I mount /home on its own partition that it is 20GB wide.I used 8GB in /home/b. /home contains just /home/federico & /home/lost+found (which appears to be empty).Strangely the partition appears to be full. I kept deleting files (and deleting also the Trash) but after I while my partition was full again.I do not use a swap file on this partition.

Trying to clean install 11.2 dual boot with Win xp already installed. How do I create a new home partition, don't want to preserve the existing home partition from a previous attempt. DVD installation and automatic config keeps saving the thing.

Lately, I've found 2-3 times an .exe file with a random name in my /home, and another data file with a random name as well. I'm a user of wine, but none of the programs that I use seems to be the cause. Last time it happened I sent it to virustotal.com, and this is the result: [URL].. So, this is clearly a virus. The two files show "nobody" in the proprietary field and "none" as group. What can I do to track down the cause? Also, telepathy-butterfly likes to hog 100% of CPU lately, and all I can do is killing it: is someone exploiting a vulnerability? if so, why the hell would he drop a win32 virus?

I set my fstab to auto mount one of my partitions in ~/Music.It works perfectly, but there is always the icon in the desktop pointing to my partition with the name "40 GB FileSystem". The idea behind mounting it automatically to ~./Music was for the partition to be transparent to me...Is there a way to remove that icon from the desktop and from the Places menu?
View 9 Replies View Relatedrecently i made a backup of my home directory in 10.10 before reinstalling 10.10. again.This time I chose to manually define the partitions (50GB Root, 25GB Swap, 325GB Home)Now i wish to migrate the old home into the newly installed home, which is on a separate partition.I have found the following documentation URL...Still, as a beginner I am not quite sure about the necessary steps to perform.As the new home is located on a separate partition is it possible to simple delete all directories there and copy all directories from old home to new home with rsync?
Do I have to install all the software that corresponds to the old home first followed by migrating home or first migrating home followed by installing the software such as thunderbird, Texlive2010 etc.Guess that migration should take place at a later stage. Otherwise my old profile files from firefox and thunderbird will be overwriten by new ones?
Been digging around and not finding anything that quite works.
Background: I had an existing 10.10 install and 10.04 on another partition. When I installed the 10.04 I told it to use the existing /home partition which is also being used by the 10.10 install. All good, both users have directories with all their data in the same /home partition.
Issue: So, as the 10.04 was 32bit (experimenting but another story) I decided I would replace with 10.04 64bit. All went well except when I did the manual partitioning I screwed up and instead of setting the existing /home partition to 'use but don't format' - which I think is what I must have done last time - I left it as 'don't use and don't format'. So, obviously, now the new 10.04 install has its /home inside /, which I don't want. I want it on the existing /home partition as it was with the previous 10.04 install.
Question(s): Is there any simple(ish) way of doing this without a reinstall? Not a major problem as I have only just installed and can do it again without losing anything but time, but I would like to figure out a way to do it without if possible.I want to essentially move the /home/user directory (rather than the /home) and make it /media/home/user inside the existing partition. Seems easy enough on the surface but becomes involved as I investigate.Ubuntu 10.04 minimal install with Xfce DE.
Last night I rebooted my desktop and it failed as in it just kept resetting after the bios post...so I changed my boot drive which gave me a "no bootable drive found" error(this confirms hdd fault) thee I booted a live cd and checked my partitions
They are as follows
sda1 - boot(ntfs)
sda2 - windows(ntfs)
sda3 - swap
sda4 - ubuntu(ext4)
I tried to mount sda4 to reinstall grub but it failed...says the partition is corrupt sda2 has no problems and I made a backup for it now the problem is how do I perform a disk check on sda4 and how do I get my system up and running again? I dont want to reinstall!
I have Ubuntu 10.04 dual boot with WXP Update manager said I needed to update. Gave the password. Then it said reboot. When I rebooted, only the XP partition would boot. I saw that grub was updated. Is it possible that the grub update corrupted my grub? I can see the menu to select either WXP or Ubuntu, but when I select Ubuntu, the system reboots from scratch. I am booted from an Ubuntu USB key right now. I tried to mount what I think is the Ubuntu partition, but there does not appear to be anything on it.

i have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:

and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.
I was wondering what the best way is to partition multiple distros to share one home partition.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have finally been convinced to partition my 500GB hard drive from a two partition setup with root and swap to a three partition setup with root, swap, and home. I found a nice tutorial about how to do this, but here is my question:
A) How much space do I leave for the root partition and the home partition?
I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

I have search on the net for this problem and i have understand it a little. But my situation is a bit different and because i don't want to format my hard disc i wanna try to fix it. So before a couple months i download ubuntu 9.10 and i installed it a month later. But my computer used to crash all the time and i couldnt use it. So i download the latest ubuntu 10.4 and install it while having windows xp and the old ubuntu 9.10(so i had windows xp, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.4 partitions). Now i tried to delete the partition of ubuntu 9.10 from disc utility. so i have the message i wrote above when i boot. I dont wanna delete my windows xp and ubuntu 10.4. what should i do to stop this message from appearing.
we connected the new hard disk in the folder /home /newhdd it has alot of files and we gave access to the folder /home via NFS When we attach a folder on the remote computer is on a remote computer folder newhdd empty, while the other folders in the directory /home full like on NFS servers.

Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Currrently 53 GB filesystem is mounted as /media/3467BH89JK789 but this does not work well with KVM. how do I create this logical volume out of 53 Gb filesystem partition and add proper selinux info and do I add to vg_vostrolx volume group and in a different volume group?

I have a separate ext4 partition which contains all my data (music, movies, etc). When I delete files from this partition it is very slow because it copies files from my data partition to the Trash folder in my home partition. How can I avoid this? Can't the trash be configured so that it uses a trash folder in each partition instead of copying files to another partition (which is slow).
So I reinstalled ubuntu on my laptop, but my partition is full while it isn't. I launch baobab, it says I got 4.48 GB free of 60GB while there are only 27GB files on my partition. Here is my partition set-up if it's useful:

I have a Acer Aspire 7730ZG laptop, I don't know what else I should give for information.
I have a total of four partitions on my Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) system:
sda1 = /boot
sda2 = /
sda3 = swap
sda4 = /home
My boot partition is 94 MiB which I was recommended would be more than enough space. Turns out my /boot partition is full and I now get a message every time I log into Ubuntu saying, 'The volume "boot" has only 0 bytes disk space remaining.' Also after installing GParted to check up on my partitions I got the following error in apt-get:

I have no experience messing around in my /boot partition besides modifying GRUB. I think most likely I just have too many kernel versions installed in the /boot partition?
I few months ago I was forced to do a fresh clean install of Karmic becasue my root partition (then 80 GB) was full. I shooulkd have used a LiveCD to resize partitions then but I didn't so when I installed Karmic this time I ended up with a 160GB partition for /.Color me surprised when last night I got a message that / was at less than 5% free space.
1. I routinely do a apt clean so the cache is not an issue.
2. I do not store backups on /. I use rsnapshot to same backup on an external hard drive.
3. I use Virtualbox but all my hard drives (VDI) are on /home.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Lucid server (for a Moodle install) and have sucessfully mounted a cifs partion that resides on a Win 2008 Server to be used for backup purposes.I fist tried using Webmin to backup files but have subsequently also tried using rsync.Whatever method I try to use to copy files across I am getting an error "No space left on device 28", yet the Windows partition has over 800Gb free. The root partition on my Ubuntu server also has over 25Gb free. I have also checked /tmp and /var/tmp and am unable to find anything that might cause the problem. The Windows share is mounted as follows:
//windowsserver/share$ /mnt/backup cifs credentials=/pathto/.smbcredentials,rw 0 0
I am running Ubuntu in WUBI inside Windows, my first question is, can you do a full install to a new partition through the WUBI installation? Or would it be better to partition the disk, and just install Ubuntu, then deal with the MBR issue (been a while since I had a normal install, maybe the boot problems are gone?)? And is there any actual advantage to doing a stand alone install, while still dual booting Windows? Is there any gain from it versus the WUBI install I am running now?
