used several utilities to get rid of the viruses but some of the damage they did can not be undone. I tried doing the backup in safe mode but Windows 7 does not allow this. What other methods can I use to backup and restore important programs and files on Windows 7? Perhaps there is a way to do it from outside Windows 7, like say, using a Linux live cd? One of the main problems I see is restoring installed programs since those make use of the registry so simply copying the files probably won't work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know this may be just me being a little bias on OS's but... I quite honestly believe that "some" programs run faster on linux than on windows.
Open Office for example, It runs amazingly fast on my linux distro but runs horribly (laggy) on my Vista machine.
Firefox also appears to run faster on my linux machine than on my Vista machine.
There are several more examples but I could go on and on with this.
My point is, do programs run faster on linux than on windows? Or is it just me that is in denial?
I am not sure if comparing linux to Vista is a good comparison in terms of program speed or not...
Also it should be noted that the Vista machine "hardware" is "several" times faster than my linux machine's "hardware".
I am not trying to start a flame war or anything like that, I am just trying to make sure I haven't totally lost my mind.
Long story short, been using Debian for 2+ years. Recently did a Clean install of Jessie (which worked fine). I wanted to test out Ubuntu 14.04 so I distro hopped for a couple weeks. Now I'm back on Debian Jessie (did a clean install again).
Problem is: Everything works fine, but after the computer runs for a while (like 2+ hours) any new program windows that I open are completely blacked out. Just like opening a big square black tile. They are unusable until I restart the computer, then everything works fine again for another 2+ hours.
I've never had this problem before, not even with my previous clean installation of Jessie. This time I installed it in the same way that I did the last time.
Some windows programs won't run after I have installed them with Wine. They either won't run or they make the screen go to a black painting screen (screen goes black and you can paint over it with your mouse to make the desktop reappear). I have tried changing the windows version and made no difference. I have even tried opening it in a virtual window and made no difference (Window opens then closes)

I maximize it and it just re-minimizes it. What can I do to stop this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI finally got around to installing Linux on my laptop the other day, and I'm trying to use Wine to run some windows apps. Problem is, my programs never appear. They DO start - I can see them in 'ps -e' as well as Gnome System Monitor. Yet the window never appears. It's not just one program either; first I tried running Steam from the terminal and I can tell that it successfully launches. The window just doesn't get drawn. All other windows become unfocused when it launches and I'm even able to type in my password to log in (I know this because after I hit enter the "Steam Login" entry disappears from the taskbar and the "Steam" entry appears in it's place) but no Steam related windows ever appear.
The second program I've been trying to emulate is EVE Online. Similar thing happens: The EVE splash screen DOES appear, along with it's entry in the taskbar, but when it closes, the EVE client never becomes visible - no taskbar entry this time either. Again, I can see it running in ps -e or System Monitor, and one of my CPUs cores becomes maxed out, so I know it's running. Also, I just noticed that I can right click Steam's invisible entry in the tray and bring up the context menu, but nothing more than that. I've heard of fonts being invisible/incorrect under Wine, but not the entire program! I've googled and tried running things in compatibility mode for various versions of windows, but have had no progress. What am I missing?

Absolutely nothing would start. I tried different configurations, settings, but nothing. I left it alone and rebooted and started up XP. I installed Azureus and I didn't do nothing else.I didn't even configure Azureus and left the router settings.I was able to start a download.I've used KTorrent (default) and Azureus before.
