My problem is that it doesn't seem to work right on my computer. It boots up, but when it goes to start the xserver, it seems to get problem, it just remains black with a blinking white mark. If i go ctrl, alt, f2; it takes me to the command line, and that works fine. The disc works fine on my other laptop. i would really like to use mepis, Does anyone know how to fix this issue.
View 3 Repliesyesterday I was trying to install Puppy Lucid 5.2 on a old PC (PII 533mhz 265mb RAM). First of all I have launched the live cd, then set up language, time zone and keyboard... at this point pc stopped working and stay blocked on the desktop screen with no possibility to move pointer or use keyboard. Is it possible that hardware is too old to work with Puppy Lucid 5.2? May I have to try with a lighter OS (which one?)?

When I install it (tried both CD, DVD and USB-stick) all I see is "Ubuntu" with a number of dots underneath, and after a while the screen turns black.I also tried the alternative ISO (with non-graphical interface), and that installation worked; I could partition the HD, enter username and password and it copied all files to the HD. But when it said it was finnished, and I rebooted the computer (without the installation media) "Ubuntu" shows on screen with a nuber of dots underneath, and after a while the screen turns black.The computer is new, has an i5-750 CPU, 4GB RAM and a XFX Radeon 5670 1GB graphics adapter and two identical HD:s, one with a working Windows 7 installation (disconnected when I try installing Ubuntu).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to figure out how to run/install openSUSE from a usb stick for several days. I downloaded the 11.4 .iso from distrowatch & used the following command in Linux Mint to put it on the usb stick.

It gets to the loading screen and get stuck. It has a small bar going across, that never finishes. I've hit escape to try and get some info, but don't know what I'm looking for and it's too much to write down. I did notice there were several I/O errors. I did check the usb for defects and it returned ok, and the md5sum was correct.
I've also tried safe settings which takes me to a blueish/black screen and stays there. No ACPI starts to load and then drops to a shell.
how to get this accomplished? I've installed many Linux OS's and I've never had this much trouble.
ps. I"ve read the "please read" pre installation page on here, and things just don't make a whole lot of sense to me.
I have a serious problem with my sound card and Ubuntu 10.04. In the others distros (Gentoo, Sabayon, Fedora, Puppy...) the mic run very good, but in Ubuntu i can't record any sound. I can ear the sound exit from the speaker, but with sw like Sound Recorder, Audacity and Skype i can't record the sound. I tried EVERY setting in alsa mixer/Gnome alsa mixer but I can't resolve the problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting my computer to boot from two different linux live cds, and I'm looking for ideas. Last night, I downloaded both Damn Small and Puppy linux to my emac and burned disk images of both. When I tried to boot my Dell Inspiron 8100 with them, they both appeared to work at first, but then both stopped booting part way through the process. I've run this computer on an earlier live cd version of Puppy without any problems before, and the fact that neither disk works leads me to believe I did something wrong when burning them.
I downloaded the iso files for both Puppy and Damn Small and burned these as images each to their own disk. This all I remember doing before, and I like I said, it worked in the past. I'll post more details later in the day--like where the boot process actually stops and what versions of each system I downloaded, but if this rings any bells for anyone.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the Linux scene. My school computer has linux and it works great, and I'm trying to get into programming, so I figured it'd be good to switch over to Linux (plus I just got a new computer, so it's a good time).
But, I don't know much about how to install it. I've burned a live cd from sourceforge (actually 2: the newest version and one older). I shut off the computer and put the cd in the drive, and then when I turn my computer back on I get the expected menu. I choose my language, and then it brings me to a screen with a few options: "Try Ubuntu without any changes to your computer", "Install Ubuntu", "Check disc for defects", "Test Memory", and "Boot from first hard disk" (plus some options at the bottom of the screen). I've tried every option on the menu, with both cds, but whenever I select anything, it freezes up right away. I've let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and nothing happens, so I'm pretty sure it's not me being impatient
I've also put the disc in while windows is running. When I double-click on my D-drive (in my computer) I get the error message "No cd detected, cannot run cd menu".
I'd be content running a different version of linux, I'd just like to have linux running (although I want it separate from Windows, I don't want Wubi). I'd like to be able to dual-boot, but I'd be willing to give up Windows entirely too. So, any ideas? Anything I can try? Oh, and I'm pretty inexperienced at this, so ask me if you need more details, and please respond in basic terms
I would like to dual boot mepis 8.5 and mandriva 2010.1. How do I set up my partitions and how do I install the distros so I can go from one to the other. I have a 40GB hard drive, which has been wiped clean.

I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers.The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIts basically an old SATA Hard Drive with a Windows XP partition I was trying to sell.When my computer does the BIOS checks, it doesn't pass the SMART test (but I can boot it anyway), although I can't boot Linux in any way with this Hard Disk connected (I even tried Live CD distros, like Parted Magic).I can boot the XP partition from inside the disk, although I guess its pretty close to not being able to. If I do the following, if the URL is a redirect, it doesn't work

I have to use wget http://path/to/rpm which resolves the redirect and downloads the file, then run rpm on that file.
More for my knowledge of bash than anything else, would there be a way to redirect the file downloaded from wget into the rpm (something like redirection or pipes or something), so that they could be combined into one command and you wouldn't explicitly save the file first.
Something like... rpm -ivh << wget http://path/to/rpm
I have one more question, and that is whether there is a command in linux, such as wget, that would let me pass it a URL and output the redirected-to URL if the argument.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a .wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions.
Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms!
I tried using a command likecp `ls ~/temp/*.xyz | head -1` ./But that does not work. If I echo the value of command inside back ticks and put it manually in cp command it works.

But it wors only on a few machines. (only 1 out of 6 i tried) Most of the time boot sequence get stuck on a blinking prompt cursor.

Then boot on HDD
Is it do to the usb key or machines that do not load mbr the same way?
Edit: the stick is formated with MBR have 2 partitions. The first is FAT32 and active, second is ext3
PCs i have tested can boot on USB (at leat you can select a USB device for Boot)
I have this old kUbuntu box here, which used to be 8.04. For some reason after a bunch of upgrades and other unrelated changes sound doesn't work any more.
Sound works on this machine when rebooting to Windows, so it's not hardware problem. It used to work on Linux on this machine before, so it's not weird hardware. (lspci says 00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)) This problem persists across resets. alsamixer etc. claims sound is not muted, and volume is high. it's the same no matter which program I try to play some sounds (or which -ao for mplayer, default seems to be pulse) nothing obvious shows up in system settings
Do I really need to reinstall the system to fix that, or is there something simple I'm missing?
