What command would you use to read about the sync system call (not the sync command)? How would you read a local man page for sync that was kept in the /usr/local/share/man?
View 2 RepliesI have a Dell PowerEdge 1650 server with 3 NICs in it. I am trying to use one NIC (eth0) to connect to the internet, the second NIC (eth1) to share the internet connection to a LAN, and the third NIC (eth2) to connect to the LAN.
It is running Ubuntu server 8.10
The problem that I'm having is that NetworkManager (version 0.7.0) keeps setting eth2 as the default connection, and then I don't get any internet at all from the server.
My main goal is to be able to share files from the server to computers on the LAN. The secondary goal is to have a virtual machine hosting a Halo server, connected through eth2, so that it can host LAN games. But that is a secondary goal after I get the connections to work.
I've been looking around and finding other people who have done bits and pieces of this, but not the whole thing. I had been hoping to simply use the NetworkManger, but I don't mind editing config files.
Also I can't seem to find any good instructions on editing the /etc/network/interfaces file. The man file is incomplete, and everything seems to point back to the man file.
I have two linux box that i would like to keep in sync. I see option -avz syncs the remote with local but new local files are not pushed.

Now is that a error? I didn't press Ctrl-C or anything like that, it just finished that way. I have a local yum repository and I use reposync to sync up my local repository with the Red Hat network. Everytime I pull down the updates from Red Hat I used createrepo with no options but wanted to try the --update to see how much time it would save. Anyone have any ideas why it is it was "Killed"
On computer, I have apache server, configured at port 80, running. In local network, web page is accessible by my local IP (192...). Although, when I want to get to the page from the internet, I don't know right ip address, since router's one should be local, and also, router has it's own web page running at port 80. So I guessed that my server IP would be modem's one, which I don't know. Sometime in past, I figured out address of modem too, but it has it's own application running. Also, router supports port forwarding (which I guess, is needed), but I don't know how to get using to it. what address from internet should I have? How should I determine it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedOne of Konqueror's unique features is that i can name a local process as the action in a form. When i submit that form, the local process is executed. Very helpful for certain offline tasks. What would make it even better is if i could find a way to pass some data to that local process from the html page. This could be the content of a hidden input item, etc. Alternatively, if there is a way for Konqueror to create or update a local file with data from the html page, that would acheive the same end.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working with a dual-boot laptop running Ubuntu 10.0/Windows 7 and a Debian 5 VPS while the OS's shouldn't have much impact on my question.
What I would like to do is create a html page that I can upload to my VPS which lists all of the files/folders on my local 2TB hard drive (Specifically media such as Movies, Music, TV Shows...). The media obviously will not reside on the server, but I would like to at least have a list which will allow me to select, for instance, a bands artist so that it redirects me to the albums in the directory below.
Ultimately, I'm looking for Open Directory Browsing without actually having the media on my server. I have been attempting to create something to this effect using lynx, however, I'm not sure if it can be done with this command or if it's even possible for that matter.
I am trying to install tilp, a program for the link between a computer and a Texas Instruments calculator. I have downloaded all the packages to a local directory. I tried telling yum to install all the packages at the same time, though, the dependencies still fail to resolve (though they are all in the directory). I don't know if it would be safe to force install without the dependencies (even though I would install them later).

But it gives me a starnge error /usr/local/atlas is read only file system. I tried doing mount -l and it gave me that appserver1:/export/d1/Linux/doe on /usr/local type nfs4 (ro,sec=.......) I think what it means that the main server directory is mounted to /usr/local and it is read only. So, how can I fix this problem to separate the two and make my /usr/local separate

I have setup a deb mirror that is syncing the Ubuntu repositories to my local server. I am maintaining various versions of Ubuntu, from Hardy through to Lucid. I am trying to get a copy of just "Karmic" repo's to my local HDD. The problem is all the packages are under one folder /pool:
main multiverse restricted universe How would I sync all the packages for just Karmic and not the other distro's to my local HDD.
I have a simple question: Presume I have two (or more) computers set up with Ubuntu One. I copy the exact same file manually into my Ubuntu One folder on two computers, will the U1 service realise this and not download it again? For example, I want to copy to the cloud a large file so that I can share it with others. It will upload to the server from the computer I first copy it to. Then on the second computer I copy it to the Ubuntu One folder as well, because I don't want to download it since I already have it. Will the U1 service on the second computer see the local file and skip the download?

Is there a way to specify all the gids that the remote user has?

So on Monday folder B is forced to match folder A, Tuesday C forced to equal D ... and on Sunday a whole bunch of these clonings happen. This must all run unattended (at 2am) and be robust with no "what do you want to do next messages" or having the whole thing give up if there is a problem with one file. Though I do need a log of success or failure. Windows programs that do this stuff are FolderClone and GoodSync. I looked at Unison and Rsync and one or two others, but none appeared set up to do what I need, or to be excessively complex / general. I don't need something that can sync two copies, or over internet ....

Sometimes when internet goes down and any mail send then it bounced back immediately saying domain not found. Can u please tell me how i configure to hold all mails in postfix server rather than bounce when internet fails and will pass through when restored the internet around 15-30 minutes?

I recall that I used wireshark to troubleshoot a similar problem a while back, but it doesn't seem to have a way to see all of the devices- only the traffic. Everything is well configured and web pages are shown correctly from Internet (outside the local network) using the domain or the public IP.The issue is if I try to see that web pages (using the domain or the public IP) from inside the local network. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) on a Dell Precision 670 desktop that I share with another user. The OS is installed on a 160GB disk, which also has the /home folders. There is also a second internal disk (1TB) which has shared files (music, pictures, etc).
How can I configure Ubuntu such that either person can read or write to this shared disk? Right now, if someone is logged into the PC, the disk can be mounted, but then it is not available to the other person.
I want to have a shared area for movies, music, etc. where files are available for all users. What is the best way to do this? I've tried a few different things, (ie. creating a folder and sharing it among a group, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work the way I want it to. I'm now thinking maybe have a partition like /share and set the permissions to all in fstab, but I'm not sure.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIn addition to 2 "desktop" machines, I recently set up an Ubuntu Server with Apache2, but when I try to access my www.homepage from a machine locally connected to the same router (via both wired & wireless interfaces), I am directed to the Login page of the router, not to the www.homepage. Yet, when I access the www.homepage from elsewhere, my www.homepage is accessible.
I can browse to my www.homepage by entering the local IP address into browsers on both local machines, so I know the machines are talking to each other. Just not letting me get in via normal internet browsing channels.

I have a computer that's booting Ubuntu 9.10 from the first of 4 drives. The other 3 drives are formatted as NTFS. Is it possible for my 9.10 to share the NTFS drives to the network so my other network users can access my NTFS drives while I'm booted to 9.10?

Is there a "correct" way to set up a shared folder between two local users using only EXT4 that will allow both users read & write access to everything in the folder?
Here's my scenario: My wife and I use the same computer. I want two separate user accounts (mine and hers), but I want ~/Music to point to the same location for both users so that I don't have to duplicate all of the files.
Too protect the innocent, I'll use Jack and Jill.
So say Jack downloads or rips an album:
"/home/jack/Music/Radiohead/Ok Computer"
I want Jill to be able to able to create a folder:
"/home/jill/Music/Radiohead/Hail To The Theif"
I know the basics of symlinks so I can get /home/jack/Music and /home/jill/Music to point to the same place. I also have Jack & Jill in the same group.
The problem I'm having with my test setup is when Jack creates "/home/jack/Radiohead", it is set up to where Jill can read, but not write. So she can play songs from Ok Computer, but if she wants to download Kid A, she has to go in and manually change the permissions on Radiohead first.
Also, while I might set up multiple directories this way, what I DON'T want is for Jack to be able to modify /home/jill/otherdir where otherdir is just a regular directory set up with default permissions.
Oh, and as an added bonus, it would be nice to set up another account (i.e. a "guest") with limited permissions that can read, but not write/modify.
I have about 50 servers with at least 200 GB free on each host. I need close to 10 TB of continuous shared storage between almost half of the servers for a new app I building.
I was looking into buying a storage device but was wonder if I could get any use out of the free space on all the servers, grouping all of the free storage from the hosts into one reduduant storage array.
I've got an Ubuntu server hosting our websites and other various things here in our own home. We recently switched to a router that doesn't support loopback (abomination), so I've set up hosts files on our computers so we can access our own sites when on our home LAN.
However, we often take our laptops as we travel about, and I'm guessing due to the hosts files when we try to access our sites, it'll look on whatever local network we're connected to for our server, which won't work, obviously.
Is there a way to set up something like a hosts file that'll only try to look up the local IP of the server when we're on a specific network (our home one), or have one that tries to look for the local IP first, then proceeds to try and resolve the domain name and use the external IP if the local IP doesn't work?
