Jan 17, 2010So my machine crashed and as far as I can tell it wasn't associated with any particular program. Is there some log I can investigate to see if I can determine what caused the crash?

Ubuntu :: Debug Random Freezes In Gnome?
Apr 10, 2010At random times (approx. once a day), my whole ubuntu/gnome interface freezes. mouseover-animiations (for example on the icons in the taskbar) keep working, but clicking doesn't do anything anymore. On the keyboard, tab and arrows keeps working, but most other keys don't do anything. The only option seems to be to reboot. After that reboot everything is fine again (for a while)
Once the freeze happens, it freezes both the standard ubuntu panels but also the program I have open at that moment. It doesn't seem to be connected to a specific program I run.
Is there some log, or anything else that I can use to figure out where these freezes are coming from?
Fedora :: Random Firefox Crash - How To Debug
Feb 17, 2010My firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091216 Fedora/3.5.6-1.fc11 Firefox/3.5.6) on Gnome 2.26.3 will randomly crash, without any errors. /var/log/messages & /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything that caused any errors. And it doesn't matter on which website(s) I'm busy with, it will just crash.
My PC has:
Intel Pentium(R) Dual-Core E5200 CPU
4GB DDRII Corsair RAM
3x 160GB SATAII HDD
Asus Nvidia 8800GT graphics card.
I have updated to the latest nVidia drivers

This is on Fedora Core 12 x86 I have disabled the only 3 Firefox plug-ins that I installed yesterday, but this problem has been looming for a long time. Something interesting that I picked up is that Thunderbird will close randomly (very seldom though) as well, so I don't know if it's Firefox specific though.
I have picked up that it happens more often when my PC's memory usage is above 2GB RAM, and memtest86+ didn't indicate any memory problems. If I have less tabs open, it happens less often, but the more tabs I have open, the more often it happens. At the same time, on the same PC, when I'm in Windows XP SP3 (dual boot), I can have many more tabs open as well as Thunderbird, Quickbooks, Photoshop CS3 and some other applications, and it doesn't cash.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Amarok Random Crashes \ Can't Retrieve The Debug Information?
Dec 21, 2010ecently (since upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10) being having problems with Amarok randomly crashing.There doesn't seem to be any pattern and it normally just disappears and music stops. Occasionally it comes up with the KDE crash tracker but it can't retrieve the debug information (although i do have amarok-dbg installed, not sure what else i need for that to work though)Anyway i have run it from the terminal and this is the output i got towards the end:

Fedora :: Live / DVDinstall Hangs On Random Times - Debug It?
Jul 23, 2010I get the newest fedora 13 dvd install & the live cd. Put on the disk and try to install. But the installer hangs on random times, so i cant install the system. Sometimes hangs on the anaconda start, others in the partition tables, others in the language section.
i try to run the live cd and install from there. Ok the first time the cd boot very nice . But when i try to install , the pc hangs again. Other times the boot from live even finish, when the last percents r coming, hangs again.
I all hangs, the dvd drive stop's and never return. So the Fan of cpu start to run very quickly and stay there forever until my patience permits.
So i use the ubuntu installer ( almost 4 years with u fedora, and need ubuntu installer!?shame on u) and search some information about the case. Yes, the last ubuntu boot,install, and run out of the box very quickly!
I see others with Dell & others brands still have problems with hangs and freezing , in boot and installs, so the first thing i search was the kernel parameters and try to use some flags.
I think the source of this kind of problem is the acpi . When i check the flag pci=noacpi or acpi=off , i have see that on the pre-anaconda start, when u choose the english language in text mode, clicking next the installer cant anymore find the media DVD, and the hard disk with the partition table. Sometimes the installer brings me the option to search in the ubuntu partitions, sometimes no.
How to debug and search the source of the problem? Any way? code...

I downloaded de Iso, burnt on cd and restart the laptop with the cd inside it.The hard disk does not have any partition, it's empty, I suppose installation gives that opcion.At the begining of the installation, before any interactivity, I get this error:

Server :: Debug Out-of-memory Error After The Fact?
Jun 22, 2010Last night a RHEL server in our cluster unexpectedly ran out of memory and became unable to perform its purpose. I say unexpectedly, because it had been purring away for ~385 days of uptime without a twitch. It has 16GB of memory, of which on average 2GB are in use. I see no unusual traffic in e.g. HTTPD log files. how to approach tracking down why this might have happened, with a view to preventing a reoccurrence.

Hardware :: Trying To Debug Memory Error Lockup - Kernel Panic
Jan 31, 2010I am having a problem with lockups on a new FC12 box (dual core 3 ghz, 4 gb memory, HDPVR, nvidia 8400gs). This happens reliably when replaying MythTV videos, but also randomly at other times using other apps. Usually but not always this is accompanied by a kernel panic (caps lock + scroll lock lights flash on keyboard).

I know it needs to run more, but given the reliability of this problem with MythTV video playback I am wondering if the problem could be in the video card memory. Any linux (or bootable) tester for video memory? All I am able to find are some things for windoze such as this. Also is there any way to track that address from the core dump back to a physical location?

Ubuntu :: Udevd-work Random Error On Boot On Raid0
Oct 12, 2010I have a Raid0 setup (see below for details) connected to the ICH10R raid chip on my Gigabyte EX58-UD4P motherboard. On every second og third boot I get the following error:

The system halts for a seconds or two and then boots on like nothing has happend.
My setup is as follows:
Two 500gb discs in Raid0 on the ICH10R. The first partition 100 mb is a Windows 7 system partition (gaming etc.) and then a 300gb partition for the actual Windos install. Then Ubuntu 10.10 with /, /home, /swap and then five data partitions. Grub is on the Windows system partition.
Ubuntu 10.10 x64 installed via USB. No problems during install. Besides that I have 2x300gb dics on the Gigabyte built in raid controller. Installed with a Hackintos setup using Mac software raid.My fstab looks like this:

CentOS 5 :: Getting Error Message And Random Hangs / Fix This?
Oct 2, 2009I recently installed CentOS 5.3 on a Dell PowerEdge 1800 server that used to have Microsoft Windows SBS 2003 on it. Everything seemed to be going fine until a few days ago. Here's the sum of it all...
- System seems to randomly hang, at which it becomes unavailable on the network (can't be pinged, monitor won't come back on, and you can't wake it up... have to reboot, the scroll lock and caps lock keys flash at the same time)
- Received this error message...

You probably have a hardware problem with your RAM chips.

...it doesn't crash at this point though. I ran memtest86 twice and did not experience any problems. I updated the BIOS to the newest version, which contained a few bug fixes, but still experienced the same problems

May 6, 2011I experienced a strange random error that appears to have been my PC losing contact with the PC's 1.5 TB SATA drive.
This happened once (thus far only once - about two hours ago) on my Intel Core i7 920 PC with a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 mother board running openSUSE-11.4 with KDE-4.4.4. A reboot failed to fix the problem but a cold shut down restart did.
Some details ...
I had a zillion apps open, connected to my mother's PC in North America (from here in Europe) using vnc, had thunderbird, firefox, many konsole sessions, and various leafpad editor sessions.
Firefox appeared to hang, so I tried to close the Firefox page, but the PC appeared frozen (although the mouse would move). Then after about 60 seconds, the screen flashed, firefox closed (crashed may be more accurate) and I had my desktop back, ... sort of .... And I was able to go to the desktop area where vnc was running and access my mother's PC. But I was missing almost all the icons off my KDE destkop and most the icons off the panel at the bottom of the desktop.
I tried going to <CTRL><ALT><F1> and then <CTRL><ALT><F7> but that made no difference. I tried going to <CTRL><ALT><F1> to login but it would not let me login as a regular user, nor as root. Nor could I ssh into the PC. After <CTRL><ALT><F7> back at the crippled GUI, I typed 'shutdown -r now' (as root) but the command was not recognized. Neither was 'top' (as a regular user), nor 'fdisk' (as root). Dir was recognized as a regular user as was CD. But I did not believe the information those commands were giving me (it did not appear up to date).
Eventually I killed X with <CTRL><ALT><Backspace> (twice) and then forced a shutdown start with <CTRL><ALT><DELETE>, but then the PC hung during the shutdown, with the hard drive light on solid. That never happens. After a minute of that I decided to hit the 'hardware' reset. The PC restarted, but was incredibly slow to go through the motherboard boot menu's and it reported the hard drive not detected and would not boot. I did a <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> to restart, and pressed DEL to go to BIOS, and then noted in BIOS that the SATA drive was not detected.
I checked the temperature and the PC was a nominal cool temperature (38 to 40 deg c).
I then switched OFF the PC. I also turned the OFF switch on the back OFF for good measure. I waited a minute. And I turned ON again the PC.
The PC booted normally as if nothing had happened.
Most bizarre and a bit of a fright. My Linux is usually rock solid.
Anyway, ... no more investigation for now. I'm doing a massive backup of all data since my last backup. This will take a while as I have about 400 GB of home movies (at various stages of processing) from my home video camera to backup to an external hard drive.
I may pickup another 2TB external drive this weekend, just to ensure I have multiple backups.

Ubuntu :: Tools (gui) To Debug / Configure Xkb In A User Friendly Way?
May 9, 2010Are there any tools (gui?) that make the xkb configuration easier? I know xev, but that sadly only displays the keycode and the character, but not the shortcuts like <LSGT> that xkb is using internally. I am stuck with the old problem of improperly mapped keys on my German Apple Aluminium Keyboard. My old workarounds that worked with Hardy and Karmic (modified "de" files in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols) do not work anymore in Lucid.

Fedora Networking :: How To Debug A Network
Aug 27, 2009I built my wife a new computer about a month ago, from a barebones kit. It seems to be working fine, except that it will not connect to a known-good internet connection. I can put the cable that is connected to her ethernet port on my computer (also built from a barebones kit) and my computer connects automatically. The network is a cable modem followed by a six port router. Two of the ports, plus the one my wife's computer is on, are in use, but all have been checked, and all work.I thought there might be a hardware problem with the onboard etherneet port that is part of the motherboard, but adding a separate ethernet NIC card did not help; it simply gave me another port that would not connect. I have since removed the second ethernet port.
I am using the default Fedora 10 installation from a DVD I got a few months ago with a magazine. It is exactly the same installation I put on my computer, which works fine. I also put Fedora 10, since upgraded to 11, on the machine in the basement, which also connected okay. The GUI used is Gnome.So the question is, how do I go about debugging what might be wrong? Once I find what's wrong, I will almost certainly need help fixing it, but that is for later.
