Am doing a simple partition imaging program. Am using libparted for partition things. Before that I want to list the available hard disks (/dev names) attached to the PC Programmatically.
View 2 RepliesThe problem is every forum I read pretty much ends up with someone suggesting DD, everyone agreeing and the threads dead-end. This is not a good solution for real world large scale usage which is what I'm trying to do. At least it doesn't appear to be unless there is some switch I have misinterpreted when invoking the command. The problem I have with it is it's super bloated and god awful slow. It tries to write out the entire partition or set of partitions (based on the choice I have made) reguardless of if any of the space had been empty, and lets say the partition I copied from was 80 GB and I copy it to a 160 GB disk/partition... I am left with an 80 GB partition and 80 GB unused space and a need to use another tool such as Gparted to resize the newly imaged disk accordingly.
Right now what I use is Norton Ghost and it can do the job I need in only a couple minutes instead of a couple hours and it sizes the partition to max size all at once. I do not want to use this program tho... The fact is in order to make ghost run at a usable speed I have to use it's Windows and not its DOS version which leaves me using something like BartPE and... that's worse than using Windows ME. Surely someone out there has noticed this is a problem and developed a better program that can at least run on par with Ghost.
why I was hoping for a Linux solution it's because I would like to use a "one stop shop" disk, so to speak, where I can boot into a small linux distro such as Puppy and have a full suite at my disposal rather than booting with one disk, wiping, rebooting with another disk, ghosting then testing everything. I suppose if anyone knows of a distro that can already do all that including a good ghost alternative already packaged I would love that.
Does anyone know of a script / program that will give me a listing of all the content on my hard drive(s)? I have two drives that I keep my content on (which is re-downloadable if I lose a drive). In the event that I lose a drive, I would like to have a list that I can refer to so I know what I need to re-download again.
It would be good if it doesn't list *every* file but maybe only the relevant folders and files. For example, many folders are extracted archives of 100's of files. If it just gave me the folder name that would be better than all the files (less stuff to sift through).
I installed Redhat Enterprise 3 on one of my servers. In my haste I didn't properly partition both Hard Drives and only properly partitioned one of them. Thus now I have

Where /dev/sda1 is actually a 80 GB hard drive. Is there anyway I can safely and easily repartition the unpartitioned space without causing a huge mess? I have a very important Oracle database on /dev/sdb1 and thus I want to be able to back it up on the second disk. I can create a partition on that drive?
I am installing Ubuntu on my server that has 2 2tb disk drives. My plan for this server is to set it up as my web server (using apache), will need a mysql database and would like a ftp site. I could really use some advice on how to partition the hard drives.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there any performance degradation or complications that arise from having Linux installed on a separate, physical hard disk from Windows in a dual-boot setup? I have a computer that I'd like to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows but the current hard drive is quite fragmented and the Windows partitioner won't allow me to make a partition large enough to comfortably run Linux+several gigabytes of media that need to be stored. The rig, however, may have room for another internal drive, so I thought that having a separate physical disk reserved completely to Linux would be an easy solution. The tech guy at the local computer store suggested there might be difficulties with this configuration because one drive needs to be the "master" and the other a "slave", resulting in boot complications.

The 400GB has the OS and SWAP while the 1TB are going to be used as storage....
Now for the problem, when I have both the 1TB drives in I can not format or mount either 1TB drives. Says Device is in use or "The device file '/dev/sdc1' does not exist"
Now if I take one of the 1TB drives out I can format, partition, and mount it no problem...it only seems to be a problem when both drives are connected...

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an hp laptop with 2 hdd slots, both are sata. it came with a 320gb hdd with vista ultimate 64. i added another 320gb hard drive to my laptop and installed kubuntu on the second hard drive. Since vista was my primary hard drive, parts of grub were installed on it i.e. stage 1.5. And the rest was installed on the kubuntu hard drive. Because of that neither os would boot independently of one another.
I eventually got tired of kubuntu and in wanted to uninstall it. I formatted that disk. Now vista gave me grub errors, like I knew it would.I was going to fix the vista boot sector and mbr by running bootrec.exe off of the vista disc. But since I have an hp laptop, hp doesnt provide a recovery disc with just vista, it is an install of the factory image of the os plus software and therefore doesnt have the utilities I need to fix my problem.I ended up navigating to some sort of command line in the windows recovery environment and tried running it there, but no luck.
I tried navigating in the hp recovery environment, and accidently had vista start to reinstall itself on the drive, and actually I did that 3-4 times, each of which I stopped the recovery early on, within 30 seconds, but it had managed to mess up my partition table. I was wondering if there is some utilities in linux/ windows that will help me restore the partitions back the way they should be? I have done a data recovery with get data back for ntfs, and was pretty successful getting some stuff back, figures since the mft was screwed up.
So first of all I want to make an exact clone of the hard drive. Something like dd but just make an image file for now. Since there are no partitions on the drive I dont think I can use partimage, or drive image xml and I wonder if clonezilla will work. And I dont know how to test it without have to reload the image and wiping the drive in the process. I have imaged the drive with get data back but it does me no good cause I cannot restore that image back to the drive, or at least dont think I can.
Second I would like to see if I can recover the partition table , or mft that was over written. Here is a list of programs I can use for imaging or recovering. [URL]Third, since I have 2 320gb hard drives, one that is corrupted, and one that I took kubuntu off of and loaded vista with the recovery disks. Can I take the mbr, and partition table, or boot sector off of the working vista and move it to the broken 320 and fix it that way?

I want to make an image of a partition containing a Windows XP system.
I know that Norton Ghost can do it, and I think Clonezilla, and many other programs also.
But I was wondering whether a simple dd would work.
The basics would be something like this:
Boot the computer from a CD or USB containing a live Linux. Then:
dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/someExternalDisk/xp.img
where hda1 is an NTFS filesystem containing an XP system.
To restore,
dd if=/someExternalDisk/xp.img of=/dev/hda1
Obviously it needs a few other things to make it nice, like:
bs=2M,
pipe to gzip
zeroing the empty space before compressing,
But would the basic scheme work? I don't think dd cares what's in the partition, so it should work.
I have to image a sparsely populated 20GB NTFS partition onto an ext4 volume. While doing dd if=/dev/sdb2 bs=10M | gzip F14 64bit falls into kernel panic screen. What other method of taking per-sector image of a HDD is possible?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running OSX Tiger (10.4.11) here on my trusty old G4 MDD with a "giga" 1.4gig CPU accelerator and doing quite well with it actually.I have discovered Gimp and Inkscape and love the open source concept.I registered only a few days ago, and have been lurking around to see if I can get a look at Ubuntu in action.Would it be possible to install some version of Ubuntu on a partition of one of my internal hard drives and be able to boot it, using the option key at power-up time?I guess this would be called a "dual-boot" situation.If so, can someone provide a link as to what to download.

This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that Ubuntu stopped listing my Windows XP partition in my Places menu like it used to but let it go because it wasn't something I needed to access often. But now I'm discovering that Ubuntu is also not mounting my DVD drive when I put a CD in, nor my USB flash drive that I just reformatted to NTFS using gparted within Ubuntu, nor does any other external USB drive. I don't know how to start with troubleshooting the cause.

When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

Part of the functionality will check if a certain window exists, and if so let me know. The idea here is to prevent accessing the same machine twice. (although, and override option would probably be needed, just in case, but I digress...) I've searched through the screen man page and don't see anything that'll work. I'm not beyond forking screen and ending up with a custom version. However, I'd like to avoid that if I can.
Edit: I'd like to see something like "screen -S screen_name -window-list" or similar.
how to pipe the current directory listing into sort so that the output is the date in descending order (primary sort key). If there are multiple entries with the same date, I'd like the times sorted in ascending order. It seems simple but for some reason this isn't working:

Firefox opens file listing instead of Nautilus opening file listing.When I access a folder via "Places" -> "Home Folder" or "Places" -> "Downloads", Firefox opens and list the contents of the directory.I have re-installed Nautilus, un-installed Firefox and then going to "Places" -> "Home Folder" or "Places" -> "Downloads" launches Nautilus and I can view the contents normally. Anybody else had this problem with Firefox ? Anybody know how to fix this Firefox problem ?Running Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 64bit.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos 5.5 system with 2* 250 gig sata physical drives, sda and sdb. Each drive has a linux raid boot partition and a Linux raid LVM partition. Both pairs of partitions are set up with raid 1 mirroring. I want to add more data capacity - and I propose to add a second pair of physical drives - this time 1.5 terabyte drives presumably sdc and sdd. I assume I can just plug in the new hardware - reboot the system and set up the new partitions, raid arrays and LVMs on the live system. My first question:
1) Is there any danger - that adding these drives to arbitrary sata ports on the motherboard will cause the re-enumeration of the "sdx" series in such a way that the system will get confused about where to find the existing raid components and/or the boot or root file-systems? If anyone can point me to a tutorial on how the enumeration of the "sdx" sequence works and how the system finds the raid arrays and root file-system at boot time
2) I intend to use the majority of the new raid array as an LVM "Data Volume" to isolate "data" from "system" files for backup and maintenance purposes. Is there any merit in creating "alternate" boot partitions and "alternate" root file-systems on the new drives so that the system can be backed up there periodically? The intent here is to boot from the newer partition in the event of a corruption or other failure of the current boot or root file-system. If this is a good idea - how would the system know where to find the root file-system if the original one gets corrupted. i.e. At boot time - how does the system know what root file-system to use and where to find it?
3) If I create new LVM /raid partitions on the new drives - should the new LVM be part of the same "volgroup" - or would it be better to make it a separate "volgroup"? What are the issues to consider in making that decision?
In windows one could identify the drive by letter..easy...but in merrkat I need to identify and augment a file that allows the start up location of information for a program in either of my 2 cd drives. One is the internal cd floppy and I have a second that is usb connected a cd/dvd. I would like either one to be "seen " as the possible source for the necessary information". How do i write that into a file?? The sample file I am changing is below..... All;
