I've tried lpr [FILE] didn't work I've tried cat [FILE] > /dev/lp0 couldn't figure out how to get to the root prompt and I googled until my googler was sore. All I got was lengthy and confusing user manuals for cat. besides going through the trouble of loading GIMP everytime I want to print something?

I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?

View 7 Replies View RelatedOur one remaining problem seems to be printing. She has an HP OfficeJet 6500 USB printer. We have the computer conntected. Strangely, when I boot from the CD the printer shows up as installed even though I did nothing to install it. After having submitted a print job it shows the printer status as "idle" and the print queue is empty. I tried deleting that printer and re-installing. The installation went as one would expect. However the results are the same. I'm beginning to think that somehow the problem is related to the fact that we are operating from the live CD. getting this thing to print from the live CD.

Make sure you have the "Gutenprint Printer Drivers Package" and "GIMP plugin for gutenprint" installed (add/remove software, search for gutenprint). A printer that uses a tray loading mechanism for printing disc media.
Procedure :
Open/create the image with the GIMP. I find that an image size of 1394 x 1394 is ideal for normal size discs. To create a working area in the image, first create a white circle. To do this, use the circle selection tool and position the cursor at position 0,0 (top left). Then, while holding the shift key down, hold left click and drag the cursor to the bottom right position, which should be 1394,1394. Fill the selection with white colour. Depending on the hub size of your disc you need to also cut out an area in the centre of the white circle approximately 22 mm in diameter. Position the circle selection cursor 11mm above the centre of the image, and 11mm to the left of the centre of the image. Then hold Shift down, hold left click and drag the cursor until the selected area is 22mm x 22mm. Then cut the selection. Now create a new layer above the white circle and create your image, keeping inside the white circle and outside the centre "hole".
If you are using non full face discs, make the centre "hole" bigger accordingly. Create 2 new background layers, one black and one white. The black is so you can preview the image with the correct shape, and the white one is for use when exporting the final finished image for printing. Remember to make the white layer above the black layer, or make the black layer invisible when exporting the image. I have attached a template for your immediate use. Once your image is finished, you should have a white square image, with your graphics arranged within a circle. White is not printed, so you don't need transparency around the edges. Don't put graphics too close to the edges of the circle or you will get ink on the plastic which never dries. (at least not until you have smeared it on your fabulous artwork ! ) Save the file as the default GIMP xcf format to preserve the layers then export it to png.
To print the image onto the disc. With the image open in the GIMP, In File > Page Setup set the paper size to CD - 5 inch and apply. Then go to File > Print with Gutenprint. Use the option to set up printer and find your make and model. Once you have the correct printer selected, lots of extra options become available.
My Printer settings are:
Print Quality - Best
Media Type - Photo paper
Media Source - Print to CD
CD hub size - Normal
Ink Set - Epson Standard inks
Resolution - 720 dpi
Ink Type - 6 color photo
Page Size - CD - 5 inch
(All the other settings are left as default)
On the Output tab there are more options for adjusting the print quality. Just click "Adjust Output". If you have adjusted the output, close that window then click "Print and Save Settings", otherwise just click "Print and Save Settings". It should fire up straight away. These settings are based on my Epson R200, so you may have to tweak them for your printer model.
I have a network printer directly connected via ethernet cable to an Ubuntu netbook, but pinging the printer fails, giving "Host Unreachable". The network light on the ethernet socket is lit green, and there is nothing else cable-connected to the network - just a simple cable connection between the netbook ethernet socket and the Network printer (a HP Laserjet 4200n). Ping works fine if I plug the cable into a different machine (a Win XP box) and ping from there, so it's not a cable or IP address problem.
This sounds simple enough and should work, but I'm stumped. Clues, anyone?
I cannot print pdf files. I click print in evince everything seems ok but nothing comes out on the printer. I receive no error. I have a HP printer (LasterJet 3005n) attached over a network. I am running 9.10 on a Dell Optiplex. I did not have this problem in 9.04. I had this problem immediately after I did a fresh install of 9.10. I can print open office documents without any problem, just not pdfs. I have the same problem with my serval laptop (also running 9.10).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've looked at all the threads that I can find on the HP Deskjet D1660. I am unable to print. I've also tried to manually install the hplip files with no help. The only thing that I can find says to use a driver 3.10.2 but all I can find is 3.10.6 and 3.10.6.15. But non of this is working. XP prints fine but I want Ubuntu to work fine too. This is why I bought this printer in the first place.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on an emachine with a celeron micro processor and it has 2 gig memory. I have tried the usb cable in every usb slot available and ever thing else. When I go go print a job the hp panel shows that job is sent to printer and that the printer is printing it. Unfortunately it never get printed. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to print to a network printer from my 9.10 install. The printer is Canon_MF4360-4390, when browsing for printers, cups finds it immediately. I found drivers for this printer online (driver is called UFR_II_Printer_Driver_for_Linux_V200_uk_EN). The drivers installed without any problems.
I can go through cups and add the printer successfully. I can even print a test page that shows up in the queue as completed. However, nothing comes out of the printer. Also, there is nothing in /var/log/cups/error_log to show that an error has occurred.[URL]..

Everything goes along just fine until "print test page" No go.
The printer shows up in the "Printing -local host" window.
Under "printer properties" the "Make and Model"are showing the correct device in the correct location.
The "Printer State" shows "idle - /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
Is there something I might have missed in the set-up?

I have an old desktop that I'm trying to set up as a home backup/print server. Backup was trivial, but am having issues getting the printing to work. The printer is connected to the server running Ubuntu Server 9.10 (no gui). If I access the printer via http://hostname:631/printers/, I am able to print a test page, so I know the printer is working; however, I am having no luck from Windows. Windows can see the printer when browsed via hostname, but I am unable to connect. Windows says "Windows cannot connect to the printer" without indicating why.

When I go to System Admin/Printing to add my printers, screen says I am not connected to localhost and I am unable to use Add printer. When I used version 9.10, I added a network + a local printer by this method but I'm not sure what I have done wrong this time around.
I have an HP F300 series all in one printer. Until about 2 months ago it worked fine in all variations. Now it wont print. I am using Super Os 9.10 version. The printer runs but doesn't print. It works fine in windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn Ubuntu 10.10, I have my printer, an Epson D120, shared. I can print from the computer itself, but other computers cannot print to it. Both Ubuntu and Windows machines have the printer successfully installed. They can access it, I can access CUPS from all these machines and the the job queue even reports the jobs sent from these computers. But the page count is unknown and nothing is printed, although it says the job is completed.
I'm quite desperate to get this to work. It would suck if I need to go back to Windows just because some minor thing goes wrong. I really don't understand why local prints are OK, but prints from the network are not working.

I have a windows 2008 server that has 2 printers attached, both are shared in the same way with the same access rites. One printer I can print to without any issues, I get prompted for my domain username and password then the job is processed, the other I can't print to. When printing a test page cups just ques the job and I get errors in the logs :

My HP Deskjet D-2660 will not print. I can print to file but not the printer. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and have no other problems. I have installed hpip and hpijs form HP and cups was made available via and upgrade. I have a lot of data from var/log/cups/error_log but don't know what it is supposed to say.
I can print to file and everything else I check seems to say that all is right. Is there any glaring faults that I should look for?? As I stated on the other post I get a message that the print job has been sent to the printer and then another message stating that the print job has completed. In system/administration/printing, the printer shows up properly and has a green check mark on it. Connected to localhost shows at the bottom of the little window. Under /printer it shows shared and enabled Then under printer/properties, it shows as the HP Deskjet D2600 series the location is given as john-desktop It defines the Device URI: hp:/usb/Deskjet_D2600_series?serial=CN9ANDF0ZT05C9 shows the Make and Model HP Deskjet d2600 Series hpijs,.. printer state: idle
Across the bottom it theoretically allows you to print a test page or clean the print heads. (won't print) On the printing-local host small page that opens under system/administration/printing there is no group under that heading only new group or new group from selection. I never named a group since I am the only user.
I have shut the printer down and disconnected the USB and rebooted. Then connect the power and plug in the USB cable I get all the same answers nothing appears to change. Here is some of the var/log/cups/error_log file. It does this over and over every minute same thing. The print que is empty from both administration and applications.

I can't print pdf files from the Ubuntu PDF viweer on my printer - I get a message that 'pdftorasterfailed'. My workaround is to print to file then print the postscript file. Annoying but it works. I have a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 and my basement computer running Windows 7. I want to be able to access files on on both computers from either. I also want to be able to print from my laptop to the printer attached to the basement computer. I finally got printing working. Then I tackled the filesharing. I finally get filesharing working and now, I can't get printing working again, even though I've gone back to the version of smb.conf that I had when I was able to print. So here is what I've got.

When I look at my printer properties in Ubuntu I see the status: Idle - Unable to connect to CIFS host after (tried 3 times) Cups Error Log When I look at the Printer Error Log, I see: (partial) Printer log extract.txt I can ping the IP address of the windows box 192.168.0.5, but when I try to ping the name owner-pc it fails. This would lead me to beleive that the there is a name resolution problem.

I've tried to copy different tutorials so that I can put on paper everything prints except the important things(commands & script examples. Is this some kind of copy-right? If not issue with copy-right is it possible to have complete copy. Also I haven't seen in PDF form, I just need to copy so I can reference without having to be on computer.
View 4 Replies View RelatedA few months ago a client had me build a small file server running OpenSuse for them. They also had me install an HP Designjet 650C on the server and share it on the network for 2 desktops to print to. All went well and there have been zero problems. They use a few specialty apps that don't have good enough FOSS counterparts, so I couldn't talk them into switching the desktops to Linux, although they were very interested in it. One of the desktops runs Vista and has an XP Pro VM on it (they are considering a Linux VM to go with it so they can dip their toes in the water). There was a locally installed HP OfficeJet 5610 on the machine, but printing from the XP VM was a hassle because they had to tell virtualbox to pass the usb interface to the VM, effectively disabling it in Vista. Then to print in Vista again they had to release the interface back to the host OS. The other desktop (running XP) was also unable to print to it. They asked me to install the 5610 on the server and share it like I did the 650C.
Installing it on the server was easy. I just plugged it in and checked to make sure everything was neat and tidy in YaST. It printed flawlessly. I configured the share identically to the way I shared the 650C. I browsed the network from Vista, found the printer, and installed it using Vista's native driver. Then I sent a print to it from Vista and nothing happened. Vista is very slow to communicate with the printer compared to the 650C, but it will eventually report that the print job was successful. The printer never receives the print, though. Where are the print jobs going? The VM and other desktop are as big of a problem. XP does not natively support the 5610, so I have to download a driver from HP's site. The driver uses a stupid binary installer that will not allow the driver to be manually installed. Running the installer works, but the driver will not install until it sees the printer in a usb port. That won't work because we are connecting to it over a network path. Where can I find a driver that can be manually installed?
