Ubuntu Servers :: Upgrade To 10.04 Under Hyper-V Screen Now Scrolls Really Slow?

May 6, 2010

I have a virtual machine that was running Ubuntu Server 9.10 under Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 and the performace was acceptable. I run it in text mode with no X windows. I use it for LAMP. I upgraded to 10.04 and now the console is almost unusable it is sooo slow. It starts booting and text is painting fast and then something happens to the video. The screen goes to green, draws a few vertical lines, then clears back to a black screen but you can tell it is in a new video mode and the rest of the boot process and logging in and using the system is horrible because scrolling and redrawing of the screen crawls. Never had this problem in 9.10.

I'm sure that it is a "flipping from a text to a graphic text mode" issue at some point during the boot process. I've tried playing with kernel options (vga and nomodeset) but neither helps. When it gets about half way through the boot, something is making it change and then I'm screwed.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I enabled ssh and I can ssh in with no problem. Performance is great so it is definitely the console now being in a "graphics mode" kind of issue.

Ubuntu Servers :: Slow After Upgrade To 10.04.1 LTS

Dec 31, 2010

About 3 months ago I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 and the experience has since been very problematic in regards to overall performance. The problem is mostly with MySQL, but I have also noticed that the smallest amount of disk IO slows down the system a lot. I was expecting a slight performance improvement before I upgraded, but instead I got a very big opposite. I tried tweaking the MySQL server settings, but the improvement has been minimal.

At this point I am going to have to make a new system with something like Centos (I've heard good things about it's performance). Before I do, I want to give Ubuntu one last chance and ask if anyone knows anything that can be done to fix the performance issues. At the very least go back to something that is comparable to 8.04?

Ubuntu Servers :: Only Detecting 136.9GB Of Disk Space On Hyper-V?

Jul 28, 2011

We're trying to install Ubuntu Server 11.04 on Hyper-V so we can run FOG and image computers that way.

When it comes to partition/format the drive, Ubuntu is only detecting 136.9GB of disk space, even though I allocated 500GB for it to be able to use. I made the disk static, not dynamically expanding.

The Hyper-V host is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter.

I was going to use Virtualbox on that server since it plays nicer with Linux, but we already have Hyper-V established and you can't do both.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Wheel Scrolls Too Much?

Jun 29, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu for the first time in a couple of years, and I'm having a problem with my mouse wheel scrolling about a half a page with every click of the mouse wheel. I never had that trouble in the past.In Firefox, I changed the correct settings inmousewheel.withnokey so that it should only scroll one line and I set the option to use the system settings to false. It still scrolls about a half a page at a time.

It's not just Firefox, it's everything, including LibreOffice, and everything else that uses a scroll wheel. I have installed Xubuntu-Desktop and also Kubuntu-Desktop. I noticed in Unity and Xfce, there are no settings for how many lines the mouse wheel scrolls. In KDE, there actually is a setting. I set it to one line, and it didn't change anything. I opened up a document in LibreOffice, and it still scrolls almost a whole page with one click of the wheel. Firefox still scrolls about a half a page.

Fedora :: Firefox And Blender Or Video Card - Scrolls Realy Slowly

Jul 9, 2009

Is it me or is Fedora's Firefox slow? This is really noticable on my machine when viewing Myspace pages, especially ones with playlists. With pages like these, it scrolls really realy slowly. Also, it seems to load pages much slower than in Windows (something in Windows that is actually better than its Linux counterpart?!?!?)

Another problem that I've noticed is that when running Blender, it shows the title bar, but if I try to drop down a menu like File, or Render, It shows a white square, about the same size as the menu should be covering the GNOME panel, and it looks like the Blender panel that the File, Render, etc, menus are on covers the GNOME Panel, but if I move my cursor over icons or click on GNOME menus, it replaces that section of the Blender panel with the menu or whatever I clicked on, kind of like a hallucination, if that makes any sense.

Ubuntu :: Ksoftirqd At 100% CPU On Hyper-V?

May 27, 2010

I installed 10.04 on a Hyper-V virtual machine and a few hours later discovered that the server was unusually sluggish. Top revealed that ksoftirqd was sucking up around 97% CPU. Reading up on the issue focused on earlier kernel issues, which I knew didn't apply to 10.04. I eventually discovered that I set two CPU cores in Hyper-V. Decreasing this to just one CPU solved the issue.

Since upgrading from Heron to Lynx (64 bit) Gnome is slow to start. Ubuntu Installation :: Mouse Not Working In Hyper-V?

Jan 23, 2010

I'm brand new to Ubuntu (or any flavor of Unix/Linux, for that matter). I installed it (9.10) into a VM in Hyper-V with aplomb. However, the mouse isn't working, so I'm getting good at using the keyboard shortcuts right off the bat.Anyhoo, I'd like to get the mouse working. I downloaded Hyper-V for Linux 1.0 (integration components), but I can't seem to get it installed. I attach to the ISO from my VM and the CD shows up in Ubuntu, but then what? I tried running the setup.pl file, but nothing seemed to happen and my mouse still isn't working.

Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox Painfully Slow After Upgrade (Not DNS)

Jan 2, 2010

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, and Firefox is painfully slow to use. Changing between already loaded tabs takes almost a second. Scrolling through a loaded tab is also slow and jerky. Other programs (e.g. Thunderbird, or just browsing the filesystem) also seem slower when Firefox is running.

I'm running Firefox 3.5.6. My PC is Compaq Presario 2200 laptop (about four years old) with 768 MB RAM. As another data point, I also have the most recent version of Linux Mint installed on the same PC, running Firefox 3.5.3, with no problems. I've searched, and some problems have apparently been due to DNS problems, but I have problems when I'm offline (wifi physically removed), looking at webpages saved on my disk, which are already fully loaded, so it's not a DNS problem. I did try steps 1 - 7

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Slow After Upgrade To Kernel 2.6.32-24?

Jul 27, 2010

I have just built a PC based around an i7-860 and Asus P7P55D mobo. It was running fine until the big update that happened today and now the internet is like treacle. I did the same update to my other (different hardware) PC and all is fine with it.

When I load the earlier 2.6.32-21 kernel instead of 2.6.32-24, the new system works as it should and the Internet is very fast. This suggests to me that the kernel update is the problem, most likely the NIC driver. This motherboard has a Realtek 8112L NIC fitted.

Has anyone else had this issue and what is the best way around it other than loading the older kernel and hoping that the next update will fix it?

Ubuntu :: Conky Slow To Run - Appear On The Screen?

Oct 24, 2010

I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 since its became available and have recently dialed in my conky config. All has been working just fine. I usually leave my system running 24x7 and will reboot it or shut it down from time to time.

I have conky running via a command line (manual) and as soon as I enter 'conky' it will run immediately. However, this morning I rebooted my system, ran conky in a terminal window as I usually do...nothing the usual script shows up in the terminal window, but conky didn't appear on the screen. I've not changed backgrounds, changed my .conkyrc file, nothing. I removed conky and reinstalled it and pulled a new .conkyrc from a backup. I could read the original just fine, but thought perhaps the . file had something wrong. Still the same results...conky didn't appear on the desktop. Here is what is really weird.

After about 3 or 5 minutes, conky appeared on screen and is running fine except its no longer pulling my external IP number via:

Why its taking conky so long to appear on the screen?
