Ubuntu :: Programs Silently Crash When Mem Use Is High

Feb 4, 2010

I'm a Linux noob. I'm using Karmic on a laptop with 1.5GB RAM and same as swap partition. Generally I'm happy with the mem usage. I have MySQL, SVN, Apache/PHP/xdebug, firefox w/ dev addons, Eclipse PDT and, of course, my music :) running at the same time, generally ok. I have the System Monitor's mem display on the top bar (dunno proper name) and can watch usage increase. Also the swap file's often only 100 - 300 megs.

However... from time to time I notice that as the programs' mem use gets close to 100% in the little sys monitor display the HD thrashes for 5 - 10 mins, after which some progs have silently crashed. AFAIR it always involves Eclipse (so maybe I should post on their boards), but not only. This last time I lost VLC and therefore my music. Obviously losing your music's far more important than losing some coding, so that's why I'm trying to resolve it now:)

I'm running Munin on my system (tho not because of this issue) and took a look at mem usage immediately before it happened. Here's the pic - you can see the sudden drop as the two progs (only AFAIK) closed on the very right side of the image. I'm not a guru here and am not sure if there's much to infer. I know some recommend 2xRAM for swap, but max committed was only 2.29 compared to potential 3, so that shouldn't be a problem? In fact the swap file never got large at all AFAICT. (Btw swappiness = default = 60.)

Ubuntu :: High X CPU Usage When Using KDE Programs (10.04)?

May 12, 2010

I have recently upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. I am having trouble with CPU usage by the X server. When running KDE programs (for example Kontact and Amarok) my computer is becoming very sluggish. This seems to be because X is using 90-100% of the CPU constantly when there are any changes to the application (any sort of redraw, even the mouse moving across the screen). I don't experience this with other applications (I am currently writing this from Chromium with no issues at all). Below is all the relevant information I can think to include.

INSTALL PROCESS: Fresh install from Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD. My /home direrctory is on a separate partition so that has remained unchanged from 9.10. After installing Ubuntu, I installed the kubuntu-desktop package to install kdm and the KDE desktop.

The only real change from my last install is that /var is now also a separate partition (in a bid to save my MySQL data should I have to reinstall again) but it is on the same hard drive as my root partition and so shouldn't be causing any performance issues.

MY X SETUP: Three screen setup using onboard and PCI graphics cards. This worked perfectly before and, after reconfiguring X using nvidia-xconfig works almost as well again. Except that one of my monitors autodetects at 1280x1024 where before it was a higher (and widescreen) resolution.

The issue only presents itself when KDE application screens are visible and disappears when they are hidden (either minimised or closed) As far as Ican tell it could be an X, Qt or KDE issue. But I am not sure what versions of these will have been changed in the upgrade.

Ubuntu :: Gksudo/gksu Silently Refuses To Do Anything

Jun 2, 2011

This comes at some point after installing GNS3 and Dynamips, which require administrator access as GUI's. Although, the first couple times I tried to run GNS3 as administrator, it worked fine. I do still receive the password prompt, whether running from the command line or the context menu. Note that GNS3 is the first application for which I've needed to run gksudo, so this may have been an issue before the above were installed, although I've always been able to run "Open as Administrator" in Nautilus and "Synaptic Package Manager," which now will not run either.

Ubuntu :: Installation Runs Silently And Then Gets Stuck / Resolve This?

Jan 11, 2010

I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 using both Ubuntu Desktop CD and the Netbook Remix on a EEEPC 1005HA with an external CD drive.

In both cases I don't get any graphical interface during the installation. The CD is apparently installing everything silently, without letting me change anything on the way, and then it gets stuck.

The only screen I get is the first one, with the options to "try Ubuntu" or "install Ubuntu".

What's going on?

Server :: Make Sendmail Silently Discard 'Catchall' Addresses

Aug 4, 2011

Using sendmail, I am trying to setup a catchall address to silently discard spam mail sent to undefined users. I don't want to bounce a reply for "no user" as this often goes back to munged or innocent addresses.

I have a number of domains, so my virtuser table currently looks rather like this:

Code:

The last line is the "catchall" which is intended to ensure that any undefined users from either my_domain.com or my_domain.co.uk is forwarded to the non-existent "catchall" user account. Note that all mail sent to my_domain.com is passed across to my_domain.co.uk at the very start so all the following rules should apply to messages received at both domains. (Both of these domains appear in the

Being non-existent, I setup the following rules in the access data table:

Code:

This way, if I send an email to 'user1@my_domain.com' it is received and delivered to user1@my_domain.co.uk, but if I send an email to 'rubbish@my_domain.com' it *should* be received and silently discarded.

Unfortunately what actually happens is the server responds with:

Now, (just for testing), I made "catchall" an alias for the "postmaster" account and the mail was then received and delivered into the postmaster mailbox. So I know the virtuser rule is working. The account "catchall", however, is not being silently dropped as desired in either configuration.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with a Laserjet 5M printer. When I attempt to print a job from Firefox or from Okular, the job never gets onto the print queue. However, I can print test pages on the printer and also print from OpenOffice, so this seems to be app-dependent. I know the jobs aren't being queued because the job number doesn't increase (as shown by the jobs for the test pages). Both Firefox and Ocular give every indication that the print job has been processed correctly.

Fedora :: Grsync/rsync Crash / Grsync Run For Some Time And Once It Nears Completion It Will Crash?

Jun 14, 2011

I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:

grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.
