View 6 Replies View RelatedI use Ubuntu 10.04. I switched from KDE4, where it was possible to use Compiz's Wallpaper plugin to have multiple wallpapers, so that each desktop has a different wallpaper. I tried to use this plugin now, and it doesn't work.
I read some interesting facts here:

Obviously this info is a little obsolete since it is about Hardy, but it looks like recompiling Nautilus is still required. Can somebody tell me how to do this? Which packages do I need? Where to pull the right code from? Are there any precompiled Nautilus packages for Ubuntu 10.04 supporting Wallpaper plugin? (that would be amazing)
Does anyone know how to get multiple wallpapers to work with a netbook logon? i.e a different wallpaper for each desktop.I am able to achieve this with a gnome login but when I login with a netbook window manager all desktops have the same wallpaper that is set in System->Appearance->Backup
View 2 Replies View Related'm pretty new to Linux in general, but I have Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I saw online about a Galaxy Live Wallpaper (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/10/a...er-for-ubuntu/), but when I try to get it with the Terminal, it says 404 for a bunch of the stuff, so it won't install. From what I gather, it was only supported in 10.10, and not 11.04.My question is, are there any other live wallpapers that are compatible with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal? I'm really digging this OS, I'd love to make it even better. The Galaxy one was just incredible, I reeeeally wish it worked.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was looking at the live CD for the latest release, and I started thinking about how good the wallpapers were for Hardy and Intrepid. I wish I had kept them.I kept the .iso files for them, surely I should be able to mount the .iso and retrieve the wallpapers. where I would be able to find the wallpapers on the mounted .iso (note the .iso is not necessarily burned to a cd).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed 11.3 on my work laptop. I wanted to check out some wallpapers so went to "desktop activities" --> "get more wallpapers..." and installed a few. However, I can't see to find my newly installed wallpapers. It says they're installed, but they don't show up under wallpapers. Has anyone seen this before?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have no idea what is happening but I started getting a problem after some updates and then I decided to upgrade to 11.04 from 10.10 to see if this fixed the problem, then I just did a clean install last night and I'm still having problems. I'm always asleep when it happen or not around so I'm not sure what is happening right before this screen, but I can say I usually will only have VLC open (at this point I'm sure it stopped playing videos) and maybe Transmission in the background, nothing else. The computer won't respond to the Ctr+Alt+B+PrtScn or to the power button, or to Crt+Alt+F2 or the like, seems completely frozen...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.04 and I am thinking of setting up a few X10 lights so that I can turn them on and off at certain times of day/night. I am not to concerned with turning stuff on and off via the web but that might be a nice option. I want to keep it as simple as possible. I have looked over the forums and web but I am not sure about how to start and keep it simple.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo last night, ubuntu popped up with some updates. It was like...56mb or so worth. So I downloaded them. Once they were done, my mouse stopped working. (trackpad on my netbook) I restarted using the keyboard a couple times, shut it off, pulled the battery...but the mouse won't work. I havent tried an external yet, but I hope it will work so I can fix the trackpad problem. So, I loaded into Windows to check the mouse there, and it works fine. Is it a simple fix? Or, is it not so simple?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a script that I'm trying to use to backup my hard drive every night. The full backups are working flawlessly. I haven't figured out the incrementals yet. I thought they were working when I first wrote the script a few weeks ago, but it doesn't seem to be working anymore. I have a long script that I have a whole bunch of statements like this.

To be honest, I'm not a Linux expert and I was really surprised when I started this venture that Linux filing system doesn't have an archive bit like NTFS does and we have to use a file to store the archiving information. But there's the file at /var/log/usr.snar. My theory is I just leave that file for a week so I can create one full and incrementals through the week. Then when I want to create another full backup (when I swap hard drives), I then delete that usr.snar file. I thought that worked a few weeks ago, but it doesn't anymore. When I start my backups, they backup every folder I have listed and not just the files that changed. My full backups are 165 GB, so I'd like to use the incremental feature.
I just updated to 11.04, and noticed in the "Background" tab of the appearance app, that there was what looked like a default option to cycle a set of backgrounds. However, when I selected it, the only background that appeared was the first one in the series, and it never cycled.
1) Is cycling backgrounds possible?
2) If so, can I create my own series of them?
I'm a fairly nocturnal creature by nature, but life requires me to spend more time during the bright hours of day. I also have a visual impairment which makes it that my eyes take a very long time to adjust to darker situations. I need to be able to easily dim my screen so that using my computer doesn't keep me awake as much and doesn't prevent me from doing other stuff.
I will accept both a hotkey based solution "like on most laptop" as a timed one. My main monitor lacks simple brightness/contrast controls. f.lux doesn't suit my needs, since it only changes the screen's color temperature. I'd like the solution to work regardless of the make and model of the video card involved. Wearing sunglasses is impractical, since they make it hard to interact with objects around my computer.
So now that it's working the Server can't be seen from the internet. I see that the router changed all the ip address so I changed the fort port forwarding on the router and still not working. And the external ip address has not changed.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 is this possible?
Is it possible to set a different wallpaper for each workspace?
I have recently been unable to boot into windows xp, which is on a drive separate from my linux installation. When I select the windows installation, the computer starts back at the bios screen and returns to grub endlessly. I am running an updated 9.10. The linux will boot fine; however the most recent kernel does not show up on the list of available options, which may indicate something. I have searched the forum and found nothing that helps. There are plenty of posts asking if you have stopped using windows altogether and other non tech related posts though.
The results of sudo fdisk -l are below:
I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04.Now, when I boot up, I encounter an error in the boot cycle "An error occurred while mounting /media/cdrom0" "Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery"Pressing S does work to get me through the cycle and does not affect CD-ROM use once the OS loads. How would I find out what is causing the error or is there a safe way to stop it from trying to mount a drive with no media in it?Quote:GNU nano 2.2.2 File: /etc/fstab

I have Unbuntu 10.4 installed on a netbook. It is the only OS installed so no GRUB menu.
It hibernated last night, and now when I try to boot it hits the initial few steps in the boot process and then reboots.
Any thoughts on how to fix this problem. I have tried to access a GRUB menu w/ the ESC key but no dice.
i updated the compiz fusion plugins and decided to try some out, and when i tried the reflected windows, it logged me out and i had to log back in. but now as long as it's active, i can't login long enough for me to disable it, Edit: nvm, i managed to fix it. login under Failsafe GNOME session, and it'll be in safe mode, with all add-ons disabled, so you can manually turn them off

I couldn't find anything else in /var/log that would be useful. It's across all users. I checked the launch scripts /usr/bin/virtualbox, /usr/bin/ vbox manage, and /var/lib/virtualbox/*

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot one of my machines, it gets as far as GRUB, then proceeds to a blank screen for a second, and then repeats the cycle all over again - ad infinitum. I have tried previous kernels on the list with the same results Also, I cant boot into recovery mode either.
I have run Memtest successfully from the GRUB options and no errors appear in the results. I have tried booting from a Live CD and here I get as far as the "OS choosing screen". When I then select one and hit Enter, the screen goes blank and the machine reboots as before.
