I've been having problems whenever I'm asked for my password inside the Terminal. The most recent one happens when I type this

But then I can't type anything. I try to but nothing happens.
i need to install the new firefox. I have allready downloaded the tar.bz2 package and extract it in a folder. I go to terminal, type sudo make install and appear [sudo] password for severityconcept: but i can't type any character. How to type my password in terminal when i run that command I mentioned above?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I was using AntiX, I liked how I could just type "xlock" in a terminal and it would lock the screen until I came back and typed my password. I saw that there was no "xlock" package, so googling around, I saw it was replaced with xlockmore and xlockmore-gl, neither of which there seems to be a package for in the Squeeze repositories. I tried xscreensaver, but I prefer the simplicity of xlock (and I like that it doesn't leave a daemon runnig when not in use). Is there a way to safely install it, or should I just be looking for an alternative?

I've got the file permissions set, but I'd also like to restrict their access to the terminal. It seems to me that most of the damage that can be done to a computer goes through the terminal.I downloaded Pessulus (I use Gnome)but it doesn't require a password. the profiled user can just open Pessulus and alter their profile -- what's the point?Is there a way I can require a user to enter a password, either for any terminal or Pessulus?I like Pessulus -- it's concise and easy to use. But it doesn't seem very secure as I understand it.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu on my pc in parallel with windows 7 ( I have been running wubi so far ). After the installation was completed I installed chrome and Mathematica ( by using the terminal ). I then restarted the computer. When I restarted ubuntu again I realized that I couldn't type on the Terminal any longer.I can type on anything else, documents, browsers, Mathematica ecc, but, as soo as I try to type over the terminal the mouse pointer disappears and nothing happens. However I can copy paste on the terminal but it is of no use since I cannot use the enter key.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to find all files of a specific type (as determined by the terminal "file" command) from the command line ... and haven't been able to figure out a way to do so. For instance, I'd like to be able to find all JPEG files in my filesystem, even if their names don't end in .jp*. It would be helpful to be able to combine this with other tests in find, so that I could type something like "sudo find / -atime 0 -size +1M -type adobeflash" or something like that.
I've looked for ways to hook find up to file and tinkered around with a few ideas involving pipes, but nothing seems to get what I want.
It installed but I cant seem to run a scan and as there isnt much need for it i want to remove it. The problem is its changed name from what I downloaded it as. Does anyone know what it could be? Ill try and add a pic a bit later, but im on windows at the moment so I cant acces terminal. Also I have Wine installed but would like to remove its root access, Im not sure if it does have root access but I would like it not to if it does, what should I type into the terminal?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and I've been running into a bizarre scenario. So when I open a terminal, I can type commands into it. Then I open a tab (by pressing Ctrl+Shift+T) and can type into it normally as well. But when I close the tab (going back to the original terminal), I suddenly can't type into that terminal -- no characters appear on its command line. It is not a severe issue since if I jump to another window (say Firefox), then come back to that terminal, I can suddenly type again. Also as far as I know this seems to be the only scenario to which this problem occurs. Has anyone ran into the same issue?

However, strangely, for last few days whenever I access the vista partition I don't need to type the password. The partition is just mounted and I can access the files. I would like to know the reasons and if possible to get back the previous situation (needing password to access the vista partition).

Installation seemed to go cleanly, with no errors or warnings, but a long delay while some files were downloading from the overloaded servers. However, after the reboot, the machine was unusable. Can't log in because it won't recognize any characters coming from the keyboard when I try to type my password. Hardware is a Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad R52 with 1.5 GB RAM. Extremely vanilla machine. Possible wrinkle in that I'm trying another VM this time around, using VMware Player 3.0.1. Right now I'm assuming this installation is dead and non-recoverable.

A few minutes ago, without any apparent reason, my gnome-terminal started refusing acceptance of lowercase 'L'. When I hit the 'L' key, the menu toggles between visible and hidden. Note, this is lower case 'L', not uppercase.

How requiring password was changed:
System/Administration/Users and Groups
Clicked on my User
Clicked "Change" next to "Password: Asked on login"
Checked the checkbox for "Don't ask for password on login"
OK'd, everything
Please try this yourself as it might be hard to understand. But the option to change session type (ie: Gnome failsafe instead of reguar Gnome) is only visable along side with the password field.
Is it possible to make the session type setting visable without requiering password on login?
Is there any way not to type password each time I use synaptic or sudo?

View 1 Replies View RelatedSince 2 days, when I type the lowercase 'a' letter in a terminal, nothing is written (it's not the case for the uppercase 'A' letter).
The matter appears with all terminal's software (guake, Terminal, xterm...).
The only way for me to type the 'a' letter is to type 'Insert' key before.
I tried many solutions but the matter is still here.
Here, there is some clarifications and some solutions I tried:
-If I copy and paste a text, 'a' don't appears. For example, if i try to copy and paste
'sudo apt-get install'
'sudo pt-get instll' will appears
-The matter appears 2 days ago. Before that, I removed the .gconf file
-It's not a fresh installation of ubuntu but an update from karmic to lucid. When i was under karmic, I was using KDE. Then I did an upgrade, then I tried Xubuntu and Lubuntu and finally I moved to Ubuntu. The first week under Ubuntu (Gnome) was without any matter and 2 days ago, this matter appeared.
-I tried this following command line:
xmodmap -pke >fichier.conf
and the file called "fichier.conf" (I'm french) contains this line:
keycode 24 = a A a A ae AE ae AE
-When I type this line:
printf "x61
"
a 'a' appears in my terminal.
-In tty1 and all the other programs, 'a' appears without any trouble
-I tried with other users in my computer but the matter is still the same no matter wich user I use.
-I tried to change fonts of my environment and I also tried to change fonts only for the terminal but whithout success.
-I tried to change the layout of my keyboard.
At the RHEL prompt, I entered the standard user's username/password combo. Linux displays a message box stating:"Your account has expired; please contact your system administrator."Next, I entered "root" in the username field and entered the root password (which expired also--keep in mind that passwords are set to expire after x days). Linux displays a message box stating:"You are required to change your password immediately (password aged)."When prompted to "Enter current UNIX password", I entered the new password (was that the right thing to do?); Linux displays a message box stating:"The change of the authentication token failed. Please try again later or contact the system administrator."I rebooted the system and got into command line mode; somehow I logged in as "root" (don't know exactly how, but needed to change the password there). A dull black screen is presented (I don't know if that's normal; I expected a pleasant splash screen haha). As a windows user, I can only explain it as looking like a command prompt. The first line asks me for my login (which is my first name). I type it in, press enter, and then it asks me for my password. The problem is, no matter what I press, nothing happens after that.

I formatted my hard drive and erased Windows XP and tried to do the manual partitioning but don't have enough knowledge so picked the guided tour. Everything seemed to install but when I restarted it comes to "computer log-in" and wants a user name and password. I put in the user name I chose during installation and tried to put in the password but it wouldn'd type in - it also seemed to want a name for "computer." Does anyone know where I went wrong? I've been struggling to learn computer stuff on my own.

1. My laptop automatically get logged in without asking user name and password.
2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.
2. I can perform administrator task using only OEM user which is default inbuilt user of mint.
How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?
