View 2 RepliesI was wondering if torrents and torrent programs don't work as well in Linux compared to Windows.I have used them in the past but all of a sudden, nothing would work in my Kubuntu install. Absolutely nothing would start. I tried different configurations, settings, but nothing. I left it alone and rebooted and started up XP. I installed Azureus and I didn't do nothing else.I didn't even configure Azureus and left the router settings.I was able to start a download.I've used KTorrent (default) and Azureus before.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIve been running windows 7/Ubuntu dualboot for some years now and never had any problems. Some months ago I got a new Patriot Inferno ssd. Ofc the first thing I did was to installl windows 7, it had no problems, ran fast and smooth. Then when I reinstalled grub I started to get error when trying to start windows, the logo never apeared and all I got was the message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software"Status: 0x00.00F" "Info: The boot selection failed because a required device was inaccessible.". It does not matter what order I install windows and ubuntu in, or how many times Ive tried to reinstall grub. Windows 7 will not work while I have grub/windows installed. Right now Ive got them installed on separate drives, ubuntu on the ssd and windows on a partition on a 1tb hdd. Unfortunately I need to have windows for .net programing and gaming..

I created primary partition for Ubuntu. And for some reason that partition starts showing up in Windows XP as RAW. The partition should NOT be visible. In explorer. I tried with Ext4, Ext2 same thing, ext partitions should not be visible in windows.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system and am trying to be able to access all partitions in both OSs. I've tried some windows software that are supposed to be able to read linux partitions, but without luck. Essentially, my linux OS (rhel) is represented as an LVM partition (within the logical volume is ext3). In windows (7), file viewing programs see the partition as "raw". Is there any software that can read LVM in windows?

I maximize it and it just re-minimizes it. What can I do to stop this?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 but there are files and installed programs which need to be backed up and restored. I tried using the Windows 7 backup utility to do a full backup to an external usb drive. The problem is that whenever the backup gets close to finishing, it always crashes. The system I am backing up has been compromised by viruses, which might be causing this. I already used several utilities to get rid of the viruses but some of the damage they did can not be undone. I tried doing the backup in safe mode but Windows 7 does not allow this. What other methods can I use to backup and restore important programs and files on Windows 7? Perhaps there is a way to do it from outside Windows 7, like say, using a Linux live cd? One of the main problems I see is restoring installed programs since those make use of the registry so simply copying the files probably won't work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know this may be just me being a little bias on OS's but... I quite honestly believe that "some" programs run faster on linux than on windows.
Open Office for example, It runs amazingly fast on my linux distro but runs horribly (laggy) on my Vista machine.
Firefox also appears to run faster on my linux machine than on my Vista machine.
There are several more examples but I could go on and on with this.
My point is, do programs run faster on linux than on windows? Or is it just me that is in denial?
I am not sure if comparing linux to Vista is a good comparison in terms of program speed or not...
Also it should be noted that the Vista machine "hardware" is "several" times faster than my linux machine's "hardware".
I am not trying to start a flame war or anything like that, I am just trying to make sure I haven't totally lost my mind.
Long story short, been using Debian for 2+ years. Recently did a Clean install of Jessie (which worked fine). I wanted to test out Ubuntu 14.04 so I distro hopped for a couple weeks. Now I'm back on Debian Jessie (did a clean install again).
Problem is: Everything works fine, but after the computer runs for a while (like 2+ hours) any new program windows that I open are completely blacked out. Just like opening a big square black tile. They are unusable until I restart the computer, then everything works fine again for another 2+ hours.
I've never had this problem before, not even with my previous clean installation of Jessie. This time I installed it in the same way that I did the last time.
Some windows programs won't run after I have installed them with Wine. They either won't run or they make the screen go to a black painting screen (screen goes black and you can paint over it with your mouse to make the desktop reappear). I have tried changing the windows version and made no difference. I have even tried opening it in a virtual window and made no difference (Window opens then closes)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI finally got around to installing Linux on my laptop the other day, and I'm trying to use Wine to run some windows apps. Problem is, my programs never appear. They DO start - I can see them in 'ps -e' as well as Gnome System Monitor. Yet the window never appears. It's not just one program either; first I tried running Steam from the terminal and I can tell that it successfully launches. The window just doesn't get drawn. All other windows become unfocused when it launches and I'm even able to type in my password to log in (I know this because after I hit enter the "Steam Login" entry disappears from the taskbar and the "Steam" entry appears in it's place) but no Steam related windows ever appear.
The second program I've been trying to emulate is EVE Online. Similar thing happens: The EVE splash screen DOES appear, along with it's entry in the taskbar, but when it closes, the EVE client never becomes visible - no taskbar entry this time either. Again, I can see it running in ps -e or System Monitor, and one of my CPUs cores becomes maxed out, so I know it's running. Also, I just noticed that I can right click Steam's invisible entry in the tray and bring up the context menu, but nothing more than that. I've heard of fonts being invisible/incorrect under Wine, but not the entire program! I've googled and tried running things in compatibility mode for various versions of windows, but have had no progress. What am I missing?
