Ubuntu :: Random Log Out / Stop This?

Jun 5, 2011

I have been experiencing some random log out, specially in times like downloading big files, and consequently messing up my downloads. It's like browsing internet, a few other applications opened an out of nowhere a black screen an command boot load and then log in screen asking for password. This has been happening since I installed natty. I experience any kind of crash alert, freezing or slowdown before it happens, just out of the sudden it happens.

Any advice, help? How do I report a bug without a clear idea of what's going on?

Ubuntu :: X64 'Random' Kernel Panic On Laptop / Stop This?

I'm on an Acer Aspire 7535 Laptop running a dual boot with 10.10 and Windows 7. Although a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't seem to give me any problems, after a few updates, my laptop would lock up and give a black screen while using 10.10. The kernel panic seems to happen randomly, either taking minutes or hours to happen, whether I am doing anything or idling.

Ubuntu Installation :: OpenLDAP Slapd / Can't Stop The Service With Service Slapd Stop?

Oct 20, 2010

I am trying to setup LDAP server on Ubuntu 10.04 and am sticking to the old /etc/ldap/slapd.conf file configuration.

I had to comment ldapi:/// from /etc/default/slapd since it was giving 'Address already in use error'. Also had to juggle with pid directory and file issues

After that I was able to start the slapd daemon (service slapd start) but now I am running into multiple issues:

1. Can't stop the service with service slapd stop

Code:
## Service stop returns 0, maybe because start-stop-daemon is not giving error
#service slapd stop
Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd.
# echo $?
0

Will switching to BDB database resolve this ?Also can't I slapcat at non-root user ??

Today was the second time I have had a "random logout"I will be surfing the web and when I move my pointer on the touch pad of my laptop the screen goes black and I hear the sound of a logout. When I log back in and open Firefox my stuff is still there but this is very annoying. Is there any fix for this?

Ubuntu :: Random Freezes In 10.10?

Jan 15, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu for a while now, and ever since I installed 10.10 (I did a clean install) I've been having problems with the computer completely locking up... nothing is responsive. I've not had this problem on any prior Ubuntu version. The problem started after I installed the updates for ubuntu... I have a hunch that its either the nvidia driver i installed or the latest kernel thats causing the problem. I'm using the proprietary driver for nvidia and my card is a GeForce6100 nForce 405... the kernel 2.6.35-22... as you can imagine its quite annoying having the computer lock up.. P.S.- the freezes aren't exactly random, they happen generally when I'm using high CPU %'s (e.g. when i import all my music at once to rhythmbox and playing spring rts)

Ubuntu :: Random Shutdown/Power Off?

Jan 24, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu on and off since 8.04, but only last week decided to make a real switch across to it.After installing 9.10 64bit though, my laptop while running Ubuntu just turns itself off at completely random times - it doesn't seem to go through any shut down procedure or anything, it's more like the power's just suddenly cut. It sometimes happens 5 minutes after being turned on, or sometimes 4 or 5 hours, it really is random.I really have no idea where to even begin trying to stop this. I think it must be a software thing because this has never happened with windows or earlier versions of Ubuntu, but other than that I don't know what to do to stop this.I'm dual booting Windows 7 32bit and Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, and this is on a Toshiba L350-D 11-D laptop, which has a 64bit AMD processor.

Ubuntu :: Remove A Random App From Startup?

Feb 11, 2010

Karmic - When I start up and log in, a window for KDE Desktop Sharing Invitation automatically pops up.

Closing it doesn't prevent it from popping up on next startup.

There doesn't appear to be any option to "Don't show on startup."

When I go to System -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Autostart, it does not appear under Desktop File. The only thing that appears under "Script File" is gtk-2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh gtk2engines... which does not appear to be the issue.

I'm guessing there's a shell command that will give me a more in-depth look at what should and should not run upon startup? Would really like to startup with a clean screen!

Ubuntu :: Random Crashes While Web Browsing / Why Is So?

May 6, 2010

(Update 5/19: I can now reproduce the bug either booted normally or from the live CD)

I've got the strangest bug and no idea what is causing it. While web browsing, sometimes the OS will completely crash. The crash always goes the same way:

First, it shows some text on the screen too fast for me to read, but it looks like red ASCII bullet points followed by white text, both over a black background.

* SOMETHING SOMETHING
* SOMETHING SOMETHING
* SOMETHING SOMETHING

After doing this for about half a second, it enters some kind of loop. The top half of the screen alternates between black/white vertical bars and solid black, while the bottom half of the screen remains solid black.

The only way I've been able to get out of this is by pressing the power button, and doing so shows me the *buntu logo (currently using Xubuntu) and then turns itself off.

Here's why I can't figure out what's wrong:The crash happens in GNOME, KDE, and XFCE. I have since uninstalled KDE because I was just checking to see if it still crashed.
Both Firefox and Google Chrome cause the crash.
No other programs seem to crash this way; just the web browsers. I've played games and listened to music for hours with no problems.
Opening the same pages doesn't reproduce the crash. It happens randomly every hour or so.
Even simple pages (like tabs of JPEGs with no HTML) cause the crash.
This is a recent install from an Ubuntu 10.04 CD.
I was previously using Kubuntu 8.04 and had no issues.

Ubuntu :: Random Kernels Don't Boot

Sep 17, 2010

I seem to be having a problem booting into ubuntu 10.04 (and 9.10 before I upgraded a while back). It's been ongoing for a while now, but I can't seem to actually even get to the login screen. Some kernels just give me a blank screen, and others hang at the ubuntu logo (http://i.cbsi.com.au/story_media/339...ic-koala_1.jpg). It seems to be totally random, and I can't seem to even narrow down which kernels do what. It seems to be a game every time I reboot. Perhaps it has something to do with the beta 2.6.32-rc6 kernel I installed (by clicking on the .deb) a while back? I'm not too sure how to uninstall it, but I first installed it I think back at 9.04, and it always seems to be the first option in grub. Can I clean out my old kernels somehow? Or is that dangerous?

Maybe it's caused by graphics drivers? "Safe mode" doesn't seem to work any better though. And I can't get to the TTY terminals by <ctrl><alt><1-6> either, which would suggest to me that it isn't a graphics issue? I don't see the login screen, nor do I always see the splash screen.

Ubuntu :: Natty Keeps Crashing At Random?

today i upgraded to ubuntu 11.04. it was a somewhat successful install (see here, another thread i made about the install itself:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...5#post10731595). now, however, unity (or ubuntu itself?) is crashing and going to a blank screen for seemingly no reason. the screen will freeze for about 3 seconds, and then it all goes black, no error text/message or anything. it seems though, that ubuntu is still running, because i was able hit ctrl-alt-f1 and it worked.

Ubuntu :: Random Freeze Of Natty?

Jul 5, 2011

I had installed Ubuntu Studio Natty from scratch onto a fresh partition, keeping Ubuntu Studio Maverick on another partition until I was sure Natty was working right. But whenever I tried using Natty the system would totally freeze, or so it seemed. Everything would freeze except the mouse pointer. Even the clock, which I have displaying seconds, would stop counting. I searched all over and there seemed to be little agreement about the cause of this, but a lot of people seemed to be experiencing it. It seemed to me however that there was a trend toward blaming new 3D features, and some tips suggested starting with 3D display features disabled; I forget now how to do that, but I do know that it didn't work for me.

After sort of giving up for a couple of months and going back to Maverick I had the idea to try installing (actually "activating") the Nvidia proprietary driver---and the problem seems to have been totally fixed. That's literally all I did, and for at least a few weeks, maybe a month or more, no freezes.

I should add that after a while the symptoms revealed that it wasn't necessarily that the computer was freezing, it was that it would rev up to maximum CPU usage and stay there, with a restart the only solution, until it would start again, seemingly at random, after several minutes to a half hour usually.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCF116FX laptop.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 LTS Random Freeze - Hang-up

Jul 20, 2011

My problem is that my server randomly hangs. If I remember right it started after an kernel update (can't really remember if it was a kernel update specific, but I did install new updates before this problem occurred), and then I noticed my server was down one day, after that the problems/random freezes continued. And there are no pattern/interval between the freeze ups.

I think that all this started for about 3 weeks ago, so I've never had this problem with Ubuntu 10.04 before.

At first, I thought the source to my problem was an old IDE which I accidentally left in when installing Ubuntu at the first time, so GRUB was sitting on that one. So I backed up almost all of my data, reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 (downloaded from the website) but this time without the old IDE drive. Everything seemed to work, had no crashes or freezes. I do have to mention that the same thing happend to the live CD before I removed the old IDE.

But now the fresh install of Ubuntu seems to hang too. And the worst part of this is that I can't really do anything about it to test or look up what may cause the problem, as I have to access it remotely because I'm on vacation right now (I'll have to get my friend over there and restart it).

When the computer hangs it comes inaccessible from the network, can't even see that it is up in my router. But I do know it is running, else it would have been shut off and then started up again and work.

Before I re-installed it, this problem could be reproduced by surfing the web and watching flash videos in either chromium or Firefox.

And I do know it sounds silly to run a server with the desktop edition installed, but if I don't have any other computer accessible, I use my server instead.

My server specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5 GHz
GFX: XFX Nvidia Geforce 8600GT
Mobo: EVGA 750i FTW
RAM: Corsair Dominator 2GB
HDD: Western Digital 500 GB

I also have no special effects nor do I use any proprietary drivers (I did before I re-installed).

Any ideas of what it might be? Is it a bug which came with the updates, like a bug in the kernel?

I've noticed that there actually are alot of threads like mine around here, but none have provided a working solution.

Ubuntu :: Firefox V Random Crashes

Jul 24, 2011

Recently my Firefox 5.0 started to crash randomly. This morning, it crashed twice within three minutes. I believe that it crashes mostly during loading something (such as a new tab), but it can also just crash when nothing is being done to it. I can be reading one page of text and it crashes. When it crashes, there is a "Submit a report" thing. When I click Restart Firefox, it doesn't. What I can think of is the use of Flash-aid and the addition of a 4GB bar of RAM. I re-executed Flash-aid because 1080p full-screen was choppy (still is). I don't think it is a Flash problem since with Gnash, Firefox also crashes. The RAM bar is a Lexar 4GB DDR3 SODIMM 1066-1333MHz. All other programs run correctly. I have re-installed Firefox, Firefox-branding and such in Synaptic. Still crashes.
