I need a locked 'screensaver' that shows the real background/desktop (icons and open windows) so that my boss can see what I was working on, but my peers can't mess with it. All the Ubuntu screensavers as far as I can tell either manipulate pictures or do some 3D/2D graphics.
View 7 RepliesEverytime I unlock my screen in KDE from the screensaver the background for the Gnome interface momentarily appears before the KDE plasma workspace returns. It only appears for a second and, sure, I can live with it but I wondered if there is a way to fix it and why it is happening in the first place? I initially installed ubuntu 10.4 then installed kubuntu through the package manager and have since upgraded to 10.10 and now 11.4. I think this problem has been here since install of kubuntu

View 3 Replies View Relatedbought a craigslist video card that works for me, but in trying to get sound as well as the video (which does work) on the big screen, I ended up upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04.I now have the 11.04 installed (but not the desktop. Apparently I don't have the hardware for that!), but on the big screen, I only have the background image, not the desktop panels, etc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I have installed LXDE on my SuSE install to have a addition to the GNOME desktop. The installation went fine (of course). But I'm now faced with a problem with the transparency in LXDE, I have a box around my cairo-dock with a piece of my login screen background (looks like the well-known black-box bug. See Screen shot). This is a bit strange and I've been looking at the solutions for the black-box bug since I've had it before, but have not found a way to sort this yetv(though i have found many solutions for the black-box bug itself).
But, not only is this box around cairo-dock, the rest of the transparency in LXDE also shows the login screen background. See screen shot. Screen shot: [URL] As you can see, i haven't had time to work on the eye-candy yet.
Have recently tried to start ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop, but as I reboot my computer kubuntu only shows the terminal after the login and I cant get my desktop back.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.

When I lock desktop it correctly turnout the screen (everything go dark). When I move the mouse Ubuntu returns perfectly. My problem is that in any time I am not asked for password. I want that Ubuntu while locking ask for password to login again. I already tried configuring lock down and lock properties (application) via gconf-editor.

Is this possible? Also whats some good kids games? ive got gcompiz? and a few others,shes very good at point/clicking and navigates her way around ..... perfectly fine. So any ideas would be great.

Nautilus problem in ubuntu 11.04 I recently upgraded and now having problems with nautilus.
1) I don't know for sure if it's related but all of the icons on my desktop (files located in desktop) have little lock symbols in the upper right-hand corner of the icon.
2) I cannot open files from the desktop (because they are evidently locked)
3) I cannot open any of the folders listed when I go to "Places" (between Applications and System top of the screen) Running nautilus from the terminal, I CAN go to different folders and open files in the usual manner.
to the point on Fedora 13 I moved the top menu bar on the desktop to the bottom and auto hide the bar on bottom,now I can not use ether. Right clicking on the bars does nothing. I set a backup point before the changes. How do I fix this problem?

Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

It would be nice to know if i file i opened had a nasty virus in it like the way it does in windows. I first came to think of this since the new opera browser has built in protection from avg. Ive tried opera but still prefer firefox with all the addons like noscript and adblockplus etc.

The mouse works fine when in the login screen. There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..
AAO D255, all updates, Ununtu 11.04My desktop background and folder icons are dim in comparison to the slider and any program I open. I also notice that when I run a program that installs anything that screen dims (gets like this grey opacity I guess) after a period of time. I am plugged into the wall so the laptop is NOT running on battery.Is there some setting I need to tweak after this latest install? This did NOT occur prior to samesaid.

After changing it, I restarted my computer, typed in my username/password and it just brought me to an image of my background with no icons or the sidebar. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 it brings me to a command prompt. Also, after the log in I get an error displaying Enter password to unlock your login keyring. After entering my password nothing happens.
