Ubuntu :: I/O Frenzy On Wakeup From Suspend
May 17, 2010When I suspend the computer it is more or less idle. When waking up, the harddrive is maxed out with i/o activity. The drive led is more or less fully on. I am not able to log in to gnome. I can however switch to VT1 and log in there, although it takes ages.
top shows no process activity, but IO Wait is at about 87%. df -h reports several GB free. free -m shows there is over 2GB free RAM.
I installed iotop, which took about two hours. I have attached it's output as it's rather special. In short just about every app is reading as much as it can from disk, including iotop itself!
As seen in the log throughput is not very high, but the disk i/o still puts the system to a crawl.
I killed process after process until it suddenly stopped. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to when, but the i/o hammering stopped when killing one of the following (incomplete process names):
PC specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64
Acer aspire 5740, 4GB RAM, Intel Core i530 dualcore. AMD mobility radeon 5650 1GB.
I use fglrx and compiz is enabled with 'normal' profile.

After wakeup from pm-suspend server/HTPC is ready to use in 1 or 2 seconds .For example if I suspend it while watching movie in KODI, after resume movie starts playing instantly. But some services (SSH and SAMBA) are not running. I thought it was network problem so I change configuration to static (not DHCP). SAMBA and SSH starts like 15 seconds after wakeup.

Apr 22, 2011I used k3b to write a music CD on my Asus laptop. I then put it back in the drive, and Kubuntu told me that it was blank. Yet when I brought it over to a different machine, or to a non-computer CD player, it played correctly. The files on the CD are WAV, not MP3.
I've heard of problems where you write a CD in one machine and then can't read it in a different machine, but this is the other way around! The originating machine can't read it but the foreign machines can. I don't understand that at all.
The default writing speed is 24X. I tried lowering it to 16X, but that had no effect.

Suddenly (after using this keyboard for 6 months), some randomly times I need to press the button 6-7 times before something appears on screen. This happens randomly, I may be able to type a whole paragraph without problem, and suddenly I can't type anymore for few seconds. My system is opensuse 11.3 and it happened last friday 9/10 ( if it is related to any update). I tested the keyboard to another pc and it is working. I tested another keyboard to my laptop and I still have the same problem.

Oct 24, 2010Not sure if anyone uses floppy drives anymore much. I know that most machines don't come with them anymore unless you ask for one.One of my machines [Machine # 2] has a floppy and I have never had the occaision to use it under linux [opensuse 11.2 currently]. Until now that is! I have about 30 floppies that I need to transfer the data from. I am able to mount the floppy drive and take data off the currently inserted floppy, but if I want to insert another floppy and remove the data from it, I must unmount and remount the floppy everytime. There is an entry in fstab:
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
and a mount point in media [/media/floppy] Is there something else I need to have in the fstab line for the floppy so that it will read automatically everytime I insert a disk?

Aug 18, 2009I'm running off the most current kernel for Fedora 11 x64 and all packages are upgraded. I didn't hit the suspend button at any time but it went down to disk (black screen, soft yellow power light) and the lid had to be opened again for things to work properly.

I installed openSUSE 11.2 on another computer to confirm the problem... it persists. I took some screenshots to compare my settings.

The second screenshot doesn't show, but both settings are using the exact same fonts and the same size. (Except the Window title font). Oct 25, 2010This is a new issue since 10.04 (9.10 did it right). I'm on 10.10 netbook right now. What I would like to figure out is how to tell the system to go into suspend when idle even though the lid is open. I don't know if this problem is hardware specific or just a config file edit. Just to get it out of the way, it does suspend correctly when the lid is closed - and I can tell it to suspend when the lid is open, but what I need is for it to suspend when I fall asleep working or forget I left it open without overheating / running out of battery and losing my work. I'm pretty good at doing things on linux, despite the fact that I'm running the netbook remix, so don't be afraid to tell me to open a file in the terminal or whatever.

Feb 14, 2011Above adapter can be installed on v10.2 and 11.3 using ndiswrapper:-
1. Copy the 3 driver files from Windows:- like netwpn111.inf, WPN111.sys & ar5523.bin.
(Be carfeul about the exact names, because they have changed over time).
2. sudo ndiswrapper -i netwpn111.inf
3. sudo ndiswrapper -m
4. sudo modprobe ndiswrapper (the adapter should light up at this point and networks will be detected shortly after - see network manager). (Be careful of paths here - e.g. I had to use /sbin/modprobe - so 'whereis' may be necessary to find these commands).
2nd When I reboot, I need to run the modprobe command again. How do I make the module load automatically on boot? Also (and this is minor), can I bypass the KWallet, keyring thing? it seems silly to enter a password for the keyring and then click another password dialog, when I can just as easily enter the password for the network itself.

By and large, the device works wonderfully - with one minor (but annoying) quirk: almost every time the computer reawakens from suspend mode with the device plugged in, something in the OS automatically mutes all sound coming from that device. Note that Ubuntu does NOT restore control to my on-board sound chip - so whenever this happens, I'm left with a machine that's basically universally muted, for no good reason. Of course, I can just go into the volume control panel and unmute the external card - but I'm getting a bit tired of having to do this each time I turn on the machine.
Anybody have any ideas as to how I can force Ubuntu to NOT mute the external card?

Jan 26, 2010How do I automatically forward mail to a different user on a different machine in my LAN? I have been beating my head for several hours trying to accomplish this. I have sendmail configured as an MTA solely to receive system mail from daemons. For my personal mail I just use KMail and POP. I want all mail on any system in my LAN to forward mail to my office system, where my normal account can receive the messages. Although my office machine is powered on the most often, the box is not available 24/7.
So any other system that can't immediately forward mail should keep that mail queued as long as necessary. I have no problem forwarding root's mail on each local machine to a local user account on that same machine. I have been able to forward the mails but not the way I want. The mails get forwarded to the local /var/mail/me location rather than into the remote office machine /var/mail/me. Adding another alias in the local /etc/mail/aliases has no effect.
Creating ~/.forward in the local user's home directory also has no effect. Both efforts always result in the mails being forwarded to the local location rather than remote. I can send user-to-user email to and from any machine on my LAN. There are no network problems between any machine. Basic forwarding does work, just not to a remote machine at a different account. I won't pretend to know much about mail systems, let alone sendmail.

The point is that most students have no experience with Linux, that's why I need to load the Virtual machine automatically at login and in full-screen view so that The startup process ends up in Microsoft OS through the virtual machine (VMWare based) in Linux platform.
update : I'm using Fedora13 Linux distribution. I believe that part of launching the VM in full-screen is more difficult than automatically launching VMWare at startup. Is there some way I can tell VMWare to launch a particular virtual machine in full-screen when it starts on boot?

Apr 18, 2011I have followed this guide [URL] to setup a diskless cluster based on ubuntu server. Every thing is fine in the boot process except this:
After the client boots vmlinuz and init.rd, I see some information and after a minute I see:

IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up
/init: .: line 3: can't open /tmp/net-eth0.conf
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
It is strange since it gets an ip address when it want to boot. I don't know what is wrong with it.
