General :: How To Delete Extra Kernel Lists At Boot Of MDV 2010
Feb 4, 2010
After upgrade from MDV 2009.1 to MDV 2010 a bunch of available kernels that can be selected are listed at boot. I think that these are still installed but I really don't need them listed. I would like to get rid of the list of extras. I've had a look at /boot/grub but I can't figure out what.

I want to ask a question regarding the terminal in ubuntu. When i deleted some lines in the config files for example, there will be those so-called extra spaces left after deleting and i can't seem to delete those spaces and 'pull' up the lines below. So, how to delete those extra spaces?

My Grub2 boot menu includes:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Q1) I only really need the latest kernel, 2.6.31-19, don't I?
Q2) So how can I get rid of the two 2.6.31-14 entries?

Yesterday i was prompted by my update manager to update some packages. I really don't remember which but i updated.
After reboot the box now kernel panics. I don't believe i get a ubuntu splash screen, and at this point i can't figure out how to get to my grub, in case a kernel was upgraded and it's possible to boot to different kernel.
i noticed some words like 'mantis', 'oops' and 'dvb_core' was a part of the text i get on the screen.
Can this be because of a dvb* upgrade that breaks something important ?
If needed, i should be able to boot via liveCD, or i could take a picture of the errors.

After new kernel update I noticed that I have 2 different versions of 1 kernel installed.
Kernels are:
2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i686.PAE (this one I use because previous kernels are all .PAE)
and
2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i586
Should I now expect any problems with later kernel releases or can I leave it this way? I boot in the .PAE kernel.

The new Mac Mini has just been refreshed. I'm thinking of getting one as a general admin machine, as they run very quietly. I'd like to able to dual boot it with Ubuntu 10.04 and I have a few questions. The hard-drive is 350gb. Would it be possible to dual boot with OSX on two fairly small partitions, say 50gb for each OS. Leaving a remaining partition of around 250gb to keep files on for both OSX and Ubuntu? I've read about this for windows/ubuntu dual boots, but can't seem to find much on OSX/Ubuntu dual boots and whether you can share files easily between them and having common drives for data storage. Also, general tips on dual booting a Mac Mini with Ubuntu 10.04 would be welcome (not a lot out there that I can find).

I'm using a dual boot system with Fedora and Windows XP. Until a few days ago i could boot in Windows or Linux choosing the option during boot. I have updated Fedora with common updates these days and now i can't boot in Windows anymore, because there are no entry for it anymore to the boot menu.
The graphical boot configuration tool (i'm using Gnome) only lists three different kernel for Fedora but any entry for a Windows partition. Here is how my disk appears:
I'd like to know why this occur and, mostly, which is the most easy way to restore the dual boot

My system had a dual boot with Karmic & Windows. On Saturday I installed Lucid. Now Grub sometimes shows a list with Lucid, Windows & Karmic. More often it shows the old bootlist with Karmic & Windows, so I cannot boot Lucid. I have been unable to detect any logic as to when it shows one list rather than the other. The machine is a Sony E series preinstalled with Windows 7. I was (& still often am !!!) using Karmic 64 bit.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! If I boot from the 10.04 live CD, all partitions on the hard drive are visible, mountable, and pass all file system checks.

I've been attempting to boot Ubuntu on my Mac Mini with absolutely no success. I tried 32-bit and 64-bit versions of 10.10 and 10.04. In all cases, I see the little keyboard and man at the bottom of the screen and then the screen goes black (i.e. my monitor stops receiving input).
My monitor is connect via the HDMI-to-DVI convertor, so is this a driver issue related to that?

I have used ubuntu for som years now, I thought It could be nice to try a kde focused linux distro, so I installed mandriva spring.
The problem is that only the ubuntu LTS boots, and the mandriva part just stops after (and I don't know where to start, and what is relevant to write)

I just purchased a new Mac Mini 2010 to replace my older Mac Mini 2006 Intel. The problem I am having is that when I boot Ubuntu from the MM 2010 CD-ROM the initial menu that allows you to select a language is displayed, but after that the screen goes blank and stays blank. I am using the HDMI port to DVI output and I am wonder if that could be a cause of the blank screen. Is there a boot command that I can use to allow Ubuntu to display with the HDMI port or other item I need to fix to get Ubuntu CD installer video display to work with my MM 2010?

there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

I have 10.10 64-bit on a Fujitsu T900. the hard drive has windows seven as well (64-bit). The win7 is the orginal from the manufacture. the boot log originally had (in this order): Win7, Windows Vista (about 100 MB not sure why but can't remove), recovery partition. I put ubuntu on after those three. Some times when the computer goes into suspend mode from ubuntu it will not wake up after wards. the only option it to power i down manually. when it comes back up there is now a second reference to ubuntu in the boot log. this has happened several times. there are now four valid references to ubuntu in the boot loader. I need to remove three of them, but i'm concerned that removing them will compromise ubuntu. Also I'm not sure where the boo log in windows seven is.

I used btrfs, but my Slackware root is really a subvolume named system and not the root of btrfs. I do a similar setup of having the OS's root in it's own filesystem on FreeBSD+ZFS.Anyways, my problem lies in mkinitrd. There's no way to enter extra boot options, as I require subvol=system to be added to mount -o ro -t $ROOTFS $ROOTDEV /mnt.in the init script of /boot/initrd.gz. I don't reboot often and it's easy to manually remount /mnt with the correct options, however, is there another way of passing boot options to mkinitrd?
I see Patrick is the author of mkinitrd, so maybe this kind of option could, or maybe should, be added? I'm sure most people wouldn't make a subvolume for the OS's root, but I've been use to it with ZFS and prefer it for some reason.

Im trying to get my extra media drives to auto mount at boot, having problems with it. Does this line look right?
/dev/sdb /media auto auto,user,noexec,rw,sync 0 2
The one thing I'm not sure about is the mount point, am I just putting '/media' or am I putting '/media/MKV' or whatever the name of the drive may be?

I got 'Mandriva 2010.2 One KDE Europe - Americas' live image with a tech magazine as an .iso. The live usb image created with Unetbootin on my Mint 10 of the iso won't boot. All I get a warning no operating system or something. I tried the Mandriva-seed script but it gives an error
Quote:
GLib-GIO:ERROR:/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.26.0/gio/gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Also tried the isotostick script too but it too won't work. Here is the error message
Quote:
Not verifying image...(no checkisomd5 in Ubuntu so skipping)!
./isotostick.sh: line 103: /lib/udev/vol_id: No such file or directory

Cleaning up to exit...
note that the file system of the usb drive is FAT32 and the md5sum of the iso is the same as that specified in the website !!
