After updating recently VLC does not play audio or video, and it does not complain about not being able to do so, even when running from terminal.
The version is VLC media player 1.0.6 Goldeneye.
I have tried resetting the preferences.
I don't know how to troubleshoot any further..
This is a very simple problem, but I'm scratching my head with others..
In composing a simple shell script in class, we can't seem to get the script to execute fully. script was formatted as follows.

echo "good bye for now"
exit
did, Chmod 755 to make executable
type file name "bye"
runs but wont exit.....
it just echos the type"good bye for now
The instructor says it works for him at home....
But it wont work in class...
Is there a reason it wont "exit" the shell as commanded ?
I recently purchased a new Lenovo Thinkpad T420i and am having problems installing the latest version of Squeeze from CD. After receiving the laptop, I started it up, configured Windows 7, and confirmed everything is working correctly. Next I went through the Debian installer, which completed successfully. I'll be dual-booting Windows 7 and Debian, so at the partitioning stage I resized my NTFS partition, added a shared VFAT partition, then used the "Guided" install to create my root and swap partitions. I assumed something was wrong with grub, so I booted the CD into rescue mode and chose to reinstall grub onto the Master Boot Record. But nothing changed. Just to experiment, I went into fdisk, deleted all my new partitions (leaving just the Windows ones), and tried rebooting, but the same error happened. I then went through the Debian installer again, being careful to set everything up correctly, but still, the device won't boot.
I'm not even getting to the grub boot screen, so something is wrong even before the point. Reinstalling grub to the Master Boot Record (grub-install /dev/sda) isn't changing anything. How can I troubleshoot this?
I am running the testing version and am fully up to date. When I try to run evolution, I get the following errors in a terminal. When I launch it normally, I don't see any messages, it just never loads.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a Linux noob. I'm using Karmic on a laptop with 1.5GB RAM and same as swap partition. Generally I'm happy with the mem usage. I have MySQL, SVN, Apache/PHP/xdebug, firefox w/ dev addons, Eclipse PDT and, of course, my music :) running at the same time, generally ok. I have the System Monitor's mem display on the top bar (dunno proper name) and can watch usage increase. Also the swap file's often only 100 - 300 megs.
However... from time to time I notice that as the programs' mem use gets close to 100% in the little sys monitor display the HD thrashes for 5 - 10 mins, after which some progs have silently crashed. AFAIR it always involves Eclipse (so maybe I should post on their boards), but not only. This last time I lost VLC and therefore my music. Obviously losing your music's far more important than losing some coding, so that's why I'm trying to resolve it now:)
I'm running Munin on my system (tho not because of this issue) and took a look at mem usage immediately before it happened. Here's the pic - you can see the sudden drop as the two progs (only AFAIK) closed on the very right side of the image. I'm not a guru here and am not sure if there's much to infer. I know some recommend 2xRAM for swap, but max committed was only 2.29 compared to potential 3, so that shouldn't be a problem? In fact the swap file never got large at all AFAICT. (Btw swappiness = default = 60.)
This comes at some point after installing GNS3 and Dynamips, which require administrator access as GUI's. Although, the first couple times I tried to run GNS3 as administrator, it worked fine. I do still receive the password prompt, whether running from the command line or the context menu. Note that GNS3 is the first application for which I've needed to run gksudo, so this may have been an issue before the above were installed, although I've always been able to run "Open as Administrator" in Nautilus and "Synaptic Package Manager," which now will not run either.
Running Ubuntu 10.10.
I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 using both Ubuntu Desktop CD and the Netbook Remix on a EEEPC 1005HA with an external CD drive.
In both cases I don't get any graphical interface during the installation. The CD is apparently installing everything silently, without letting me change anything on the way, and then it gets stuck.
The only screen I get is the first one, with the options to "try Ubuntu" or "install Ubuntu".
What's going on?
I am working on a bash script which among its operations creates directories using the mkdir command. However, when the directory already exists mkdir mentions that in the command line output.
Is there any way I can make mkdir silently overwrite any existent directory? (no messages in the output). For the same price, could it be done with other commands such as cp or mv?
Using sendmail, I am trying to setup a catchall address to silently discard spam mail sent to undefined users. I don't want to bounce a reply for "no user" as this often goes back to munged or innocent addresses.

Firefox 3.1 beta 3 won't load. When I open the application, the little bouncy icon bounces, and the task manager shows "Firefox Web Browser", but this only stays this way for about 15 seconds then just goes away. No error or anything.
I've had this identical problem when I try to open certain programs with Wine too. Is there some place I can find a detailed error report on these failures?
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 with a Laserjet 5M printer. When I attempt to print a job from Firefox or from Okular, the job never gets onto the print queue. However, I can print test pages on the printer and also print from OpenOffice, so this seems to be app-dependent. I know the jobs aren't being queued because the job number doesn't increase (as shown by the jobs for the test pages). Both Firefox and Ocular give every indication that the print job has been processed correctly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to get rid of some sound issues, in the process I removed Pulseaudio, then I found a post with a couple of packages from a ppa that were made for using Alsa without pulseaudio. I can't find the link now as I'm on a different pc, but 1 package was named Gnome applet, another Gnome media (I think) and I can't recall the third. It really did nothing so I removed them and reinstalled the Pulseaudio packages to atleast get some sound back. I got right back where I started until I rebooted.
Now it gets to the splash screen, flickers a couple times and I get a giant generic login screen If I log into that, I go back to the splash screen and the same login all over again. I tried to repair packages with the recovery mode but it didn't do any good. I also tried renaming xorg.conf just for the hell of it so a new one would be made but that really didn't do anything either.
I have a macbook specs here: I have discs for Ubuntu + Kubuntu, 10.04 and 10.10 for both. When I put these discs in the computer, it reads them and I can boot from them, although when I get to the initial screen where it asks you what to do, like install ect, , , , after I select an option the screen just goes black, I've waited up to 30 minutes but nothing. I can't troubleshoot anything because nothing comes up. I've tried searching online for similar problems to no avail.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Kubuntu installation (9.10) boots up normally and seems to run fine, other than it is very slow to respond to inputs or change screens/ applications etc. It can take 5-10 seconds to respond to simple requests like changing from firefox to dolphin by clicking in the taskbar. It is dual boot with XP, which also seems sluggish, but is bearable.
The computer is barely useable in Kubuntu because of the slow response. I had 9.04 installed before, same problem. I tried searching for drivers for the on board video, thinking that might be it, but came up empty.

Just upgraded to maveric desktop and can't switch to console no longer. Pressing ctrl-alt-f1 etc pauses the screen and removes the mouse pointer, the console is not shown. Pressing ctrl-alt-f7 unfreezes the screen again and shows mouse pointer.
I know it doesn't happen to many other people but happened to me. Any ideas how to troubleshoot/fix?

My machine has run flawlessly for weeks, then all of a sudden I am getting messages that I can't access various directories, and on reboot fsck dumps to a command line. So far I have been able to fix the problem by manually running fsck. However, this is the second time that I have run into this problem; the previous time I ended up throwing out my hard drive and doing a clean install.I am running a clean install of Karmic Koala, software RAID, 4 Gb RAM, two 500 Gb Western Digital SATA drives, with an Intel E7200 2.53 Ghz dual core processor.Among other applications, I run VMware 7.0 for the occasional task for which I need a Windows program.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been running an Ubuntu VM (10.04 LTS) on my Win7 (Home Premium 64bit) desktop successfully for several months now using VMPlayer (v3.1.1). My problem began when I booted up the VM today - my wife decided to reboot the PC without gracefully closing down my applications when Windows told her that she needed to reboot to complete security updates.
When I booted up the VM, the Ubuntu desktop went right back to the exact same state that it was in before the host reboot - the same programs were open, I didn't need to log in, etc. However... I now have no networking. The network icon (NetworkManager Applet 0. shows the red exclamation point. If I click on Auto eth0, it attempts to connect for a bit, and then says "offline".
My VMware Player settings for this VM are configured for bridged networking, and the "network adapter" icon shows online. If I go into the VMWare Player settings and change the networking to NAT, and then click on Auto eth0 again, the networking comes online. However, I don't want NAT - I want this Ubuntu client exposed to my network with it's own IP address.
At this point, I'm really not sure if the problem is within Ubuntu or within VMWare Player, or something on my Win7 host. I have zero skill at troubleshooting within Ubuntu - still fairly new to the linux scene. My Windows firewall is turned off. DHCP is enabled on my network, and the router is available.
Any ideas on how I might further troubleshoot this problem?
Ever since I upgraded to 10.10 (via update, not from scratch), Thunderbird suddenly ramps up CPU usage within the 10 seconds of being started. No add-ons are enabled. Anyone have this problem or can help me troubleshoot?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 3610 notebook. 2 GB RAM. This notebook had Internet access previously via Windows XP (now erased). Here is the partitioned drive. Two ext4 partitions for ubuntu "/" and "/home". Two ntfs partitions possibly for Windows. I have booted up the fresh installation of ubuntu 10.10. I had some glitch where I saw "Operating system not found' on booting from HDD and I wondered if this was due to failing drive.
But I've run a full test using Disk Utility and it shows as healthy. This message has gone away (I don't know why) and I can boot into ubuntu. The problem I'm trying to solve is simply no internet connection. Here are some outputs from commands ..

I installed the ubuntu 9.10 cd and for some reason as of last night it only boots halfway. it shows grub, shows loading keymap nd apparmor profiles, then before it shows mpd and apache load it erases everything and stops at a dark grey screen. all before i get a shell of any type. if i leave it alonethe screen still darkens like its going to sleep. is there any way to troubleshoot and fix this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed F11 only to find my soundcard wasn't supported (Asus Xonar Essence STX). I read around a bit and saw that kernel 2.6.30 supported it, so I upped the kernel to 2.6.34
So I configured/compiled my kernel, restarted and it showed up fine in the boot loader. Only problem I have is when I go to login through the login prompt, it acts like it is going to login only to get kicked back out to the login prompt again. I tried to login through the terminal view.... everything checks out there.
I am fairly new to linux in general so I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. I tried finding an error in it but I couldn't find anything.
Now that the server is set up, whats the best way to troubleshoot this server if problems should arise?

I have a problem with my laptop. I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx installed.
Everytime I start the laptop it works fine til the GNU GRUB page. There I choose code...
So what should I do? Is it something I can do myself or do I have to leave it in or something?
Since upgrading to lucid, I have been experiencing regular system lockups. About once a day, my X desktop will disappear and I'll see a TTY with a few old console messages and at that point everything is completely frozen and I must hard reboot.
I have checked out various logs in /var/log and found nothing at all that indicates the system knew anything bad was happening. What is the correct approach to try to narrow this down?
After installing Linux Multimedia Studio the fonts on my firefox4 browser has slightly changed. I remember during the installation that it installed some fonts so maybe it has something to do with that.
The default font settings on my firefox has remained the same but it looks different than before. On certain websites like facebook the main font looks different. I uninstalled LMMS thinking it would bring back the default font settings but it hasnt.
Any ideas how I can bring it back to my default settings on firefox?
