View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got my Samba shares up and running. I can stream files from the server, I can create files on the server, and I can copy files from the server.
Running a Windows program (from a Windows box) directly from the Samba server, however, is turning into a nightmare. I'm getting Access is Denied errors from the Windows box, yet I can copy/create/etc from the entire directory with no problems.
Are there any special permissions I need to run EXE files from a Windows box, located on a Samba share? I've already chmod'd everything to 777, and I show full access when ls -Z is used.
Running Ubuntu Server 9.10.I have a couple of programs that I would like to start at boot, they will both run forever. I have created a cron job with @reboot and that will start a program, but if I have multiple programs in there it waits for the first to finish before starting the next.

We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.
These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.
1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?
2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

We have around 50-60 people who need access to a local server primarily for secure general file storage. These employees are geographically dispersed. We currently use some(?) version of Windows Server which is maintained and updated by a IT company we keep on retainer. After doing some very basic research on Ubuntu Server, I would like to try and incorporate a pilot program utilizing the Ubuntu Server software.I was successful in installing Ubuntu Server on an unused PC that I put a clean hard drive in. I'm trying to load a HP Proliant w/ Fedora 11 and setting up as a WFS using Samba. However, I'm a bit confused on how to do it. Right now I have 2 36.4GB drives in RAID 1+0 and 4 146.8GB drives in a RAID 5 config. I wanna use the smaller drive for the OS and the bigger drive for the storage. I've managed to load the OS fine, the problem is I can't figure out how to mount the 4 146.8GB drives as a single logical volume and set Samba to use it. Right now all the RAIDs are setup using the built-in Compaq Smart Array utility (or whatever it's called) that's built into the SCSI hardware or BIOS.

We'd like to use Ubuntu on two replacement servers allowing Windows XP and Windows 7 clients to access the files. Our network is active directory based due to Exchange and homegrown .NET apps, so it is important that active directory is used to authenticate the clients. Samba doesn't need to be a pdc or bdc, but provide pass through authentication.I understand that Samba can communicate with active directory through security-ads and security-domain.
Here are my questions to see if I should proceed:1) Folder permissions:If we move all our files to the Ubuntu server how do we set folder permissions and will we see the active directory accounts when we do this?2) Skipping ubuntu accounts: I know the domain and ads allow you to skip creating ubuntu accounts, right? If not, how do you keep the passwords synchronized?3) Easiest way? Is there a very easy way to pull this off that I've missed? trying to set up a very minimal X on my 10.04 64 bit version of Ubuntu running nothing but Open SSH and acting as a firewall/router, making a PPP connection. The reason, is that I want to set up KVM/Qemu and run a virtual machine. The virtual machine will have a graphical environment and will be connected to my TV so that I can watch movies, stream TV etc. using it. So far, I have done the following:

When I try to run miwm the error message is:
(null): can't open display.
I have no DISPLAY variable set, but even when I set one myself using export DISPLAY=:0.0 it makes no difference.

there is no iptables definition, or any other firewall installed, neither on the server nor the client. i've read through alot of howtos an manuals, but was not able to find the problem.
I have samba server(Fedora 11) here,but when I want to access to it from WindowXP ,the first time you need to tap in user name and password.But the next time ,you automatically log in Samba server with the user name as the first time you used. But I have not clicked the "Remeber me " option when I logged in.I want to switch user when I want to log in samba,does anybody know what is wrong ?

I've been looking at PAM - but winbind requires each machine to be added to the AD. This becomes a pain if we create new virtual or physical servers. Is it possible to have one server authenticate directly with AD, and the other servers authenticate against this server, which defers to the one server that is registered in AD?
