Ubuntu :: Making Extra Boot Log References?
Feb 3, 2011
I have 10.10 64-bit on a Fujitsu T900. the hard drive has windows seven as well (64-bit). The win7 is the orginal from the manufacture. the boot log originally had (in this order): Win7, Windows Vista (about 100 MB not sure why but can't remove), recovery partition. I put ubuntu on after those three. Some times when the computer goes into suspend mode from ubuntu it will not wake up after wards. the only option it to power i down manually. when it comes back up there is now a second reference to ubuntu in the boot log. this has happened several times. there are now four valid references to ubuntu in the boot loader. I need to remove three of them, but i'm concerned that removing them will compromise ubuntu. Also I'm not sure where the boo log in windows seven is.

I am running Fedora 14, which I installed from scratch in a new computer.ls -l /bootshows a subdirectory also called boot andls -l /boot/bootshows what appears to be a another copy ofgrubwhich is already in /boot.It is not a symbolic link. It shows 14 of the 17 files in the /boot/grub.All of these are identical to the same files in /boot/grubwith two exceptionsdevice.map in /boot/grub shows

there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

Im trying to get my extra media drives to auto mount at boot, having problems with it. Does this line look right?
/dev/sdb /media auto auto,user,noexec,rw,sync 0 2
The one thing I'm not sure about is the mount point, am I just putting '/media' or am I putting '/media/MKV' or whatever the name of the drive may be?

I used btrfs, but my Slackware root is really a subvolume named system and not the root of btrfs. I do a similar setup of having the OS's root in it's own filesystem on FreeBSD+ZFS.Anyways, my problem lies in mkinitrd. There's no way to enter extra boot options, as I require subvol=system to be added to mount -o ro -t $ROOTFS $ROOTDEV /mnt.in the init script of /boot/initrd.gz. I don't reboot often and it's easy to manually remount /mnt with the correct options, however, is there another way of passing boot options to mkinitrd?
I see Patrick is the author of mkinitrd, so maybe this kind of option could, or maybe should, be added? I'm sure most people wouldn't make a subvolume for the OS's root, but I've been use to it with ZFS and prefer it for some reason.

After upgrade from MDV 2009.1 to MDV 2010 a bunch of available kernels that can be selected are listed at boot. I think that these are still installed but I really don't need them listed. I would like to get rid of the list of extras. I've had a look at /boot/grub but I can't figure out what.

I have my pc setup with 2 hard disks, my main HD is running Win XP and the second HD is loaded with 9.1, the disk I loaded 9.1 on is a 40 gig HD, I wanted to try out 9.1 as a clean install before mucking around with dual boot. I really like 9.1 and now I want to change the way I am setup so I can run a dual boot. Right now the way it is I go through GRUB to choose either linux or win, it defaults to Linux, I removed the disk the 40 gig drive the other day and when I do I can't boot up, I get an error message telling me something like Grub not found (Duh right I took the HD out) I want to reset my comp so the 40 gig drive is visible to win and do the dual boot with 9.1 inside of windows.
My questions are this.
1. How would change the current boot config. so that windows loads and I don't have to use GRUB to choose my O/S.
2. How would I go about removing 9.1 from the 40 gig drive and leaving it blank so I can utilize it for windows.
my main concern here is getting the pc set back up so I can boot into windows without using the GRUB menu, I'm on my work pc and getting some greif from my boss on this. I'm worried that if I just remove 9.1 from the 40 gig drive that I won't be able to load windows, like when I physically removed the HD from the pc.

Basically, I just installed Ubuntu 10 on a laptop into a dm-crypt'ed logical volume. That seemed easy enough. Is there a good method for making a dual-boot installation with both Linux and Windows on fully-encrypted partitions/volumes?

A while back a disk error caused /var/lib/dpkg/status to go south - completely corrupted. I managed to rebuild it with the help of a script i found online, but now there's a package called libghc6-edison in limbo on my install. It has no sources, as it was custom built, and i cant seem to find the references to this thing. Apt cache shows that it exists, synaptic gives me an error in CLI every time i launch it referring to this package -Traceback (most recent call last):
I've tried grepping all the files in /var/lib/dpkg to no avail. Any ideas where else this information could be stored? i need to find all the references to the package and purge them. It seems to preven me from successfully pulling off a do-release-upgrade (in a VM for testing) as well as doing a remastersys dist (have to do remastersys backup instead).
The package was never available in Lucid, if i remember correctly, i had to compile it myself and debianize it, but i cant seem to find the sources on my build VM or anywhere in the installed end-product OS.

/etc is where your gnu/linux stores it's configuration. Its function is similar to the Windoze registry. As you install, uninstall, and work with various programs, /etc changes. Sometimes, things change that make your system act unexpectedly.
1) open a console
2) su enter root password
3) # mkdir /var/backup
4) # vim /usr/sbin/prep4change replace "vim" with text editor of your choice
5) cut and paste the following short script
[code]....
Next time you are about to install, remove, or change something, just issue prep4change as root. If the unthinkable ( but expected ) should happen, and things stop working correctly, you have your /etc and /boot already backed up. Your backup will be located in /var/backup You can also $ tail /var/backup/notes to see why you made what backup Again, this isn't the most elegant, but it's simple, and it works!

I'm writing a C program using WordNet, just a very basic one to test out if everything was working fine, but I'm getting undefined references. I linked to the library and compile with
Code:
gcc prog.c -L/usr/local/WordNet-3.0/lib/libWN.a -I/usr/local/WordNet-3.0/include/
This seems to be the only wordnet library to link to, but I'm still getting the error
Code:
/tmp/cc4C3I3S.o: In function 'main':
prog.c:(.text+0x21): undefined reference to 'is_defined'
prog.c:(.text+0x48): undefined reference to 'findtheinfo'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I feel it must be an error with the way I'm going about trying to link the files.

I am developing a system in Python that includes an engine and multiple front ends. I am doing the engine and a curses front end together and will add additional FE's later. My problem is that I don't know how to get my front end to import the modules from the engine. I have them set up in Eclipse (using Pydev) as separate projects, but in the same workspace.
I've been a developer for years, but this is my first Python project, and I'm also fairly new to Eclipse. I guess my question is, How do I set up the references to other projects of my own making?

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and trying to learn the new Unity environment. Bibus is a reference manager which I used with great pleasure for sometime. It was perfect in terms of inserting and formating references to openoffice-writer.Now, with 11.04 Unity environment Bibus can insert references to Libreoffice-writer but can not change reference styles. Once I log out and re-enter with ubuntu-classic environment I see that Bibus is working perfectly in Gnome desktop of 11.04.In the Unity desktop I have to run Bibus as root to change styles and change reference formats.Why Bibus can not change styles and format references in Unity environment unless having root privileges?

I have a RHEL4.8 machine, and I am trying to install the following libxml2-2.7.8 and libxslt-1.1.26 The OS installed versions are: libxml2-2.6.16-12.6 and libxslt-1.1.11-1.e14_7.2 I installed libxml2-2.7.8 and it appears to have installed successfully. However, when I attempt to build and install libxslt, it complains about some undefined references when linking to libxml2 which I believe are not in the old version (but do exist in the new one I installed). I am not able to erase the old versions and I am not able to update to the ones I want. I am at a dead-end at the moment and I am not sure how to proceed.

I am trying enter a VLOOKUP formula in Sheet1, where the array is in Sheet2. For both the items, I have used mouse to enter cell references, which I always do.
1. Search criterion has been entered as a range, which is different from previous versions and not a very comfortable situation.
2. array reference completely missed entering Sheet2! in front of A1:C13. Only way out of this is manually entering the sheet name, which is not only cumbersome but also ludicrous. Moreover, we never had to do it like this in the past. I am using OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 in Ubuntu 10.10.

I'm trying to math all class references in a C++ file using grep with regular expression. I'm trying to know if a specific include is usuless or not, so I have to know if there is a refence in cpp. I wrote this RE that searches for a reference from class ABCZ, but unfortunately it isn't working as I espected:
grep -E '^[^(/*)(//)].*[^a-zA-Z]ABCZ[]*[*(<:;,{& ]'
^[^(/*)(//)] don't math comments in the begging of the line ( // or /* )
.* followed by any character
[^a-zA-Z] do not accept any caracter before the one I'm searching (like defABCZ)
[]* any white space (I can have something like ABCZ var; )
[*(<:;,{& ] followed by ( * < : ; , & { (I cant get #define "ABCZ.h" or ABCZdef for example)
Well, I can get patterns like this:
class Test: public ABCZ{
class Test: public ABCZ {
class Test : public ABCZ<T>
[code].....
