I have 10.04 installed on my 320 gig. SATA hdd and i have an 80 gig IDE that I want to install Mepis on but i do not want to upset my boot order. Can I install the Mepis and later update grub so as to have Ubuntu as my default?

It's got windows and mepis linux on here also. the installer for fc only found windows and I was wondering if there's a way to modify the graphical grub screen to contain mepis linux or if i have to disable it and use a standard text screen for grub.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Mepis 11 alpha 2 and am using the gnome desktop. I downloaded the appropriate version of Opera. When I try to install it using dpkg -i, it wont allow it because I do not have permission in either "user" or "root" desktop. I tried to edit sudoers file but it it doesn't seem to work. I can't use sudo because I am not in sudoers file and I cannot edit sudoers file because I do not have sudo permission. When I am in root desktop, I still do not have permission even to read sudoers file. How do I install Opera?

I've added a second hard drive (SATA) to my desktop machine with Ubuntu installed on it, but I can't seem to be able to update GRUB to enable booting from it without disconnecting my main (openSUSE/Windows) hard drive. Back when I used to use Ubuntu as my main OS, I used update-grub, but that doesn't work in openSUSE. Say the command is not found. Is there another way? The Ubuntu HD also has GRUB installed, but I'd rather use the openSUSE GRUB, as I don't like the text only GRUB of Ubuntu.

My question is, after WIN 7 sp1 it seems every update win 7 does borks grub and resets the system to boot from the Win 7 boot partition, Is there a way to prevent this or is it going to be a boot from CD and repair after every update?
Cause I know M$ isn't going to want to fix it as they don't like sharing systems.

I have manually added an entry for Ubuntu in my grub menu, using Yast. But every time the kernel is updated, this entry disappears. On the other hand, the one for Windows, that was added during OpenSuse's installation, is still there. So how can I keep this entry for Ubuntu ?

I was unaware of the difficulties of installing and booting Ubuntu from the "onboard raid" that the NVIDIA nForce chipsets provide. However, I've managed to get it working reliably with one single caveat:
When update-grub builds the grub.cfg, it refers to all of my partitions as follows:

So I'm guessing that the whole nvidia_blah,msdos5 is because of that. However, it doesn't seem to explain why Grub would THINK that would work and it in fact does not work. That's the biggest source of confusion on my part.
My questions are as follows: First off, because as an IT person I want to know: Why does this sort of change work? What does changing that device name change in GRUB's behavior? Is there a setting in /etc/default/grub that would change the way it's naming these RAID devices? Is there a value for this setting that would give me the device names that work, as explained above?
If there is no setting change I can make in /etc/default/grub, could I add a sed command on to the end of update-grub or can I make a modification to one of the scripts in /etc/grub.d? What sort of change would be recommended? How would I preserve this change through later package upgrades that would possibly rewrite these files?
I have a dual boot system: windows xp and suse(10.2). I had to reinstall windows(again). When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?

I have installed very few OS as a result - Windows in first 80 GB , 2 distros (20 GB each) in next 40 MB which is within the 149 GB. On issue of "update-grub" grub seems to detect all OS and generates grub.cfg. But on boot , one distro does not appear in the menu.

In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.

I tried running "sudo update-grub" at a virtual terminal and while it listed the various linux kernels ok, it then got caught in a loop spitting out some crazy looking errors. I rebooted and Ubuntu came up fine. I tried running "sudo update-grub" again from the gnome terminal and it hangs the whole computer for a few minutes and finally gives me this:

I've been trying change the default OS in GRUB. I changed the value for GRUB_DEFAULT in etc/default/grub. However, when I run update-grub, I get the following error:

Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. View 1 Replies View RelatedLast week, I received a used, older (built ~ 2005 or so) IBM ThinkCentre desktop (machine 8143-2EU) having a Pentium 4 (64 bit), 3.0 GHz CPU. It came with WinXP- 64 bit as the sole OS. When I tested my USB devices with the WinXP OS, they were detected and read. I wiped the WinXP and installed MEPIS 11- 64 bit. [There's only a single Intel Pentium 4, 64 bit CPU known to work for MEPIS 11- 64 bit. It's the Pentium 4 Prescott with EM64T. I don't know if my P4 is that one.] Things seem OK with my MEPIS 11- 64 bit OS except for the times when I plug in USB devices--> they're not detected nor read. In a MEPIS forum, a guy told me to try, after first plugging in the USB devices, running lsusb in Konsole. I do that, the system wakes up, and the USB devices are detected and read. But why do I have to do this to get my system to detect and read the devices? I've made the MEPIS system setting so that all USB devices are automounted when plugged in. Doing that did not correct this problem. As root, in Konsole, I ran hwinfo and noticed that for the USB controllers, the driver - uhci_hcd - is not active. Here's the hwinfo output for one of the USB controllers:

[I suppose or guess that all MEPIS users who don't have this USB-device-detection-and-read problem have uhci_hcd.] To see what would happen as a test, I also used a MEPIS 11- 32 bit Live DVD in this computer having the MEPIS 11- 64 bit OS. When I use the Live DVD, I have the same USB detection-and-read problem! What does that mean? With some USB devices plugged in while I'm using the Live DVD, I'm forced again to run lsusb in Konsole. This wakes up the system so that it detects and reads plugged-in USP devices. Why? Any idea on how to fix this? Does this problem seem more a software one rather than a hardware one?
I installed Mepis to a separate partion (shares swap) and now the option to use, originally installed, Ubuntu does not appear at start up. Is there a way get this option back?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.
I would like to dual boot mepis 8.5 and mandriva 2010.1. How do I set up my partitions and how do I install the distros so I can go from one to the other. I have a 40GB hard drive, which has been wiped clean.

It boots up, but when it goes to start the xserver, it seems to get problem, it just remains black with a blinking white mark. If i go ctrl, alt, f2; it takes me to the command line, and that works fine. The disc works fine on my other laptop. i would really like to use mepis, Does anyone know how to fix this issue.
