I just burned a live CD from SimplyMepis-CD_8.0.12-rel_32.iso. All went well, but I can't find the installation center so that I can fully install it om my computer. I can login with demo or root, but I don't know where or how to set up my machine.

It boots up, but when it goes to start the xserver, it seems to get problem, it just remains black with a blinking white mark. If i go ctrl, alt, f2; it takes me to the command line, and that works fine. The disc works fine on my other laptop. i would really like to use mepis, Does anyone know how to fix this issue.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently had an issue with the Network Manager Applet 0.8, and Indicator Applet 0.3.7 (applets were locked to panel and disappeared for no obvious reason could not get them back using add to panel or looking in applications, places, or system). I removed said applets using Ubuntu Software Center and reinstalled. Where do I find the reinstalled software (applets) so I can add it back to panel?

After installation, I installed Skype - I'm not sure if it was from the Software Center or via apt-get. Today, I installed 10.04 as a full installation on my desktop. The laptop shows Skype in the software center, and apt-cache search skype shows "skype - VOIP and instant messaging client", but the desktop doesn't show it anywhere.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu Software Center hangs on an installation of a downloaded .deb file from astah-community. It's a tool for UML software design. The installation was almost complete and then got stuck for some reason. I tried to click cancel but that didn't work. I closed USC and when I opened it again nothing had changed. I shut down the computer, restarted, opened USC and it was still there.
I am new to ubuntu, so how can I get the installation cancelled? I saw another post on a similar problem, where the problem was solved with:
sudo dpkg --purge --force-all astah-community
but I got:

Anyways I downloaded AVG 8.5.732 (avg85flx-r732-a3168.i386.deb) and installed the package (Synaptic Package Manager lists it as being installed) but I can't find in the Ubuntu Software Centre nor can I find it in the system/main menu list.

View 10 Replies View RelatedLast week, I received a used, older (built ~ 2005 or so) IBM ThinkCentre desktop (machine 8143-2EU) having a Pentium 4 (64 bit), 3.0 GHz CPU. It came with WinXP- 64 bit as the sole OS. When I tested my USB devices with the WinXP OS, they were detected and read. I wiped the WinXP and installed MEPIS 11- 64 bit. [There's only a single Intel Pentium 4, 64 bit CPU known to work for MEPIS 11- 64 bit. It's the Pentium 4 Prescott with EM64T. I don't know if my P4 is that one.] Things seem OK with my MEPIS 11- 64 bit OS except for the times when I plug in USB devices--> they're not detected nor read. In a MEPIS forum, a guy told me to try, after first plugging in the USB devices, running lsusb in Konsole. I do that, the system wakes up, and the USB devices are detected and read. But why do I have to do this to get my system to detect and read the devices? I've made the MEPIS system setting so that all USB devices are automounted when plugged in. Doing that did not correct this problem. As root, in Konsole, I ran hwinfo and noticed that for the USB controllers, the driver - uhci_hcd - is not active. Here's the hwinfo output for one of the USB controllers:

[I suppose or guess that all MEPIS users who don't have this USB-device-detection-and-read problem have uhci_hcd.] To see what would happen as a test, I also used a MEPIS 11- 32 bit Live DVD in this computer having the MEPIS 11- 64 bit OS. When I use the Live DVD, I have the same USB detection-and-read problem! What does that mean? With some USB devices plugged in while I'm using the Live DVD, I'm forced again to run lsusb in Konsole. This wakes up the system so that it detects and reads plugged-in USP devices. Why? Any idea on how to fix this? Does this problem seem more a software one rather than a hardware one?

I have 10.04 installed on my 320 gig. SATA hdd and i have an 80 gig IDE that I want to install Mepis on but i do not want to upset my boot order. Can I install the Mepis and later update grub so as to have Ubuntu as my default?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Mepis 11 alpha 2 and am using the gnome desktop. I downloaded the appropriate version of Opera. When I try to install it using dpkg -i, it wont allow it because I do not have permission in either "user" or "root" desktop. I tried to edit sudoers file but it it doesn't seem to work. I can't use sudo because I am not in sudoers file and I cannot edit sudoers file because I do not have sudo permission. When I am in root desktop, I still do not have permission even to read sudoers file. How do I install Opera?

I could adjust brightness just fine, but when I attempted to control the volume, nothing happened. I can adjust the volume from the mixer, but no Fn key.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOne problem is that whenever i try to install software from a deb file or try to find software in the ubuntu software center, installing from a seperate file just opens up U.S.C and when i try to find software from the software center it just sits there and searches.My other problem is that when i try to edit files in my etc or just in my main file system im only aloud to read, not edit, and i cant change the file permissions, but im the only user, and i have admin rights, why cant i edit files.

It will ask me for authentication and it accepts it but when downloading it, it never passes 0%. Does anybody have any ideas whats wrong? Thanks so much for any input.

sudo apt-get purge software-center
sudo apt-get install software-center
Both of the commands above did not produce any errors; however, I still get the same error when trying to start ubuntu software center.
I've just set myself up with lucid - to anyone involved in the development of it, congratulations; it was the easiest install I have ever done, and it looks and feels great.
However, I am having a small problem - when I've tried to install some new programs (specifically sunbird), it's told me that I need to update the software catalogue, and I can't find a function in the GUI to do so. I went into a terminal and used apt-get update in the hope that that would fix it as well as trying the update manager, and then went to the help file/google but didn't have any luck. I know I could install it through the command line, but I'd rather deal with this issue. Can somebody please point me in the right direction?
I've been thinking of turning my old computer into a media center for a while now (it was running Ubuntu Server 9.10). I recently bought a new 23inch screen so.. out with the server, in with the media center! (currently Xubuntu but running on LXDE as it's a lot lighter) My problem: The computer barely manages to play 720p videos on XBMC (on ..... or totem/vlc it's just impossible with breaks, lag and constant freezes).. I used the debug function of XBMC and guess what.. a 720p movie takes my cpu to a constant 100% usage!! =X
So here's my question.. what distro or 'buntu flavor would you advise me to use?? I thought about a minimal install but don't want to try it just yet..
