bought a craigslist video card that works for me, but in trying to get sound as well as the video (which does work) on the big screen, I ended up upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04.I now have the 11.04 installed (but not the desktop. Apparently I don't have the hardware for that!), but on the big screen, I only have the background image, not the desktop panels, etc.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I have installed LXDE on my SuSE install to have a addition to the GNOME desktop. The installation went fine (of course). But I'm now faced with a problem with the transparency in LXDE, I have a box around my cairo-dock with a piece of my login screen background (looks like the well-known black-box bug. See Screen shot). This is a bit strange and I've been looking at the solutions for the black-box bug since I've had it before, but have not found a way to sort this yetv(though i have found many solutions for the black-box bug itself).
But, not only is this box around cairo-dock, the rest of the transparency in LXDE also shows the login screen background. See screen shot. Screen shot: [URL] As you can see, i haven't had time to work on the eye-candy yet.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI realise this is an issue that has been covered a lot, one way or another, but at least from what I've been able to find, most of the discussion centres around getting HDMI audio to work. However, I have problems even getting the video to work from my laptop's HDMI output.
I have an HP dv6z-se, with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 (1 Gb) video card and using F14/KDE. My problem is that when I go to System Settings/Display/Monitor, Fedora doesn't actually seem to realise my computer even has an HDMI output and only displays options for VGA and my integrated screen.
When I plug it into my LCD screen, sometimes I get a 'No Signal' message and sometimes I get garbled static and a message about unrecognised input and the frequency it's coming at.
I read elsewhere in the forum that someone was able to get video working by editing their xorg.conf file, so I went in and tried to see if I could replicate that, but none of the files in my xorg.conf.d folder had anything related to video outputs (as far as I can tell at this point).
Anyone know why each time I boot up the machine the cube background image goes away and the background colour is left. This image i am placing is in Apparency/Skydome
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install ubuntu either 9.04 or 9.10, I have the disks for both so it doesn't matter. However my computer is hooked to a T.V. with an HDMI cable. I get the bios screen and then the ubuntu language screen, but once I select the option to install it get the ubuntu loading screen for a few minutes then a black screen on the T.V. saying no signal. Graphics card is a NVidia Geforce GTS 250.

Installed a 32 bits version of ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working smoothly. So basically :
- installed 10.10 with usb key on HDD
- launch all update of the OS
- installed Nvidia closed driver
- update alsamixer to 1.0.23
So for now, I have in alsamixer 4 SPDIF out but no sound output from hdmi. HDMI output is well configured in the sound settings of ubuntu. I think this is linked to the ION 2 chipset and D510 proc.

I've a problem with my AsRock Core and my audio over HDMI. Trying to get it work now for over 2 months.On Ubuntu 10.04 it was working with the offical Realtek HDA Intel driver for Linux but on Ubuntu 10.10 the driver installation failed.

I get picture through the hdmi connection of my Radeon HD 4670 card, but when I tell the system to use the audio not only do I not get anything it also speeds up any video currently playing.
View 10 Replies View Relatedi am trying to instal kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop. i have an ati radeon hd 4600 with a hdmi cable going into the 22" lcd. The problem is i cant view the whole desktop, like i can only see a part of the corner, and all of the icons are massize. The search bar at the bottom comes to half my screen size, making installation impossible to see. Plus i can only use live cd mode using safe graphics mode. i am new to linux finding this quite confusing.

I was running 10.04 Netbook remix on my toshiba Nb305 in a dual boot with Windows 7 Pro 32bit on a 1.7ghz atom processor. I have grub 2 running and prior to the 10.10 upgrade i had run all the 10.04 updates. The 10.10 update appeared to have run smoothly and seems to boot ok but all it does is load my old background picture from before and none of my launcher bars or top status bar(sorry if these aren't proper ubuntu terms but the side netbook bar for app launching and standard top bar), mouse or keyboard.
I do know things are running in the back as my dropbox has shown that it is updated files in the back (also telling me wifi works and settings transfered). The only thing i can do is hit the computer's power off button and get the standard menu options in ubuntu for that but i have no control as i hve no mouse or keyboard control. Also note windows still launches fine from grub so that is not corrupted at all.
So I have to monitors. One is a 23" (1920x1080) and a 15.6" (1366x76 and I want to backgrounds... I'm not sure if it's possible but I'm hoping it is... I just got Ubuntu earlier this week so I don't know much about it yet.
With Windows I used DisplayFusion but it doesn't look like it's compatible to anything other than Windows..
my pc is an AMD w/ nforce chipset mobo and nvida card.What I did is select the noapic and acpi=off and it booted fine and I was able to install Edubuntu. The system booted fine except when I'm already on the desktop, I can only see the wallpaper. no icons, can't do anything. I booted on rescue, there's no problem. I can do normal things. and by the way, nvidia driver was already installed.

by the way it works very well and has really scanned the complete computer for bootable partitions. and all work without any modification.
I upgraded to 11.04 yesterday and now my dual monitor setup has no wallpaper! Just a solid white background (screenshot attached). When I log in and out, I see the wallpaper briefly, but I can't get it to display while I'm logged in.
I even tried creating a new user to see if I mucked up my environment somewhere. New user had the same problem.
I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.
View 3 Replies View Relatedmake my own home server to play with. While reading a guide I found out about a package of software called Amahi. Very easy and yet so powerful says the site. That's what I need! I looks cool and indeed pretty easy. I already start smiling because I have this old Ubuntu 11.04 computer here. Then I see that Amahi runs best on Fedora 14 and that the support for Ubuntu is still in Alpha phase. No problem, let's install F14 then. I put everything right in the BIOS. I downloaded the DVD iso image, burned it and put it in my drive. Nothing happens, soon I realise that drive only accepts CD's. I quickly change it with a CD/DVD drive of another computer, but still nothing happens. Then I read about this LiveUSB thing. I do everything needed and change boot sequence to Removable. It still keeps booting Ubuntu on Hard Disk 0. My last resort: Fedora Live i686 iso on a CD. Things go as expected. What am I doing wrong? I just want to see that (probably) blue background of Fedora booting instead of that purple one of Ubuntu.

So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

Loaded the OS using the Windows Installer as recommended in Smart Computing. When the system finished loading and I rebooted into Ubuntu the screen showed GRUB... Can't figure out how to load Ubuntu from the GRUB screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the lastest version of kubuntu (10.04). When i try to install i can switch to my langauge and change the keyboard layout. After thi i click on "install". there appears the splash screen for about 2 minutes then i always get a blackscreen.
What am i doing wrong?

After today's update in Maverick, GDM showed no users in the greeter and so it was impossible to input any login info through the GUI, though Alt-F1 console worked. I re-installed GDM and a variety of other packages to no avail.

Indeed, console-kit-daemon isn't running, and if I start it by hand and restart gdm, all is fine.
I also see the error message Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ExecFailed: Failed to execute program /lib/dbus-1/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success#012
in the logs. I also get a similar popup after logging in. It says "You might not be able to connect to the Bluetooth network via this machine."
why console-kit-daemon would fail to start?
