For the last 6 months the fan has been on more and more whenever I m online or listening/watching media.Its getting to the point where the computer is virtually unusale as the noise is so louod and stress inducing-Does my cache need clearing and if so how do I do it?(it seems to be "plugin container" thats usually causing the problem, but if you stop it then things dont work properly)

View 4 Replies View RelatedDuring downloads, the top command shows the Firefox process at 100% CPU. Yesterday I tried to download an .iso image. After a few hours the Firefox window would not refresh nor would it respond to input. I tried the wget command. It used negligible CPU time and completed in 28 minutes.
This problem is easy to reproduce because it happens every time I download a file in Firefox. It also happens when I use a fresh profile to run Firefox without any extensions or plugins.
This is Firefox 3.6.12 on Fedora 14.
For some reason after I close firefox , firefox-bin keeps running and it eats more cpu than when firefox was open, a lot more. Same thing with seamonkey, seamonkey-bin keeps running after it is closed.

2) Firefox closed, CPU is almost 50%
i don't know what might be the problem but smplayer keeps starting on the second desktop no other application has shown this behavior yet but i don't know if this is just because i haven't used one that will or if it is just smplayer

However, sound keeps disappearing in smplayer and won't come back until I reboot. Sound is still present in all other players including mplayer.
Running smplayer from the command line gives no output so I don't know what night be wrong. Volume is at max and not muted.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and have it hooked up to my HDTV. My GPU is an 8600 GT and I am using the current nvidia driver. Mother board is GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H, CPU is AMD 4850e, using 2x1G ram 800MHz. Everything I have installed on it comes straight through Synaptic. Smplayer seems to work fine with the VDPAU selected (cpu usage is nice and low during HD playback), but there is a slight problem that really annoys. Every 2-3 seconds the picture seems to have the hiccups, its as though it gets stuck on one frame for a split second and then jumps to the next.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHad ubuntu 10.10, sound worked fine. wiped that, installed xubuntu 11.04, sound worked fine with banshee. had some stability issues, so i then installed xubuntu 10.10. now, on the fresh install, i only have sound from smplayer when playing videos. NO sound from banshee, vlc(videos or otherwise), parole, or exaile. neither when IEC959 is active no disabled.
here is a screenshot of alsamixer showing that volume is up, and un-muted. and the xfce4-mixer as well.however, the upper right panel indicator looks like a mute symbol, or at least a no volume symbol. ive tried removing, purging, then re-installing banshee multiple times. ive checked the other sound cards listed in xfce4-mixer; they are all un-muted (found this on a couple forums, fixed this problem for a few people, but not me!). What can I do?

the dialog for "open with other application" is broken in that you cannot use 'remember this application for "AVI Video" files'. they always open with Totem. while totem is very capable, it lags at times and sometimes loses the stream if the lag is too long, while smplayer is not as finicky. besides, smplayer has more options that i require.i wish dearly to be able to double click an avi/mkv/etc video file and have it open in smplayer. are there instructions somewhere to do this? i have searched extensively, but there are too many threads that are similar that don't answer my question.

Now I can play back these files perfectly with mplayer from teh command line but when I open them with smplayer there is no video, just (choppy) sound. Xine also plays them back now although it didn't before. Once the drop-down menu animation has completed, the video playback will play normally. This happens when using VDPAU to play back H.264 MKV files. Audio playback of the video is never interrupted. why VDPAU will not play nice with SMplayer & Compiz?

The sound device is just shown as "default" but I have no idea what that is.I have just downloaded another file and when I clicked on it SMPlayer opened and started to play but there was no sound.
Wondered why SMPlayer started instead of VLC and saw that the newest file was .mp4, however SMPlayer doesn't give any sound with the .flv videos either, on the other hand VLC plays .mp4 files too with sound.However when I searched for the suggested file I couldn't find it but before I go any further, is this a real problem or could it be due to having the sound turned off from the keyboard? .

Press to resume fails, but only if you have watched a fair bit or have moved on in the movie.Interestingly the pause symbol comes off as if play has resumed but it's not actually playing. You can press pause again and it shows it as if pausing again.
Darn, this hard to explain.I switched to VLC and it's fine but I can't seem to get that to pick up where I left off (enqueue).ie; if you have the same experience I'd be interested to know.or you know the setting in vlc to resume a movie where you left off..
