Ubuntu Multimedia :: Tvtime On PC Using Comcast Cable?
May 3, 2011
I would like to try tvtime on my Dell PC, bu I do not understand how to use the encrypted signal from comcast cable. I realize I will need to purchase a tv capture card. What is the best one for a Intel Core I3? Is there a USB version that will work?My TV is hooked to a TIVO HD box that has a comcast cable card. Is the signal decrypted by the cable card and then is it just necessary to obtain the decrypted signal from the TIVO output?
I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. The issue that I'm having is that I have 4 devices that show up as /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1,/dev/mixer2 and /dev/mixer3. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.
whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.
When I run tvtime with the desktop effects enabled Xorg, compiz and tvtime use a lot of cpu. It's even worse with tvtime in full screen. This doesn't happen with the desktop effects off or when I use vlc for example. The system is a 3GHz P4 Prescott, 1.7GB Ram, Nvidia FX5500. I'm running 11.3 with the nvidia video driver (173.14.27).
I have been trying to get tvtime or any tv package to work with my Pinnacle PCTV HD usb but I have not had success. I have correctly installed every driver imaginable. So, here is what it what it comes down to: When I open tvtime it says "cannot open capture device /dev/video0" and the screen is blue. But my usb PCTV HD stick is NOT /dev/video0 so the question is how can I get tvtime to look for the usb tv tuner rather than video0?
After installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS over the weekend I had some problems, which I subsequently solved and thought I'd mention here. - First, the dreaded Low Graphics (EE)NOUVEAU(0):Error allocating scanout buffer:-12 which wouldn't allow me to change my monitor resolution. - Second, TVTime television viewer would not launch at all.
Solution to BOTH of these problems: From Synaptic uninstall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (experimental) and reinstall xserver-xorg-video-nv. Now everything works!
I have winfast tv200 expert tv-tuner. I am using TvTime to watch tv through it. verything is working fine except that sound continues to come even after i quit tvtime. is there any solution for it?
Tvtime built in volume control stopped working in maverick because it depends on kernel support of Open Sound System (oss) and ubuntu kernels are no longer compiled with this turned on.
You can get an experimental deb of tvtime for maverick here:[URL]
which will work with ALSA sound system.
Here is a partial solution I found on the Russian Ubuntu board by Alexandris if you cannot get the above deb to work for you:
tvtime configuration file at /etc/tvtime/tvtime.xml will allow you to reassign the left and right arrow keys to control whole system volume level while tvtime is running.
Make the following changes in tvtime.xml:
1. comment out existing left and right keybindings by enclosingg them with '<!--', '-->' tags:
3. save changes to tvtime.xml and start tvtime in a terminal window and see if there is any error messages. The Russian Ubuntu board recommended using "amixer -c default" , but I had to change mine to "amixer -c 0" (the number of my sound card) to get things to work. You might have to do the same...
I have been using Tvtime for several years and never had trouble with the video until now. Now it opens, but it's frozen. There is no picture and no sound, just a black screen that I can't control in any way. Even to close it, I have to go through the terminal.I can still get channels using Mplayer, so the tuner should not be the problem. However, t is an Hauppauge 950.I was using Lucid on both partitions. Initially, one quit, but not the other. About a month later the other quit while I was watching which makes me think it may be something I have simply hit on the keyboard. I have since upgraded to Maverick on one and reinstalled Tvtime to no avail
I have an issue with TVTIME's sound, its scratchy , the sound isn't clear. i can hear the sound & even understand, but there is a scratchy noise along with it,I didn't used to get it in ubuntu9.10 & 9.04,i don't have any issues with windows xp even, the tv tuner card is pinnacle PCTV version 5.
INTEL PENTIUM DUAL CORE 2.5GHz,(1GB)EACH 2 RAMS,ASUS INTEL G31 CHIPSET MOTHERBOARD, I have dual boot with WIN XP on another hard drive, xp doesn't give me problems regarding the TV tuner card, i have used UBUNTU 9.04 & 9.10 , they never gave me problems. I switched to openSUSE 11.2 because the internet used to be slow on UBUNTU 9.10. INTERNET on openSUSE 11.2 is working like wonders for me as i use 3G internet from a NOKIA N73 MOBILE.ubuntu was was a touch slower on the internet side. i don't want to shift back to ubuntu ,UBUNTU 10.04 release is just 9 days away. FYI - xine, amarok, vlc, mplayer, smplayer all work fine without any issues,
I have installed Tvtime and XawTv applications and I am currently trying to configure both these applications to detect my tv tuner card (pixelview play tv pro with conexant cx2388 chipset). configure both video and audio with channel scan for my tv tuner card?
I used to watch and record TV in Vista and Win7 with a SAA7134 capture card, and all worked fine. Using TVTime in Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (no upgrade but fresh install, everything up-to-date), I get picture but no sound. Instead I get this error message when running TVTime from the terminal: Can't open device /dev/mixer, mixer volume and mute unavailable.Using lspci in terminal lists the card as following:
Code: 02:01.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder (rev d1) And dmesg outputs this:
Code: [ 16.078404] saa7130/34: v4l2 driver version 0.2.16 loaded [ 16.078458] alloc irq_desc for 17 on node -1 [ 16.078460] alloc kstat_irqs on node -1[code]....
Being rather new to Linux (oh great, another newbie ) I don't know what additional info you might need, but I'm more than happy to post everything neededd - provided you tell me how to get that info.
how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:
Three Ethernet Cables Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables The Two Computers A 2GB Flash Drive
That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.
This is my first Ubuntu installation, and I sure like its efficiency and speed.
But I can't get access to my Comcast email no matter what I try. I've spent 3 days on this, reading everything I can find, trying all kinds of "solutions," all to no avail.
Comcast email doesn't work, either through Smartzone webmail, or using an email program like Thunderbird or Evolution. All other email (Yahoo, Google) works fine. But not Comcast.
I have managed to get Thunderbird to send emails, but neither it nor anything else receives emails. Using Thunderbird: when trying to login to receive emails with Thunderbird, I get "Host Contacted, sending login information" and then after an extended delay get an error message: "Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.comcast.net responded: invalid username/password".
However, my username and password that I'm entering are correct (they work with a Windows computer and Thunderbird Windows).
I've tried every combination of setup settings suggested by Comcast, and by others (there are lots of combinations), and nothing works.
With SmartZone, I get the login screen and can enter my username and password, but then the screen just freezes with a blank. I've tried clearing cache, cookies, you name it, and it still doesn't work.
I like to head to the local cafes here in Miami(Away from Suxbux). BUT all the cafe owners have comcast. I try to connect and I can't seem to get the IP Address. Yes, it hangs up.
so my Evolution worked fine. I was able to send and receive messages. THen I switched my ISP from a local provider to Comcast. I did nothing to Evolution and now it won't send my emails. I still receive stuff fine. I am using GMail's SMTP server.
Karmic 9.10 Evolution 2.28.1 smtp.gmail.com
I don't see anyplace to include the port number like I could in Thunderbird so I have no idea what port I am using but the thing that is curious is that it doesn't work on Comcast when it did on both my local provider and Sprint's mobile broadband.
In Firefox, I get the message "Your operating system is not supported by Comcast's installation Wizard. Please call 1-800-COMCASt to setup your account." After I look it up, there is not support at all from comcast Now I have a feeling all I have to do is enter a free dns server into my configuration.I'm using WIFI.. (because I'm not wired)
I've been fighting with my atheros AR5007 network adapter to configure it on my qwest network and its not working! It hooks up to my friends comcast wifi!
Can Cat5e RJ45 connector crimper be used for Cat 6 connector because I heard cat 6 connector is different from cat 5e connector and also same question for cable tester can cat5e cable tester be used for cat 6 cable?
I just purchased a "VGA Adapter to TV S-Video RCA Out Cable for PC Video" but it isn't working. How do i get my VGA card to support direct tv out through a RCA cable?
1) My Internet connection is COMCAST with a router box and one public IP address.2) My web server is Apache using 10.1.10.200 as its address.3) Now I want to add another host name (www.myhealth.com) on my server. I did DNS forwardin (with Godaddy) to my COMCAST static IP address.4) I also added (in my httpd.conf) a block for virtual hosting
I am running 11.04 on a new Gateway with 8 gigs of ram. It is a solo installation. The monitor is connected via an HDMI cable. Everything was great (installation running smoothly for over a month) until last night. I just installed a netgear router and was setting it up with the system to try to get Stanza on my IPAD to connect to Calibre. Anyway, i suffered a severe freeze up warranting a hard boot. I could see the drive working, ancillary drives lit up, keyboard lit up so I know the system is working. The monitor did not come on, It shows a yellow light indication no signal. It is a 28" Hansspree. I tested the monitor by hooking it to a laptop. The monitor is fine. I cannot see anything on the screen so I can't boot to repair mode or use a CD. There is no signal.
I am trying to get my tevii650 usb DVB-S2 tuner working. I seem to have installed all the correct drivers as far as I can tell.
When I scan for services and then use femon to look at the signal strength femon -H, I get a signal of around 83% with 0 SNR and BER. Then if I remove the feed the signal goes UP to 97% 0SNR and BER.
I am trying to monitor signal the signal level coming down from the satellite. I don't even want to be able to tune to any of the channels. Basically I want to use the PC as a glorified signal meter and datalogger.
I have a Dell Inspirion 5150. The onboard sound card was blown 3 years ago. OS is Ubuntu 8.10. I am also a HAM radio operator and use the computer for digital modes using a USB device that acts as an external sound card modem for me.
The program that I use for that is fldigi. The device is Signalink USB by Tigertronics. the device has the ability to have speakers plugged in to it. Question: Is there a way to have the computer send the audio out the USB cable to the device?
I have looked at my sound settings and there are USB devices but none of them are the one(s) that I use with my Signalink device. If it can't be done, no worries -- have not really needed it so far. Just something nice to have.
I can't get a certain harddrive out of its mounting (screws too tight) , but I want it connected to a different computer. Is it possible to have the harddrive's powercable connected to one computer, and its SATA cable connected to another computer's motherboard? (The powercable is too short to connect it to the other computer.)
