Ubuntu :: Maverick - Get Sound Out Of Tvtime Time In 10.10?
Oct 18, 2010
How to get sound out of tvtime time in ubuntu 10.10? If so have you also been able to get the internal volume control to work. I just amazed that ubuntu devs would just shut off this functionality that affects much more the just tvtime and not offer a viable alternative. Is there an alternative? I haven't been able to find after a week or so of googling.
I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. The issue that I'm having is that I have 4 devices that show up as /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1,/dev/mixer2 and /dev/mixer3. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.
whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.
When I run tvtime with the desktop effects enabled Xorg, compiz and tvtime use a lot of cpu. It's even worse with tvtime in full screen. This doesn't happen with the desktop effects off or when I use vlc for example. The system is a 3GHz P4 Prescott, 1.7GB Ram, Nvidia FX5500. I'm running 11.3 with the nvidia video driver (173.14.27).
I have a TV Card from K-World. So i searched many applications for TV featuring MythTV , Zapping but they did not show any video/sound. I Found TVTime and it was okay , but it didn't show sound.
I have winfast tv200 expert tv-tuner. I am using TvTime to watch tv through it. verything is working fine except that sound continues to come even after i quit tvtime. is there any solution for it?
I have an issue with TVTIME's sound, its scratchy , the sound isn't clear. i can hear the sound & even understand, but there is a scratchy noise along with it,I didn't used to get it in ubuntu9.10 & 9.04,i don't have any issues with windows xp even, the tv tuner card is pinnacle PCTV version 5.
INTEL PENTIUM DUAL CORE 2.5GHz,(1GB)EACH 2 RAMS,ASUS INTEL G31 CHIPSET MOTHERBOARD, I have dual boot with WIN XP on another hard drive, xp doesn't give me problems regarding the TV tuner card, i have used UBUNTU 9.04 & 9.10 , they never gave me problems. I switched to openSUSE 11.2 because the internet used to be slow on UBUNTU 9.10. INTERNET on openSUSE 11.2 is working like wonders for me as i use 3G internet from a NOKIA N73 MOBILE.ubuntu was was a touch slower on the internet side. i don't want to shift back to ubuntu ,UBUNTU 10.04 release is just 9 days away. FYI - xine, amarok, vlc, mplayer, smplayer all work fine without any issues,
I used to watch and record TV in Vista and Win7 with a SAA7134 capture card, and all worked fine. Using TVTime in Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (no upgrade but fresh install, everything up-to-date), I get picture but no sound. Instead I get this error message when running TVTime from the terminal: Can't open device /dev/mixer, mixer volume and mute unavailable.Using lspci in terminal lists the card as following:
Code: 02:01.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder (rev d1) And dmesg outputs this:

Being rather new to Linux (oh great, another newbie ) I don't know what additional info you might need, but I'm more than happy to post everything neededd - provided you tell me how to get that info.
I recently updated my Lucid to Maverick. I am running ubuntu on Lenovo Thinkpad w500. I am facing problems with day light savings. I changed couple times to reflect the correct time. Inspite of my correction, it is still displaying wrong time. Attached is the image of my error.
I have a USB headset and coudn't get any sound. I had googled all around and had it working after setting the asound.conf file, but the following day when the system restarts it stoped bring sound. I have installing different packages (puse audio, padevchooser, pavucontrol, and asoundconf-gtk). The output of lsusb is the following:
[Code]...
what must i do. There is no sound in VLC or on firefox. I have already flash installed. I spent two days figuring out what I can do.
Any sound playing through pulseaudio is distorted for the first half-second or so. Sounds like a buzzing or crackling or something. This happens, for example, in Pidgin and Clementine (music player). If I set these programs to output through alsa instead of pulseaudio, there's no such problem. Also no such problem existed in 10.04. And I tried the fix in the sticky, nothing changed. Probably less than a half second of distortion, really. Maybe 100ms.
I recently upgraded an ASUS netbook through a series of about 4 or so upgrades ending at Maverick (10.10). Sound in Java applets worked fine before that, but I've been trying for about a week now to get it working again.
Here is what I have tried so far: Removed Sun Java and plugin, and installed Openjdk and icedtea Removed Openjdk and icedtea, and installed Sun Java and plugin Verified through aboutlugins that FireFox plugin matched installed Java plugin Tried using padsp and aoss wrappers
Along the way I have also tried other suggestions I have found through Google for configuring sound and setting file permissions, but nothing works. No matter what I do, sound keeps working everywhere except in Java applets.
Here are some observations along the way.
Sound has worked everywhere I try except in Java applets. It works with Flash.
Java applets work fine except for sound. Java console indicates that sound files are being received and passed to applets.
My Java executable is located at /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java. I have tried renaming it "java.real" and creating a shell script that wraps it with padsp or aoss. When I do that Java works, but Java applets fail to start. The Java console does not start up, so the wrappers appear to prevent applets from starting.
I am trying to run applets at [url]. They work fine for me on a 64-bit 10.04 system and a 32-bit 10.04 system.
I fresh installed Maverick and had sound for buttons and Rythymbox. After installing flash all sound is gone.I have checked most of the suggested possible causes but have not come up with the reason for this. ALSA info: [URL]

I'm having problems with my ubuntu 10.10 .That's the story..... I've installed a fresh copy of 10.10 from the website of ubuntu, the desktop verison ,32bit , for my medion WIM2160 . So , i don't have any problems with media, wifi or web browsers , but the only problem is that i don't have sound from my internal speakers on my laptop, although i have sound with my headphones (logitech).I will upload the output info from my terminal
I installed Maverick on my 27 inch iMac (core2 Duo 3 Ghz). I weas able to get the sound working through the headphonejack but not the internal speakers. I tried both alsamixer, and pulseaudio cvolume control, but neither solved my problem .
I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) on my new laptop. Sound was working just fine until today morning, when all of a sudden no sound would come out of my system. It is not a hardware problem as sound is working fine on windows.
I recently upgraded from Lucid Lynx to Maverick Meerkat and my OpenOffice.org Impress presentations' sound is not working. I don't have any issues affecting sound in other applications.
Fresh install Ububtu 10.10 x64. User1: Notification area shows network icon but no sound icon User2: Notification area shows sound icon but no network icon
Removing the Notification area from panel and add it back doesn't solve the problem. Is there any settings to tell what to put in the notification area?
I have made a custom kernel a few weeks ago, and just today the sound on everything isn't working. Upgraded alsa to 1.0.24 to try to fix and nothing... What do I need to do?
I'm running Maverick on an HP dv6 laptop. I tried recording a video via VLC with the machine's 'TrueVision' webcam. The result seemed to lack audio, so I had a look in preferences > sound. The input tab had the mute button ticked, so I unticked it and tried adjusting the level (while realising I was probably just configuring the mic port and not the webcam's inbuilt mics).
Then things turned bad: pointer became sluggish, and changes I made to the level slider took ages to be reflected visually on screen. I queued up a pile of clicks on the 'close' button and went away for a while. On return, I was met with a box inviting me to stop a script with some screen-width-long incomprehensible name, which of course I did.
Now the system's in a state which sees windows missing title bars (tho' not menu bars) and (more problematically) the upper and lower bars on the desktop absent. I issued a hibernate command from the terminal in the hope that on waking the system would be 'fixed', but nothing changed. I tried alt-tabbing to access my open applications and close them gracefully but this command is ignored. I have 'zillions' of apps going with unsaved data and am not sure what to try next. I'd be happy just to be able to task switch to each open prog and exit it gracefully then restart. But my knowledge of the command line is such that your help is required =) .
How can I disable login sounds in maverick without completely disabling the ubuntu sound theme?I just want it to not make sounds on startuplogin but still make the ubuntu sounds when new mail is received, etc.
how to get the IR Remote working with TvTime application. I have installed lirc package from synaptic, but dont know how to configure it. IR sensor is connected to TV Card(in PCI slot).Does this needs to be detected first by Ubuntu.if yes, waht command to use to verify its detection?? The remote came with the TV Card(Philips saa7130 chipset)
I would like to try tvtime on my Dell PC, bu I do not understand how to use the encrypted signal from comcast cable. I realize I will need to purchase a tv capture card. What is the best one for a Intel Core I3? Is there a USB version that will work?My TV is hooked to a TIVO HD box that has a comcast cable card. Is the signal decrypted by the cable card and then is it just necessary to obtain the decrypted signal from the TIVO output?
I am using a Hauppauge HVR-950Q and have the device installed and setup in Linux. I cannot however watch over-the-air broadcasts. If I reboot to Windows, I can watch tv (about 15 - 20 stations).I am using tvtime and get 'No Signal'.The device node /dev/video0 is created, what else am I missing?
Its unbelivable how crappy Sound in Ubuntu is - i am suffering from this since karmic. Whenever a second appication like Firefox plys a tune my sound in Amarok dies. Even windows 3.1 was able to do this kind of Multitasking and afaik this also was possible WITHOUT this Pulseaudio desaster.
This is my config
aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog] Subdevices: 1/2 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Subdevice #1: subdevice #1 card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: VT1708S Digital [VT1708S Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 (1)ch90045@cyclops:$~/cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.
This sound desaster makes me really think of buying a windows 7 license.
