Ubuntu :: Boot Screen Doesn't Appear Anymore / Show That?

May 7, 2011

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I like it a lot. However, there's a graphical error which started to happen after the very first bootup. The startup screen (the purple one with the 5 dots that appear) isn't showing anymore. It is replaced by some console technical guff scrolling down my screen (which isn't a problem, because Ubuntu itself works fine, but it just looks a bit rough). Again, on shutdown, it displays some amalgamated mix of more technical jargon, and a terribly lo-res version of the shutdown screen.
Is there any way I can fix this?

Fedora :: F14 Boot Screen - Show Progress?

Dec 26, 2010

I just installed the latest updates for Fedora 14, and a restart was necessary so I did. Then, it didn't reboot! It hung when the cursive Fedora "f" was there for about 15 minutes. I had guessed that maybe it was doing an automatic fsck disk check, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I couldn't change to tty2 etc while this was happening and for all I knew, the system was frozen. Is there a way to see the load progress (the text) while booting?

FYI, after 1 extremely slow but eventually successful boot, everything is back to normal with rapid boot times.

General :: Don't Show Boot Messages During Clonezilla Bootup - Splash Screen?

Jul 14, 2010

I am at a loss trying to figure out the options to not show the scrolling boot messages during the boot-up of Clonezilla. Is there a way to have a loading splash screen or even have a static logo that is displayed during the boot process? I have my automated recovery method all ready to go short this one last feature. I have searched all over and am coming up empty on this one.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Screen Doesn't Show And Installation Media Won't Load

Jun 7, 2010

I've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.

Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.

Mar 25, 2011

i changed the boot up resolution in the boot up loader to 1366*768 (native res of my monitor) the boot option is still set to quiet splash however, instead of showing the progress bar, it would now always display the complete boot up log ( the list of starting services and such) i then manually changed the boot option from to 1024*768 at boot loader screen, and teh splash would show up, but then on next boot up if i stick with 1366*768, it doesnt work again

Debian Installation :: Grub Bootloader Only Show Kali Linux To Choose From - Screen Not Allowing To Boot From CD

Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...

I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.

If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...

I can not boot from cd or usb!

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 M4 Installed - Blank Screen At Boot?

Mar 28, 2010

Since 11.2 installed but shows blank screen at boot despite booting into runlevel 3 with acpi=off and noapic, I decided to try 11.3 M4 again.Media check is OK for 11.3 M4.Boot from MBR. GRUB menu shows Ubuntu and Windows 7 as well as openSUSE 11.3 desktop default and 11.3 failsafe. Both opensuse11.3 default and 11.3 failsafe return a blank screen despite the following boot options:

33 acpi=off noacpiI still cannot get to a terminal to run sax2. I read from a thread of opensuseforums (Opensuse 11.2 Blank Screen) where similar problem was solved using the correct driver which is actually "ati", NOT "radeon" for ATI Technologies Radeon Xpress 200M.Then because both Windows and Ubuntu boot fine from GRUB menu, it occurs to me I should boot up Ubuntu and try to locate openSUSE's /etc/X11/xorg.conf in order to edit the file and change the driver to "ati".In Ubuntu, xorg.conf of opensuse 11.3 M4 shows:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

But it doesn't show as installed software in the Installed Software Centre. So, I cant uninstall it. I can't configure it? If I try to open Gmailwatcher I receive a popup asking me to open it from an icon above - but there's no icon there, I just want a simple email notifier - preferably one which I can add an audio alert.

Hardware :: Machine Will Hang Before It Gets To The Ubuntu "boot" Screen With The Dots That Show Progress As The Machine Boots?

Oct 1, 2010

I have a roughly 3-year old PC that I put together from parts (listed below) that has been running great with various flavors of Linux as the sole operating system. It is currently running Ubuntu 10.4. A couple of months ago, it started to have intermittent problems booting. The machine will hang before it gets to the Ubuntu "boot" screen with the dots that show progress as the machine boots. If I look at the power on messages from the BIOS, it fails at different points in the process - sometimes during the memory test, sometimes during the search for IDE drives. It fails about 2 out of every 5 attempts to boot. It sometimes takes 2-3 tries at booting before it actually works. Sometimes when it does boot, the Ethernet jack doesn't work and I see errors in syslog about there not being a carrier.

There are no syslog entries when the machine does not boot. The machine is plugged into a UPS. The UPS indicates that it is running at 13% of capacity at 123V/60Hz. I'm in the US.Once the machine boots normally, it will stay up without issues for days.I've checked the 4GB of RAM (I added 2GB to the original 2GB several months ago) using the memory testing application on the System Rescue CD and no errors were found.I've replaced the motherboard battery, which seemed to help for a few weeks, but then the problem returned.I've checked the hard drive for errors using the SMART diagnostics tool in System -> Administration -> Disk Utility and buy running fsck. The interior of the case is not very dusty and all the fans appear to be working. Are there things I can do to investigate and fix this issue other than starting to replace components - starting with the motherboard and the power supply? The parts of the machine:

It's like they were never installed, but I know for a fact I watched them being installed in the terminal and everything. The application I am most concerned with is ies4linux(mainly because its in the way of my WoW playing). I did the whole cabextract (already have wine) and downloaded the ies4linux file.It runs the installer for it, however it doesn't show in the applications or home folder.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: AdobeAir & BBC IPlayer Desktop / Show As Installed?

Installing on 10.10 64-bit works fine following the instructions on url. The BBC Desktop functions well once I reenabled KWallet.

My problem is that when I refresh the repositories the BBC Desktop is reported as broken, and the reason seems to be that AdobeAir does not show as installed in Synaptic. It does not matter if I install AdobeAir using .deb or .bin, it still is not reported as installed. Any ideas about how to make AdobeAir show as installed?

How do I get rid of this totally?

A simple 1,2,3..

The name of the App is AdvancedCleaner Free. It is running in WINE.

Since I certainly didn't install either of these....

I checked synaptic for wine, but it doesn't show as installed.

Ubuntu :: Installing / Reinstalling Gimp - System Didn't Show It As Being Installed At All

Aug 18, 2010

I've really borked up my Gimp. I'm running 10.04 64-bit and had at some point installed gimp but don't recall how or where I got it from. The strange part is that neither Synaptic or Ubuntu Software Center showed it as being installed.

Anyway, it started misbehaving (locking up) so I figured I'd uninstall and reinstall. That's when I discovered that the system didn't show it as being installed at all. Needless to say, I couldn't uninstall it so I decided to just reinstall over the top through Ubuntu Software Center. The installation seemed to complete normally but when I tried running it I got an error stating that there was a version mismatch for libgimp and suggesting that maybe I had gimp installed in both /usr and /usr/local. Not knowing what else to do, I uninstalled via Ubuntu Software Center and then removed all gimp related files from both /usr and /usr/local. Lastly, I reinstalled again via the Software Center.

Now when I try to launch gimp I get a box in the panel's Window List titled "Starting Gimp Image Editor" but shortly thereafter it disappears and I'm back to the desktop. I've even tried it all over again but utilizing Synaptic for the final install (as well as apt-get) with the same result - it tries to load and then... nothing. I must have deleted something essential when rooting around in /usr and /usr/local that is not replaced by reinstalling gimp but I have no idea what or where. So now what do I do? I really need gimp installed on this machine. I do have a full system backup but it's a couple of weeks old and I don't want to lose all of the changes that I've made to the system since then.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Get To Boot Up / Show Menu On Dual Boot With Vista Initially

Jan 18, 2010

Have just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine. But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months! The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again. The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

Is there a way to modify the grub.cfg file to stop this problem ( all posts say dont touch this file??Or install a script to delete the grubenv file on shutdown as a workaround for me, (I have no idea how to do this whatsoever, I'm not familiar with linux at all)I did read that this problem was fixed/patched in Grub version 2, but dosn't seem.so on my system afetr I updated it when I got into Ubuntu.I couldnt find the patch or fix, I got the information I am on about from this post:URL...It seems to say it was fixed or patched by Colin Watson reading through, but I don't really understand whats being said or how to get the patch on my system if indeed there is one?Sorry for being a bit thick about all this, its a bit beyond my brain now, hope somebody can help out as I have enjoyed my brief bit of fun in Ubuntu.
