Ubuntu Multimedia :: Only One Program Can Use Sound At A Time?

View 2 RepliesIts unbelivable how crappy Sound in Ubuntu is - i am suffering from this since karmic. Whenever a second appication like Firefox plys a tune my sound in Amarok dies. Even windows 3.1 was able to do this kind of Multitasking and afaik this also was possible WITHOUT this Pulseaudio desaster.
This is my config

This sound desaster makes me really think of buying a windows 7 license.
i cannot play sound at same time... example i use twinkle and when i play music twinkle error occur:
Critical: Cannot open ALSA driver for PCM playback: Device or resource busy
what can i do ?
Anyone here have a good solution for individually controlling sound output without relying on that individual programs audio settings? For example:I am writing a paper while listening to some nice creative commons jamendo music, and I have to look something up online - I don't want to hear random audio/video advertisements.
or I get a VoIP call and I want that program to continue with sound, but want to mute my 8bit sequencer and whatever else.
Is there any program like virtual dj 7?
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently installed 11.2x64 with KDE4.
Everything is working great (excellent release!) with the exception of sound.
The sound works well when only one app needs it, but sound only works for one app. If another program is open, it has no sound.
Some examples: - If I am listening to an .mp3 with VLC, I don't get sound in a movie in SMplayer.
- If I have a tab open in firefox with a flash movie (like .....), any other firefox tab will have no sound.
The worst part is that if I have virtualbox open, no other applications have any sound as long as it is open.
When I start Audacious and make it play music, after a random time the player
freezes up and the music stops playing. I have to make Audacious force quit and restart it, then it works for some time again. When I play a ..... video (in Firefox), it plays fine for some time and then it loses sound and either continues playing silent or the video stops and doesn't start again until I reload the page.
I use kernel 2.6.31-11-rt and the soundcard is...
product: AC'97 Sound Controller
vendor: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]
physical id: 2.7

with my motherboard the onboard back sound jack's audio is VERY quiet, but the front jacks wired into HD audio work fine. (I'm building an htpc, btw.)
I tried for weeks to get it to work, but eventually I just pulled a cheap Dynex DX-SC51 card from another machine and turns out it works, but now I can't use the inputs and headphone jack on the front of the case without going into system>preferences>sound and changing "output" back to "internal analog audio stereo"
Is there any way to activate these two audio devices at the same time?
I have a problem with my 64-bit version of Debian Linux Lenny. I have to run alsaconf every time I boot into the machine. I have tried to run this command followed by alsaclt store. It was no help, I still have to run the command every time to get sound, which makes it very annoying. Anybody know what configuration file I should be looking at, and what I should be changing. If you need a print out of any of my configuration files, just let me know what they are and where they are and I will post them. The sound was working fine for the longest time before, I think the whole mess started when installed KDE, E16, XFCE etc. I was trying out these new windows managers and seeing if I would like them. I don't really like them all that much as the gnome so I removed them.
View 6 Replies View RelatedCan someone recommend a good app to monitor the OUTPUT of my soundcard? I don't just want to look at the VU meter of my music player - i actually want to see what the soundcard is outputting. Windows drivers for my soundcard (Audiophile 192) had this ability, but I'm not sure what software to use in Linux.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm just wondering what the limits for time are. I have a program that always takes exactly 20 ms, so I assume this is the lowest it can measure, but I want to see if there's some sort of documentation of this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to record an internet radio station starting at 2:00am tomorrow morning. The specific program on the radio station lasts until 6:00am. The command I need to run to record the station is: Code:mplayer http://wjcu.jcu.edu:8001/listen.pls -ao pcm:file=indie_heat_of_the_night.wav -vc dummy -vo nullI'd use cron, but 1. I'm not sure how to and 2. it seems unnecessarily complicated for something that I only want to run once. If cron is the only/easiest solution, I guess I'll just have to resort to that, but I'd rather not.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am looking for a very particular sound wave simulation program. To get an understanding of what i want let me describe it to you in a different way.
Imagine your look at a bowl of water from above and you poke the water at a specific frequency you will see wave patterns showing. Well im after a program that can generate that pattern with any particular frequency that i set, and to allow me to place different shapes and objects around the sound source or sources (i may want to use more than one sound source that may or may not be at the same frequency as first.) and see what kind of reflections i get.
I was also wondering if instead of a point sound source you could have an entire shape giving off a specific vibration. This will give very interesting results that i am also after.
There are some programs that show sound simulations that i have described but nothing that can do the requirements that i desire. Do any of you guys know of any programs that can do this? if not how much would it cost to build such a program?
I have some questions.First, how can i obtain a process execution time ( after it terminated)??? Second, in a multi-core system like SMP how can i run different processes on different cores explicitly? i.e. how can i assign a process to a specific core?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to find out the processing or operating time in milliseconds or in nanoseconds for the instructions or for the whole process!
for eg :
I need to calculate the time taken to execute :
And i dont want the time for whole program :
I need to write a program for time. like i have 2 tasks both minutes and hours.
like this
1st task=5 hours and 30 minutes
2nd task=2hours and 45 minutes
Together they will take 8 hours and 15 minutes.
I need to write a program thats called ADDTIMES to do something like this.
This is what i have so far.
H1=int(input("enter the number of hours:")) etc..
I have a script I would like to have automatically invoked every time the screen is unlocked. Does Ubuntu provide some support for users who wish to do this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI do this every time.
Code:
ifup dsl0
How can i set this to start at boot time?
I've done a lot of googling for this, but always found code that does not work on my compiler.Could anyone please post a small (working) program through which I can store the starting time of the program (milliseconds) and get the ending time of the program in integer variables?Am working on Fedora 8, and with the gcc compiler.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have made a vb6 porgram, it is running without any error in windows platform. However, i want it to be run at Fedora too. I run my program with Wine Windows Program Loader in a Linux pc, but the program stuck with an error message:
Run-time error '429':
ActiveX component can't create object
I thought it was the error message because of missing some dll/reference files, so I tried to copy all those related .dll & .ocx file into my wine file. (Just copy and paste into the system32 of wine, no regsvr32 statement to register the .dll as what we always do in Windows.) However, all my efforts are in vain. I not sure what is the cause of this error.
im trying to calculate how much time does my program run, use very simple script
clock_t end, start;
start= clock();
int i;
printf("initial %d
",(int)start);

but it outputs 0 all the time. cant figure out where could be the problem.
i have the example code below, i want to calculate the time taken for a sample program to run. but i keep getting undefined reference error.
#include <sys/time.h>
#include <iostream>
int main(int argc, char **argv) {
struct timeval startTime;
struct timeval endTime;

I am making a program to do a breadth first search.The code which I am posting here just makes a que of the nodes visited in a binary tree in inorder fashion,so this implementation is not yet complete.While developing I got a segmentation fault which I was not able to understand why I am getting so I am posting since the tree of same program (without BFS) is working.
Code:
#include<stdio.h>
#include<stdlib.h>

I want to devolep one "C/C++" program that will work as a daemon. My daemon will be running all the time, and whenever anybody attaches removable devices to machine on which my daemon is running, My daemon should catch that event and also should show me where that device has been mounted.

I am having trouble with encryption/ decryption program. The program goes out and finds the file I want it to, encrypts it into a continuing series of a single repeated negative number, then generally decrypts(or should i say re-encrypts)it into a widely repeated character, different but same results every time.

i am graduate student and my X colleague gave me this Fortran 77 program to run my result files with. She is no longer reachable. I compiled the following program with gfortran, it compiled well but, when i run it, gave me end of file error. My output file (which is the input file for this program (DFILE1) ) has about 78,000 lines of velocities of atoms (Vx, Vy, Vz with 1000 steps.. an example of some of the atom's velocities in the 1st step is given at the end of this program). I will be highly obliged if any one can help me with this.I run this program on opensuse linux 11.3 version /32 bit/i586
