I'm using vsftpd as my FTP server. I have set it up so I can access my home directory via FTP, requiring my login.
But I want to make a folder in my documents (or anywhere really), which only my colleague can access. But I don't want to make a local Ubuntu user account. He just needs to be able to send files to this folder, connecting remotely, using his own login details.
I'm trying to configure vsftpd to just allow my local users to login and be confined to their home directory (and its sub-directories).
Here is my vsftpd.conf:

I've tried multiple configurations to no avail. I always end up with this same end result.
I have a postfix mail server on ubuntu 10.04 lts behind a router. so all local users are fetching/sending mails through ms outlook using local IP. Sometimes when internet goes down and any mail send then it bounced back immediately saying domain not found. Can u please tell me how i configure to hold all mails in postfix server rather than bounce when internet fails and will pass through when restored the internet around 15-30 minutes?

I'm trying to figure out how to launch rc.local before services like autofs is being executed during system bootup. The reason I wanted this is because I needed for my server to pickup a DHCP address from my college's DHCP servers in order to get an IP address. Unfortunately, I couldn't get an IP address any other way and the update-rc script is really confusing to use.

I found 2 previous posts, one from 2005 and one from 2006. The 2005 post was not very helpful and the 2006 threads are not exactly what I was expecting. So I wanted to ask the question to be sure. I have already stood up the new fedora 12 server. The old server is also fedora 12. I need to migrate local users and sendmail mailboxes. In the past couple of years the environment was small enough to create a copy of the users and then have the users mail themselves, but I want to start migrating users/mailboxes properly.
On a unix level I am a jr admin, but I have extensive senior level experience as a windows engineer and network engineer. I do feel comfortable with using the unix command line, but usually operate the unix systems thru webmin because I am not familular with more complex commands. Ideally a software solution to migrate users and/or mailboxes from one server to another is what I am looking for, but in leiu of a software solution I still need to migrate user accounts and their mailboxes. LDAP is not in place, but if the process becomes easier with LDAP I am willing to do what is needed to set up LDAP. (I have no previous experience setting up LDAP)
I do not want to change my mail server from sendmail to different software. At least right now. Both systems are up and running. They can connect to each other via public ipv4 address' only. The new server has already been installed and configured with all the software to match the old server. how to map all domain users form group Domain Users to local group users (and maybe some more)? Im using Ubuntu 10.04 x32. I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

I have approximately 40 servers running SUSE and Ubuntu that are using Microsoft Active Directory in order to authenticate. Our internal auditing group has made us disable root ssh ability, I was doing this with clusterssh, but I can login as me then su on the server to conduct root, admin, work. This is an ongoing request to get the local users and it is a painfully slow process since I have to login to each server to get the /etc/passwd file. Is there another way to get the local user information? They are now asking about seeing the last logon date or if the account is disabled, any thoughts there as well?Most of our auditors think Windows and I am trying to make my life easier but not sure what options I have. I need to get local accounts and if they are active or disabled plus last logon date. I'm sure there will be more but if I can get the basics adding more shouldn't be too difficult but I guess I'll cross that bride when I get there.

I have many clients uploading to the same directory.
I have set chmod to 733 and chown to another user on the upload folder so that the different clients do not see each others files,
but that also causes the client to not see their own files after they are uploaded or not being able to resume broken uploads.
I would like the different user log in with their own username and password but all upload to the same directory and not see each others files, but just their own. Is this possible? Or does anyone have a tip how to achieve something similar?
We have 4 servers having rhel 5.2. We have several users logged in on one of them. We have nis server/client running on them and have common home area mounted on all of them. Now we want to disable/block the accounts of the users who have not accessed our servers in last 2 months from today. What logic should we apply to do so? We were checking stat of .bashrc of each user but is not correct logic. We are going to write shell script for the same. We don't want to do anything in users home area or their files.

Using THIS I was able to get virtual users working via standard ftp. After wrestling with selinux and such I'm able to log in as a user defined in the virtual-users file.
At the bottom is the vsftpd.conf. I can start the server no problem. I've been making edits to it so I'm not sure what's right/wrong at this point in it. I have a snapshot I keep reverting to where ftp works with virtual users and then I start monkeying with it again.
First problem I have is I'm not exactly sure how to test it. If I use WinSCP, I try SFTP and in the vsftpd.log I see:

I'm testing a Debian Lenny virtual machine to simulate my ideal setup for FTP server (with vsftpd): I want all internal users (corporation users with Active Directory accounts) to ftp into the same directory (i.e. /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN/) and external users (customers) to ftp into their home directories (created manually on request).
I added user_config_dir=/etc/vsftpd_user_conf option in /etc/vsftpd.conf file and I've created /etc/vsftpd_user_conf/domain-user1 with local_root=/var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN
I have setup vsftp so I can ftp with every external and internal user chrooted and is working properly. AD validation for internal users and "normal" validation (via /etc/passwd) for external users work perfect.
I can FTP this server into /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN with any AD user with its home directory created (i.e. /home/AD-DOMAIN/domain-user1/) but if I try to ftp with any AD user without its home directory created I get the error "500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/home/AD-DOMAIN/domain-user2"
I have found some references (http://wiki.flexion.org/FtpServer.html and http://howto.gumph.org/content/setup...ies-in-vsftpd/) about vsftp PAM authentication so I would supposedly get rid of the error message and the user would log into /var/FTP/AD-DOMAIN without problems, but I can't figure out how to setup my FTP server.

I set the default "ftp" user's home directory to /tftp (was /var/ftp).
I created a small script in order to find out whether a host on the network is up or not ( as root). Made the script executable Code: chmod 711 script But now there is a problem , root can execute the script no probz but when it comes to a normal user who has only x permission on it can execute the script . When I add read permission Code: chmod 715 script the normal user is able to execute the script. But what if I dont want the source to be disclosed and still want only the script to be executable?

If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.
