Fedora Networking :: Modify The Script To Allow Non-root Users Similar Features?
Mar 28, 2011I spent some time programming a useful script which presents the user with a UI of all the samba/W2K8 servers and shares on the domain and they check off the shares and the script maps them. The script can only be run as root because mount doesn't allow users to execute. I was asked to modify the script to allow non-root users similar features. I was able to get this working by running the commands:

# chmod +s /sbin/umount.cifs
Can someone please explain to me what the 's' option means? The man pages only go as far as to say that it allows for setting suid but I don't really know understand that means or what the implications are by doing this. In a perfect world I would like to create a security group and add users into that group and then grant that group permission to run mount.cifs/umount.cifs rather than making such a drastic global change to a core binary. how I might go about granting members of a group permission to run hand-selected commands like mount.cifs?
Post added at 07:07 PM Previous post was at 04:40 PM Ok, I read up on the /etc/sudoers man page and I think I have a more elegant solution to this problem of user mountable samba shares. I restored my mount.cifs back (chmod -s /sbin/mount.cifs) and I used visudo to grant the access.

%smbusers ALL=NOPASSWD:NOEXEC:/sbin/mount.cifs,/sbin/umount.cifs
This allows any users in the smbusers group to run mount.cifs/umount.cifs with sudo but without being prompted for a password.

Nov 8, 2010Have a strange problem with the network icon on my laptop.
I have two users (me & my wife). We often log in and use switch users so we're both logged in at the same time.
Whoever logs in first will get the network manager icon in the top panel, and whoever logs in second won't get the icon.
The second user does get a message (growl notification?) saying the wireless network <whatever> is now connected & it is indeed connected.
It's a bit annoying, as if I log in second, I can't chnage my wireless network to the other one we have, I'm stuck using whichever one my wife selected.

Oct 12, 2010Someone on the forums had me uninstall pulseaudio to get pSX working, and now I don't have a volume control icon on the panel and when choosing to add stuff to the panel it isn't available.I re-installed pulseaudio through the package manager, but I have a feeling it didn't install everything that uninstalled with it.

Mar 4, 2011I have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. When clicked on, it now appears in the middle of the screen (sometimes even higher depending on resolution). This never happened prior to Maverick Meerkat.
How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

Ubuntu :: After Adding 'killall Gnome-panel' To The Startup Applications Does The Panel Fail To Load Altogether
Dec 4, 2010Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

Mar 23, 2010I'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:
HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050
When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.
I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.

Sep 25, 2010So I take a glance at the time, and realize the clock has been showing the same hour for ages.Basically, if I use the gnome-panel menu for launching empathy the panel freezes. The workaround that I use is switching off showing seconds and switching it on again on the date format menu of the panel. (I never used seconds on the date format, but that way you realize the panel is frozen)I've seen this behaviour in two diferent computers I use, any hint on what may cause this? Every applet keeps working as usual, but the menu display is frozen.I'm on 10.04, using version 2.30.2 of gnome. Steps to reproduce: click on the envelope icon of the menu and launch xat. It only happens the first time (when empathy is loaded) and it gets solved if you start empathy through sessions or whatever (The problem with the sessions workaround is that I can't manage to make it started without focus).

May 17, 2011So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

Sep 29, 2010Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password.What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.

Jul 11, 2009I work as an system administrator for AIX and Linux servers. We have an FTP server running in Linux which has shared folders to Windows domain using Samba. The new requirement is to map users created to Linux machine to Windows users in such a way that, when a user logins into Windows machine with an ID say "X123" in domain "TEST", his access control to the samba shares should reflect based on the same user ID created in Linux machine.(FYI. Both the Windows and LINUX machines are in same network and domain). Please let me know the step by step procedure to configure Linux machine (smb.conf entries or any new file to be created for user mapping) to identify Windows user Login and provide access restrictions accordingly.
