Is there any Linux distribution which supports the mentioned printer out of the box. Tried with Mint 10, I downloaded hplip 3.11.1 and followed instructions on hplipopensource, but OMG it is so complicated..I ran the bash script upon downloading the file. I am unable to install all the needed dependencies. For some it says not installed, When I try to install, it says it is in conflict with some other package and cannot install! I have never struggled so much in installing a printer. I was thinking Ubuntu and Mint are probably the most popular around. I am willing to shift to any distro which supports my printer. Also, scan should work. It is also not getting recognized by Xsane and other scanning apps!

In FC11 i686, I notice that after yum install xsane xsane -v reports a version of xsane that is compiled without Gimp support. Is there a special name for the xsane package that does have Gimp support?

I have just bought and installed an HP 2050 printer-scanner-copier. The printer works fine, but the scanner is not recognised by Simple Scan or XSane.
Simple Scan states: No Scanners Detected
XSane Image Scanning Program states: No Devices Available
I have Ubuntu 10.10 - the Maverick Meercat installed on my computer.
I have downloaded the hplip-3.11.3a.run file from the HP website but it is still in my download folder and I don't know how to get it from the download folder to my computer and then once that is accomplished, I don't know what to type in the terminal to get this file installed.
Heck, I don't even know if this is what I should install to correct this problem or not.

After reading and trying tons of tutorials and several OS reinstalls, I'm stuck trying to load wireless on my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. Before you say search forums! I hurry to tell I did. No solution seems to work. WLAN chipset - Broadcom's BCM4311 / BCM 2050. 1st scenario - native CentOS 5.3 drivers Although CentOS recognize WLAN card and displays it's name correctly, neither network or NetworkManager sees any of wireless networks.
2nd scenario - Broadcom's drivers Most know Broadcom has released Linux drivers. I had some more luck with them than in 1st scenario although problems occur. After successfully compiling Kernel module, wireless networks are discovered and can be successfully connected but no pages load. It seems like DNS is not resolving at all and page loading timeouts instantly. Tested on TKIP-encrypted network.

I updated to the recent 9.10 version of Ubuntu and found that my printer no longer works. When trying to print, the printer just blinks and *occasionally* makes a noise and prints out a partial line of text or whatever. It's a USB connecting HP Deskjet D1420 that is not a network printer and does not need to be networked.

I seem to be having on going issues with my printer. I was able to print a garbled test page but I get a result from terminal of printer HP-Deskjet-f2400 now printing HP-Deskjet-f2400-0. enabled since Mon May 31 15:45:04 2010 Connecting to printer... and it just sits there. Nothing is in error with the printer itself though.
I have enabled 2 screenshots.

OS: Ubuntu 10.10 I've been trying to get my HP DeskJet D2660 printer to work for a while now, but I am having several problems that I can't seem to get around. For the driver I have 2 options. The hpijs (hplip) or the hpcups driver. Neither of them work properly.
The HPLIP driver and control software keeps telling me that the stuff I print has printed correctly, but my printer does nothing. It just sits there laughing at me whilst I get popups on my monitor telling me that the print job start and completes. I have successfully printed the print head calibration paper and aligned them as told by the HP software, but after I have done so, it just goes back to sleep. Nothing prints, not even the test page. I can't understand why it prints the calibration sheet just fine and then, afterwards, it won't print anything else but tells me everything prints fine.
The HPCUPS driver works just fine, but it has these really bad shadows on everything I print caused by incorrect alignment of the print heads. There seems to be no option of correcting this using the HPCUPS driver. So, what I have is a HPLIP driver which allows me to calibrate but won't print, and a HPCUPS driver which prints just fine, but won't allow me to calibrate. My HPLIP driver version: 3.10.6 (official from Ubuntu) I've also tried downloading and installing the latest (3.10.9), but with no luck. Prints calibration just fine, then nothing else.

I've been using Ubuntu 9.10 'in anger' for a couple of weeks now and overall I'm impressed. However, a couple of days ago my old Epson C46 (which had been working fine under Karmic) died, and I had a look for a replacement.
I decided on a Canon MP270 because Canon seemed to have gone to the trouble of providing Linux drivers on their website. I even phoned Canon and they confirmed it should work fine.
Today the AIO arrived and I downloaded the printer and scanner drivers from Canon. I could't get the install.sh files to run - tried ./ sudo and sh etc, no joy. Anyway, I used the package manager to install the .deb files and that seemed to go OK.
The printing side of things works fine but I can't get the scanner recognized by Xsane.......

How would I change the permissions for a specific program(xsane)? For some reason Xsane only works now if I run as root. It was working fine before the latest kernel update, now I get "cannot start scanner: invalid argument" unless I run the program as root. Also images that are scanned are nor accessible unless I am root
Epson Stylus NX215
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
The printing feature works fine still.
Iscan is installed from avasys.jp
Rolled back to old kernel and problem still exists

My HP Deskjet D-2660 will not print. I can print to file but not the printer. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and have no other problems. I have installed hpip and hpijs form HP and cups was made available via and upgrade. I have a lot of data from var/log/cups/error_log but don't know what it is supposed to say.
I can print to file and everything else I check seems to say that all is right. Is there any glaring faults that I should look for?? As I stated on the other post I get a message that the print job has been sent to the printer and then another message stating that the print job has completed. In system/administration/printing, the printer shows up properly and has a green check mark on it. Connected to localhost shows at the bottom of the little window. Under /printer it shows shared and enabled Then under printer/properties, it shows as the HP Deskjet D2600 series the location is given as john-desktop It defines the Device URI: hp:/usb/Deskjet_D2600_series?serial=CN9ANDF0ZT05C9 shows the Make and Model HP Deskjet d2600 Series hpijs,.. printer state: idle
Across the bottom it theoretically allows you to print a test page or clean the print heads. (won't print) On the printing-local host small page that opens under system/administration/printing there is no group under that heading only new group or new group from selection. I never named a group since I am the only user.
I have shut the printer down and disconnected the USB and rebooted. Then connect the power and plug in the USB cable I get all the same answers nothing appears to change. Here is some of the var/log/cups/error_log file. It does this over and over every minute same thing. The print que is empty from both administration and applications.

With Lucid I was capable of scanning both with my Epson Perfection 640 U scanner and with my HP-M1120n-MFP network scanner. To get the HP-M1120n to work I had to rename a file which I do not remenber which was. I do not remember where I found the instructions. I am running HPLIP 3.10.6 with Device Manager 15.0. I did a fresh install of Maverick Beta and I am not able to neither scan with the Epson Perfection scanner nor with the M1120n-MFP. As said, both worked with Lucid. As said I had to rename a file to get the MFP scanner to work. I include screen shots to this post.

The scanner is seen using lsusb command but when i open xsane it is not recognized. Xsane wants to use the webcam instead. I think this happened because i saved the settings of the former scanner a few days ago. Should i delete that setting that is saved in the home>.sane>.xsane directory? The old scanner is a Canon Canoscan lide N1220U and the new one is a Canon Canoscan lide 100. I would appreciate any suggestions as i tried a reboot with no improvement :0)

Whenever I switch on my scanner (Epson V200) then it launches Xsane automatically.
Now I know Xsane is wonderful, but often I want to use Epson's iscan instead, and for other users I prefer Simple Scan. Another thread would be a good place to discuss the reasons.
So I would like to stop my scanner launching anything when switched on.

I have used XSANE for scanning for several years, and it has recently been giving me trouble. It resizes when I copy, and it resizes when I scan into a multipage pdf. It's not drastic, an 8.5 x 11 page gets shrunk down to about 7.5 x 10. I've installed the Gnome scanning utility to get by, but the resolution just isn't as great. I went into Synaptic and marked all the XSane packages for reinstallation and reinstalled them. However, my contrast / gamma settings remained the same, and, as you might guess, whatever is shrinking my output remained the same also.

I have spent a few hours on this, trying various combinations of instructions. The nearest I got was when I followed the instructions from the HPLIP site, but it ended up with telling me some dependencies were not installed. I installed them using the Mintinstall tool, but still no go.
Before I spend any more time on this, I would like to know if there is a user out there who has got this particular printer to run on the Mint 7 distribution? If somebody has, then I know it is at least possible, and I will persevere!

We recent got this printer as the three others are old, hard to maintain, and don't work. However, there's been no end of trouble. We've had to initially install it under Windows, which is no trouble. Intending to put it to wireless use, I've hit a problem. The HP printer tool in Slackware 13.0 claims that CUPS either isn't installed (which it is) or isn't running (which it is)
So I kept it on USB and shared it, providing yet more trouble. Slackware again seems to have trouble with CUPS (using the Printing tool from GSB). Now, Ubuntu Jaunty, the other Linux on the network, can see this printer, but doesn't have a driver for it, meaning it can't use it.
What I'd like to do is switch it to wireless. I can do that, but I don't know what to install on the two Ubuntu PCs to get the HP printer tool, or if on Jaunty, it still needs to be given the drivers for it, and on Slackware, CUPS is the problem (Though may be solved with an install of something else before long)

I tried setting up my printer, HP Deskkjet D2660, using CUPS. I enabled the CUPS service and configure the printer through it. But when I try to test print, my printer wont print.
Now, i tried to look at the net for possible answer and somewhere, I read that my printer needs the newer version of hplip than the one included with the default slackware 13.0 install.
1. Do i really need to update hplip just to make my printer work? Do anyone uses the same printer model and make it work without updating the said package?
2. If i really have to update it, is there any Slackbuild script I can use to make the hplip-3.10.6.tar.gz into slackware package? I prefer creating package than installing using make.
