View 1 RepliesI installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.

My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

I have a dual boot vista/ubuntu setup with ubuntu on my d: drive and windows on my c: drive and it happened to me last night. So after my freaking out when I received the grub rescue> error after updating somethings in my ubuntu install and restarting. Once the computer rebooted bam! error. after much freaking it only fixed itself by reinstalling the windows bootloader via the vista rescue disk I was wondering if there was a way to prevent this from happening again? will ubuntu attempt to "update" itself again?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried to do a clean install of 10.04 on the above desktop. It was previously running 9.10 fine.
I booted with a 10.04 live CD, used Gparted to delete the previous partition that 9.10 was in. Installed 10.04 and chose the option to install in the largest continuous free disc space.
The installation seemed to go fine, but when I re-start the system, GRUB loads, I select Linux, then I get a flashing cursor and the monitor goes to sleep as it shows like it is getting no signal.
When I boot Vista on the same system it works fine.
From the sound of the hard drive, I am guessing that it is not loading the Ubuntu OS, I don't think this is a video driver problem.
I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and when i try to check for updates in the update manager it says:

I am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.
I am facing a disgusting problem. While I am trying to update my system using update manager It downloaded the files and then while it starts installation it shows the following message

Duriing an up date pc requested a restart to complete. Then it rebooted so far and has stopped.I have a disc that I installed Ubuntu with and vaguely remeber the operating system could be run from the disc. Can I put the disc in and start the pc from it and still read what I had on the Hard drive?Or is everything gone and lost?Prior to the calamity the pc was running Ubuntu 9.10 and nothing else.

After selecting Ubuntu from the system's boot manager I'm dropped into a Grub command line and don't have any idea what to do next. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual boot alongside Windows vista on an HP DV6000 laptop.It's been running smoothly for months. No problems.Today, I was in Ubuntu, and the Update Manager asked me to update (ok) and then said it needed to restart. I hit the restart now button and the system started to shut down, but never fully shut down. It's in a kind of loop, trying to start up, but not going all the way, and then shuts down again.I did a hard reboot but still nothing - the same loop. I don't even see my HP startup screen, nor can I access the BIOS, much less Grub.I put in the Ubuntu startup CD and it tries to read from that at startup, but then fails and returns to the same loop.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a server that was running 10.04 and I decided to upgrade it to 10.10 as I had already done this successfully to a different server.The upgrade was about 3/4 way through when I can't exactly remember why but it had to shut down I think it may have got stuck on a simple package update anyhow when I next turn on the server the login screen if different with a purple background and a popup about a gnome power installation error comes up after I enter my user name and password the login box freezes up and a box comes up saying that a unknown process has stop working and gives me the options to 'lock screen', 'cancel' or 'log out anyway' if I press 'cancel' the box disappears and nothing happens if I press 'log out anyway' the login box the bottom bar and the pop-up disappear if I wait a little 'update manager' comes up saying I can partly update some packages after I enter my password to do this though it all closes and does not reappear all you can do is move the mouse.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu natty on grub-efi-amd64. I've just received notification of a bunch of new packages to install, I believe part of it is a kernel update. When I click on "apply" a window comes up which says "Additional changes are required to complete the task". "2 packages to remove" lists "grub-efi" and "grub-efi-amd64". It lists 5 packages to install 3 of which are linux kernel and 2 of which are the bios version of grub.
How can I update my system without having efi-grub removed?
this is a minor but annoying problem and I hope maybe just a simple fix. I have a weather monitor in my top panel. Sometimes it gets stuck and can't update. How do I restart these little panel applets or whatever they are called? I don't want to restart or even relogon for such a trivial problem, but it is annoying. Not sure about the relogon, but I know a reboot fixes it. (running AMD64 bit lucid).
View 2 Replies View Relatedyesterday I performed an automatic security update suggested by the update manager on my virtualized (with VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host) Ubuntu 10.10 installation.
The update somehow failed and left me with an unbootable system. When I try to boot, I am told that various folders, files, and what not are missing. Then the system drops into a busybox and leaves me with an (initramfs) prompt.
This happens with all kernels I get offered by GRUB, although the error messages are quite different from kernel to kernel.
Well, the short of it is this: I don't have the slightest idea on how to get back to a working system and this site is the final straw I'm willing to grab. A complete disaster like this following an update initiated and executed by the system is unheard of in Windows-land; at least I haven't heard of it, yet, and therefore I am going to abandon Ubuntu and Linux altogeteher, if there is no remedy.

View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday did a fresh install of UNR 10.10, all went well with that. After the first log in it found the Wifi and checked for updates. Updated the system and then it went to restart the system due to a Kernel upgrade. Once I did this, that is when the issues started. Firstly when booting up, it just sat at the Ubuntu boot up screen saying:
"The disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present"
'Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery'
So firstly I hit S, this presented me with several error boxes (as expected due to setup/config files sitting in my /home folder), I then found that I wasn't able to connect to my wifi (not that it can't see it, just that it won't connect) each time I try and connect it just comes up saying that the wifi is disconnected. Of all the things to fail I was expecting the Bluetooth to and it didn't. Anyway the computer specs are: MSI Wind U100, upgraded to 2 Gig Ram, 320Gig HDD, and wifi card is the Realtek RTL8187SE.
HDD is setup as:
4Gig for Swap (/dev/sdb1)
6Gig for / (/dev/sdb5)
Remainder is /home (/dev/sdb6) (I did make this an encrypted partition)
Can't do any screen shots as I am not able to connect to the internet on that machine (having to use another computer in the house). I have tried to view the fstab file and I am not able to.
I had Ubuntu working perfectly until I installed updates for the proprietary Nvidia drivers.Now Ubuntu freezes at the Ubuntu loading screen. Im using Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.I used to know how to access the terminal at bootup but I no longer remember.

But after automatic update to 2.6.35-23 updater install just linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic without headers. In result kernel modules of nVidia driver not compiled and next boot X server can not start.
Now I can install 2.6.35-24 image and headers by hands, but how to explain updater not forget to update headers next time and why this problem occurs?

I unlike before where when I select Ubuntu at boot up time and it just goes into it I am getting this black screen called GNU GRUB. What do I do here? Has Linux got corrupted by the updates I downloaded?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHere is my problem: I am using ubuntu 10.10 64 bit installed on a HP tx2 1274nr laptop. I can get my wireless to work on both the Broadcom B43 wireless driver and the Broadcom STA wireless driver. Though only one can be active at a time.
My problem lies in I can activate either driver until I reboot the laptop. then it becomes inactive.
Is there a fix for this problem. I would like to have my wireless active after restarting.
