Ubuntu Servers :: Add Users To Vsftpd Without Making Local Accounts?

Dec 3, 2010

I'm using vsftpd as my FTP server. I have set it up so I can access my home directory via FTP, requiring my login.

But I want to make a folder in my documents (or anywhere really), which only my colleague can access. But I don't want to make a local Ubuntu user account. He just needs to be able to send files to this folder, connecting remotely, using his own login details.

Software :: Setting Up "ftp Only" User Account With Vsftpd?

Jun 10, 2011

When setting up ftp users, is it possible with vsftp to allow a non-anonymous user ftp access, without them having a shell set? i.e. their shell is /bin/false (for security precautions), but vsftp's "local_enable" setting only allows ftp login from users in /etc/passwd that have a usable shell (/bin/sh, /bin/bash, etc). i'd like to set an account's shell to /bin/false but still be able to access ftp. so the account has ftp access but no ssh/shell access. Long story short, I want an account that has access to the ftp server and nothing else.

Networking :: Send Email To Mail Server / Account On Local Network?

Mar 4, 2011

I'm trying to configure postfix so smart daemon can send out notifications emails. My system will need to send emails to a mail server that is on the same local network. I have not had much luck in getting this to work, and am confused on what I need to setup to do this and how to set it up. Does my system need to be apart of the same domain as the mail server? If so, how do I do this? Is there any restrictions sending emails from the command line as the root user? Do I need to configure a relayhost?

Basically all I need to do is send emails to a local mail server, i.e. a mail server on the same local network. I do not need to receive emails. I am rather clueless as to how to set this all up, and what I need for this basic email functionality. I have read and tried many postfix configuration tutorials, but when I try to send out a test email to a email address on the local network mail server I always get "Connection refused" to the server and deferred or bounced status on my test email.

Dec 9, 2010

One of Konqueror's unique features is that i can name a local process as the action in a form. When i submit that form, the local process is executed. Very helpful for certain offline tasks. What would make it even better is if i could find a way to pass some data to that local process from the html page. This could be the content of a hidden input item, etc. Alternatively, if there is a way for Konqueror to create or update a local file with data from the html page, that would acheive the same end.

Ubuntu Networking :: Use Local IP Only On Local Network?

May 25, 2010

I've got an Ubuntu server hosting our websites and other various things here in our own home. We recently switched to a router that doesn't support loopback (abomination), so I've set up hosts files on our computers so we can access our own sites when on our home LAN.

However, we often take our laptops as we travel about, and I'm guessing due to the hosts files when we try to access our sites, it'll look on whatever local network we're connected to for our server, which won't work, obviously.

Is there a way to set up something like a hosts file that'll only try to look up the local IP of the server when we're on a specific network (our home one), or have one that tries to look for the local IP first, then proceeds to try and resolve the domain name and use the external IP if the local IP doesn't work?

Networking :: 3 Nics - Connect To Internet - Share To Local Net - And Connect To Local Net - Not Working

Sep 15, 2009

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1650 server with 3 NICs in it. I am trying to use one NIC (eth0) to connect to the internet, the second NIC (eth1) to share the internet connection to a LAN, and the third NIC (eth2) to connect to the LAN.

It is running Ubuntu server 8.10

The problem that I'm having is that NetworkManager (version 0.7.0) keeps setting eth2 as the default connection, and then I don't get any internet at all from the server.

My main goal is to be able to share files from the server to computers on the LAN. The secondary goal is to have a virtual machine hosting a Halo server, connected through eth2, so that it can host LAN games. But that is a secondary goal after I get the connections to work.

I've been looking around and finding other people who have done bits and pieces of this, but not the whole thing. I had been hoping to simply use the NetworkManger, but I don't mind editing config files.

Also I can't seem to find any good instructions on editing the /etc/network/interfaces file. The man file is incomplete, and everything seems to point back to the man file.

Ubuntu :: Can't Connect Via FTP (vsftpd)

May 17, 2011

I have installed vsftpd and I configured the whole package and everything worked. But, after a reboot, it doesn't work anymore. Vsftpd is running. When I do "telnet localhost 21" the machine gets connected to localhost. It also succeeds when I type "192.168.2.10" (my internet IP address) or "86.80.107.30" (external IP address). So the connection is fine. I configured vsftpd to allow only given users, in this case the user bourne. Everyone else isn't allowed to use vsftpd. My main account is stan. So when I connect to the machine via SSH, I'm logged in as 'stan'. When I try to log in to the FTP server with "ftp localhost" and I fill my own username I get an error message saying permission is denied, I don't get a chance to enter my password. When I fill in the username 'bourne' it asks for a password, I enter it, and I get the message 'login incorrect'.

But now it's getting weird: When I switch to the user bourne in the shell by 'su bourne' and enter the same password for FTP, I get logged in as bourne. Then, when I enter 'ftp localhost', fill in the username 'bourne', enter its password, the login is succesfull! It doesn't matter where I connect to (local IP, external IP, localhost, or computer name) I get connected with the user bourne as long as I'm logged in to the shell with this user. Otherwise it doesn't work. Does anyone know why? Below is the config file of vsftpd:

Ubuntu :: Vsftpd Won't Start With Ssl_enable=YES

Oct 24, 2010

My problem right now is i'm trying to configure vsftpd to work with ssl.

My vsftpd is configured with virtual users and everything works fine (without ssl).
I can ftp to the server from a client on the same network.

Now when i try to enable ssl, the server won't start at all. Actually, if i run service vsftpd start, it look like it is starting, but if i check the processes, vsftpd is not there, and obviously, if i try to ftp, it fails.

So as soon as i turn ssl_enable=YES in vsftpd.conf, vsftpd won't start

The only message i get is in /var/log/daemon.log
init: vsftpd main process (6407) terminated with status 1
init: vsftpd respawning too fast, stopped
