I have Unbuntu 10.4 installed on a netbook. It is the only OS installed so no GRUB menu.
It hibernated last night, and now when I try to boot it hits the initial few steps in the boot process and then reboots.
Any thoughts on how to fix this problem. I have tried to access a GRUB menu w/ the ESC key but no dice.
I'm running Debian Sid amd64 on a Vostro 1320. Both hibernate and suspend works fine using the kernel hooks, but after the system resumes from hibernation, it starts to get really sluggish. Iceweasel hits 100% CPU use, and I have to close it and open it again to get it working, and generally the system is just must slower than before the hibernation. I have to reboot to get performance back, and even doing swapoff and swapon does not solve the problem.
View 4 Replies View Relatedrunning Debian Squeeze (standard 32bit squeeze Kernels linux-image-2.6.32-5-486 and linux-image-2.6.32-5-686) happily without trouble on a 64bit capable Samsung laptop featuring an Intel T3200 Dualcore processor. However, when I try to boot using the squeeze 64bit kernel (linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64) the system proceeds through a few text lines immediately after Grub, and then performs a warm start.
The text output I get immediately after Grub look similar to the ones I get booting the 486 and 686 kernels, without any indication for the reboot behavior. The rebooting also seems to happen before any entry is written into the boot/system log files (logging is enabled). This behavior also occured when I first tried to prime the machine from the Debian squeeze install CD using the amd64 kernel. I'm generally happy with the 32bit kernels, but I'd like to use the amd64 support to do some Java compatibility testing for 64bit architectures.
The Laptop is a Samsung R510-Aura T3200 Delfina with the following Hardware and Setup (using Grub as boot loader):
- Intel Pentium Dual CPU T3200 @ 2.00GHz (see http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37160 for details)
- NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
- 3GB RAM + 1GB reserved for GeForce

Maybe a strange BIOS-Setting that works with the 32bit kernels but not with the 64bit kernel? I've seen a post on here that indicates someone is running the amd64 kernel on a T3200 successfully, and the chip is definitely 64bit capable, so the reboot behavior is a complete mystery for me
Is there a way to put Linux in hibernation, then reboot and resume when it boots back?
This would be amazing in combination with dual booting.
I have openGL working fine on my system.The only problem is that when I try to run the executable file, nothing appears unless the full scene has been rendered.In fact, it appears in parts, i.e. updates after a second, then after another second etc...However, earlier, the rendering used to be continuous and I could see each pixel getting rendered in a continuous fashion.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit (I am an experienced Linux user here), installed a few extras like docky, zeitgeist, added my Ubuntu one account (I don't synchronise much at all, about 100kb max), my twitter account using Gwibber, but nothing much else. I also mount a few smbfs shares in my fstab file at bootup. About the only other program that uses the net that I can think of is running would be rabbitvcs, but I can't imagine that will keep downloading if I am not doing anything.I noticed that when opening system monitor, it is continuously downloading 8.6kb/sec, even if I am doing absolutely nothing. It gets to the point that after an hour or so of use, 100mb or more has downloaded, but what for??
I tried a Googling a few commands to figure out what is eating up network download bandwidth, such as "netstat -p" and "lsof | grep tcp", to try to figure out what is downloading so much at a constant rate, but I can't seem to find the process.I have tried disabling stuff one after the other:
I disconnected my Ubuntu one account
I removed my Twitter account from gwibber
I terminated zeitgeist-daemon
I terminated all desktop-couch related processes
I disconnected all my smbfs drives
But it is still downloading 8.6kb/sec, steadily. This is wasting a lot of bandwidth during the day, and I am not sure what is causing it.
p.s. it is only doing downloading, never uploading.
I just updated to 11.04, and noticed in the "Background" tab of the appearance app, that there was what looked like a default option to cycle a set of backgrounds. However, when I selected it, the only background that appeared was the first one in the series, and it never cycled.
1) Is cycling backgrounds possible?
2) If so, can I create my own series of them?
My server is currently copying a large amount of date. I periodically check how much has already been copied by using the "ls" command in the destination folder. Is there a way so that ls kind of self updates itself? Like in a log or so? Or like when using cp -v?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have recently been unable to boot into windows xp, which is on a drive separate from my linux installation. When I select the windows installation, the computer starts back at the bios screen and returns to grub endlessly. I am running an updated 9.10. The linux will boot fine; however the most recent kernel does not show up on the list of available options, which may indicate something. I have searched the forum and found nothing that helps. There are plenty of posts asking if you have stopped using windows altogether and other non tech related posts though.

i updated the compiz fusion plugins and decided to try some out, and when i tried the reflected windows, it logged me out and i had to log back in. but now as long as it's active, i can't login long enough for me to disable it, Edit: nvm, i managed to fix it. login under Failsafe GNOME session, and it'll be in safe mode, with all add-ons disabled, so you can manually turn them off

I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 off the live cd but it was unable to partition the raid and kept failing. I was then told top use the alternate cd. I use that and my raid is detected, partitioned, and the system is installed. However now I cannot install a boot loader as I get continuous errors. Right now I am left with no ideas with what to do. I have Ubuntu installed to my hard drives just no way of accessing it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot one of my machines, it gets as far as GRUB, then proceeds to a blank screen for a second, and then repeats the cycle all over again - ad infinitum. I have tried previous kernels on the list with the same results Also, I cant boot into recovery mode either.
I have run Memtest successfully from the GRUB options and no errors appear in the results. I have tried booting from a Live CD and here I get as far as the "OS choosing screen". When I then select one and hit Enter, the screen goes blank and the machine reboots as before.
I've set all the wallpapers I want to cycle, I've set the time to 15 sec checked the "Cycle" box but nothing happens. The background stays the same. Log in-out didn't work. I'm on Ubuntu Classic
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently had my laptop which ran windows xp, wiped and ubuntu installed in its place. I was told of all the grand benefits of ubuntu so I thought yeesss. Everything was running beautifully, everything was heavenly, until i encountered "a flash website ". This was strange because ..... worked fine.
Anyway ever since I encountered that site Ubuntu crashes on startup. I log in then crash. Its strange because sometimes it takes a while to crash e.g. when trying to open any application, or sometimes its instant.
1. How i diagnose this problem so it can be fixed, remember it may have to be before the log in.
2. Is there someway I can do a system restore to its original settings or something?
After a terrible problem I had with x-server, I decided to opt for a clean install. So, naturally I poped in the 10.10 LiveCD (from Canonical), deleted the Ubuntu Partiton (ext4) and swap, and entered the installer. I have a 40gb Vista partition, 90gb media partition, and 20gb unallocated free space. Once I get to allocate drive space in the installation, I get three options - Install alongside other operating systems, erase and use the entire disk, or specify partitions manually. If I click install alongside other operation systems, it tries to take space away from my media partition to install ubuntu. I'm not too advanced with Ubuntu, so I don't think I'm going to specify my own. I don't know how much to give swap etc, etc, etc.What ever happened to use the largest amount of continuous free space? I have 20gb free I would love ubuntu to use.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the video drivers for my ATi 3870 and I found out the hard way it was the wrong driver, so now upon booting I can only get as far as an Ubuntu screen with some text and then my computer will restart once it reaches that point. It'll keep doing this until I turn it off, and I can't seem to get to a point in which I can get any control over it. I made a live CD but it has the same effect.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe login cycles- I already have a problem with mounting something connected with USB (long term minor annoyance, but everything works), but suddenly I cannot log in. When I put my username and password in, the screen flashes black for about half a second, then the login screen re-appears. If I put the wrong password in, I get an authentication error message (as expected) without turning black and then cycling again.
I have no problems going into terminal mode and logging in. I've tried all sorts of suggestions related to this problem- reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, apt-get clean, sudo startx, and the last indicates that x-windows is already running. I've found a couple more things to try, but I'm not too sure how well they'll work. It seems to be connected with x-windows, but I don't know what is causing it. Last night I had a big problem that required reinstalling nautilus (couldn't set up a connection to a remote server), and that problem was fixed- but this developed when I booted this morning.
I just want to tell laptop users how they can protect their hdd from heavy load cycle count (spin up/down of the hdd) when using battery.If you are not sure then just type this command several times in interval of 1-2 minutes, and you will see how much the hdd head spins down, and up: Code: sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda | grep -i load_cycle.Change /dev/sda with appropriate hdd path for your pc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an EeePC 701 4G running Ubuntu Netbook (10.04). I installed the system on its 4GB SSD for speed reasons - fast SD cards are expensive. I keep all user data on a fairly slow SD card. Problem is, after a few updates, I have less and less free space on the SSD. Since updating replaces old packages with newer ones, shouldn't the size remain more or less the same? I'm almost out of space and will probably have to stop updating the system soon... and yes, I do perform apt-get clean after every update. It helps, but the size is still steadily creeping upwards.

The system works perfectly, but I'd like to understand why I get these errors, and how I can fix them.
I have a client who has for the last four years been running a Red Hat 4.1.18 Server with absolutely zero problems. Yesterday somebody had a problem with one of the attached Windows PC's and some genius decided to reboot the server. By genius I mean idiot and by reboot I mean pull turn off the power to the box.
When they tried to reboot, they get a kernel panic. This is what the screen says;

The server runs the database for their entire POS system so they are now dead in the water. I'm stuck, I've never come across this before. What do I do to recover this?
I want to cycle between three directories, always in the same virtual console (VT). Just the case of 'cd -' but with three dirs instead of two dirs. Can this be done by simple means?
