Ubuntu :: X10 To Controll A Few Lights - Turn Them On And Off At Certain Times Of Day/night
Jul 7, 2010
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and I am thinking of setting up a few X10 lights so that I can turn them on and off at certain times of day/night. I am not to concerned with turning stuff on and off via the web but that might be a nice option. I want to keep it as simple as possible. I have looked over the forums and web but I am not sure about how to start and keep it simple.

I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

I'm using Lucid laptop-edition on an HP dv6000 laptop. I wanted to tweak the bass-treble so I installed a few volume control apps from the software center (ALSA mixer, "Volume Control", JackEQ, maybe a few I don't remember). They worked right after installation. but after restarting I have no sound. I can play with the volume all I want but I can't hear anything. When I open System/Preferences/Sound there are no devices in the hardware tab. Here is what lshw says:
Code:
bob@bob-laptop:~$ sudo lshw -c sound
[sudo] password for bob:

I have no idea what is happening but I started getting a problem after some updates and then I decided to upgrade to 11.04 from 10.10 to see if this fixed the problem, then I just did a clean install last night and I'm still having problems. I'm always asleep when it happen or not around so I'm not sure what is happening right before this screen, but I can say I usually will only have VLC open (at this point I'm sure it stopped playing videos) and maybe Transmission in the background, nothing else. The computer won't respond to the Ctr+Alt+B+PrtScn or to the power button, or to Crt+Alt+F2 or the like, seems completely frozen...

So last night, ubuntu popped up with some updates. It was like...56mb or so worth. So I downloaded them. Once they were done, my mouse stopped working. (trackpad on my netbook) I restarted using the keyboard a couple times, shut it off, pulled the battery...but the mouse won't work. I havent tried an external yet, but I hope it will work so I can fix the trackpad problem. So, I loaded into Windows to check the mouse there, and it works fine. Is it a simple fix? Or, is it not so simple?

I have recently purchased a usb microscope from Maplins, and although it does work with ubuntu 10.4 (and linux mint 9) I cant for the life of me get the led lights to work, the lights are kind of needed when viewing things close up.
Usb microscope link
The output from running lsusb gives the following -
Code:
Like I said it works, tried it with cheese, and I can get close up to stuff, but because the led's don't work it's difficult to get a clear picture with out a torch.

I have a script that I'm trying to use to backup my hard drive every night. The full backups are working flawlessly. I haven't figured out the incrementals yet. I thought they were working when I first wrote the script a few weeks ago, but it doesn't seem to be working anymore. I have a long script that I have a whole bunch of statements like this.
[Code]...
To be honest, I'm not a Linux expert and I was really surprised when I started this venture that Linux filing system doesn't have an archive bit like NTFS does and we have to use a file to store the archiving information. But there's the file at /var/log/usr.snar. My theory is I just leave that file for a week so I can create one full and incrementals through the week. Then when I want to create another full backup (when I swap hard drives), I then delete that usr.snar file. I thought that worked a few weeks ago, but it doesn't anymore. When I start my backups, they backup every folder I have listed and not just the files that changed. My full backups are 165 GB, so I'd like to use the incremental feature.

Is there some application that I can install on the supported computers where I can remotely log in and control, make configuration changes, update, and fix dumb problems... when they come up?

I'm a fairly nocturnal creature by nature, but life requires me to spend more time during the bright hours of day. I also have a visual impairment which makes it that my eyes take a very long time to adjust to darker situations. I need to be able to easily dim my screen so that using my computer doesn't keep me awake as much and doesn't prevent me from doing other stuff.
I will accept both a hotkey based solution "like on most laptop" as a timed one. My main monitor lacks simple brightness/contrast controls. f.lux doesn't suit my needs, since it only changes the screen's color temperature. I'd like the solution to work regardless of the make and model of the video card involved. Wearing sunglasses is impractical, since they make it hard to interact with objects around my computer.

I would like to do is as the subject says, I want to take a music video and then sync several light channels to the music video.
I would like dimming control of the lights as you would have with a DMX 512 system or even Midi. In which the light programming is done in a choreographed sequencing pattern, much like many Midi "piano roll" based editing software.
In a nutshell I would like to do what the Windows program "Vixen" Christmas lighting control program does, but within Linux AND for videos. Sadly Vixen doesn't support syncing to video's at this time...only audio. Another thing is that Vixen also doesn't work with Wine, so it is a no go in Linux.
I would hope that by now there is some kind of video program that does permit syncing to external output devices.

I've been an Ubuntu user for a couple of years. I have a Sony Vaio VPCCW-2S1E laptop, with an Nvidia GT330M graphics card. I had worked with Karmic, Lucid and Maverick on this laptop without any problems, until recently, when I had to re-install Maverick.
Now my laptop keeps freezing entirely (no response whatsoever), with two keyboard lights blinking. This happens randomly: sometimes I'm doing something, other times the laptop's completely idle. Sometimes the screen display turns off on freezing, other times not.

I used to work with a PS/2 keyboard. But one key of it has a malfunction. So I bought a new Cherry USB Keyboard. GRUB and the BIOS like it - no doubt, the keyboard itself is OK. But as soon as SUSE 11.1 takes control during boot, the lights of the keyboard are switched off, and the keyboard is deactivated. I even tried to re-install 11.1 from DVD with the USB keyboard plugged in alone - in vain. With the PS/2 keyboard I didn't ever had any such problems. I run a system with a Pentium III (Katmai) on an Intel RC440BX Motherboard.
