Feb 21, 2011
I'm trying to get the progress bar from workrave to display properly inside avant window navigator. Does anyone know how to make the full bar appear? At the moment only half the bar appears in AWN's task area.

I'm got ubunt-desktop running VirtualBox. I installed MS XP HOME on a virtual disk. so everything *works* .. but I'd be a lot happier to have the box opened up all the way to my Ubuntu top-and-bottom bars.

I have Bind on the machine at present, but I was wondering how much disk would be needed to make it a full DNS server that could act in place of a dead upstream service.

Firstly i have to inform you that I'm completely new to fedora and linux..
i have an IBM R51 laptop with Pentium M 1.5Ghz, RAM 512mb and intel 855GME graphics. I'd like to install fedora 15 with gnome 3 and take advantage fully of its capabilities! as far as I'm concerned i should upgrade my RAM and graphics.. could you please suggest me an option, for the RAM and the graphics, that will be compatible with my existing hardware? (I'm a bit of an amateur and so i can't really tell the model of the motherboard

I'm trying to add a scheduled full backup to the crontab file, but the full backup never completes; it always stops somewhre in the file system. I guess is b/c the os is updating those files or has them open. I've tried to use the --exclude options but still it always hangs somewhere else.... this is what I'm usingtar -zcvpf /mnt/storage/backup/fullbackup1.tar.gz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/net --exclude=/srv / > /mnt/storage/backup/fullbackup.log

Firstly I've never (successfully) upgraded before using update manager -d but I've only tried once. I'm on 10.10 at the moment but I want to make a full disk backup using Acronis and try out 11.04 beta 1 so if I can't boot (like with the 11.04 Alpha 3) I'm ok.
What I want to know is if I upgrade to beta 1 it will install new things and settings, if beta 2 is released and I upgrade to that (after having beta 1 installed) will it overwrite all the settings again? Or will I be able to spend time set beta 1 up nice how I want it (if it works) and just smoothly upgrade gradually to final 11.04 keeping it pretty much exactly how I want it?
Also with the software sources, I understand I need to disable the ones I manually added before updating from 10.10 then to re-enable them, but how do I re-enable them for Natty as they are currently for Maverick? Do I just change the word Maverick to Natty, or is it better to remove and re-add them for natty? And do the authentication keys need updating or are they ok? I don't really know a lot about the keys.
1 more thing (sorry) will an upgrade overwrite any settings I have e.g. etc/fstab, sudoers, things like that? I know when you upgrade it gives you an option for some things e.g. keep or replace, if I keep old settings from maverick does it matter? Or does 11.04 add new lines/things to these files if I choose replace?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm pretty new been using ubuntu as my only OS for couple months now and most of my time has been spent tweaking settings and I don't want to lose them, or do a clean install when 11.04 final is released as I won't ever be able to remember them all.

It is just a question regarding ISO and the lack of -o loop or function of busybox. One can custom the ISO of debian-installer and make a syslinux config file having : vmlinuz of one normally running installed Debian distro, and keep the initrd of the iso regular debian-installer.I think it may be conflicting the vmlinuz kernel version and the installer of initrd.I am learning, so it may be completely wrong or kernel panic.

I know that you can make it full screen, however it just makes the background OS's background black, and still provides a smaller display. Is it possible to make the guest OS's screen (or display) full size?

I've been Googling all day and cannot find the answer. I find all the "GUI" ways to do it through Gnome and KDE but I'm not using either...I have an EEE PC set to boot up automatically to openbox and want Firefox to start after that in a full screen openbox window.I've tried adding the firefox command to ~/.initrc but it won't execute. I tried the command in .profile. This brings up firefox on a black screen without openbox.Firefox comes up fine when executed from the openbox menu.

Does anyone know how to make VMware player fit to full screen even when the resolution is different than the host's? I've got Windows XP installed on it to play some older games at 640x480 (most of which run surprisingly well), but unfortunately when the resolution of Windows is not the same as Ubuntu, I get a tiny Windows in the middle of the screen, with a huge black border around it.
I have not been able to find anything in the VMware menus to "fit to full screen". The closest is something like "automatically resize guest to host", but when I manually change the res on the guest, it still has the borders.
I have also tried just manually changing the Ubuntu resolution to 640x480 before I run VMWare, but unfortunately the VMware window goes out of the viewable screen area (even in full screen). My best solution so far has been to switch Ubuntu to 800x600, lock VMware at 640x480, and then use the "zoom" function on my monitor to make it almost full screen. Of course, this is less than optimal.
(FYI I am running Xubuntu Studio 9.10, with some nvidia binary drivers installed.. I forget which version)
I have tried a couple of solutions, such as the one suggested here:
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/204564
(pref.autoFitFullScreen = "fitHostToGuest")... With not much luck. I even tried uninstalling VMware tools. Still didn't work.
If I need up add a line in some config files, does anybody know specifically which files it needs to be added to?

In my corporate environment, I'm required to run a Windows machine that acquires a VNC session on a machine in the server farm. My windows machine is dual head with different resolution monitors ( 1600x1080 on left and 1920x1200 on right). If I create a VNC session that spans the monitors, then maximizing a window in the VNC session causes it to stretch across both my monitors.
Instead, I want a "maximize" event to behave like it does on my windows machine -- I only want to maximize to the display that the window is on.
How can I define what, what I'll call, "maximize regions"? Regions in the VNC graphical plane where when I click "maximize", the window only expands to the region it currently ( and mostly) resides in.
Can I do this in gnome, X, xrandr, or some other magical interface?

This obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

My server is showing as 95% full, but when I check any folders underneath and files, they add up to about only a few percentage of the space.
- /tmp - 2GB LUN
- currently using 1.8GB of the 2GB
- files in the directory add up to only 50MB (I've checked for hidden files as well.. 'ls -lah'
Anyway else of telling how /tmp can have so much usage when there appears there is hardly anything in it?
What will happen to the server if /tmp is full?

he clicks on everything on his GNOME desktop, and manages to delete everything, including menus, icons, etc. The people he lives with aren't skilled enough to fix it, and I live a good eight hours away. I have remote capabilities with NX, but that requires them to initiate a connection to my workstation here, which is more painful than I thought it would be. I need a way of locking down the desktop, so it's read-only, so he can't make the changes he seems to keep making. I figure I could make the .gnome directory read-only, but I don't know if that would affect the normal operation.

I need to modify fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c to make my modifications. I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

I build and use a custom kernel, and use the nvidia driver. This is on debian stretch.
By default, I build the image and headers packages with this line:
CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=8 nice -n19 ionice -c3 fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-something --revision=1 kernel_image kernel_headers
These kernel sources are usually the sources from debian, with a couple of more patches that I add. It appears that for nvidia-driver package versions higher than 352.79-1, the kernel headers/sources need to be prepared with 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts'. It's that simple. I concluded this after the nvidia dkms build failed on my custom kernel, but then succeeded after I pointed it to the full sources, but only after running 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts' on them. The problem is that this make-kpkg scheme doesn't appear to do this, or if it does, it doesn't properly include in the headers everything that it should.

When I try to compile some Java code on Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6+) using make and a Makefile.
I get an error indicating that the make utility cannot execute the java compile command (javac).
The error reads: /bin/bash: line 6: .: /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac: cannot execute binary file
I am executing make as root. I have enabled permissions on all directories in the path /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac and on javac itself.
I get this error whether using a jdk installed via ubuntu apt-get, or whether I install the jdk myself. And I get it using either Java 1.5 or 1.6
My machine has an 80386 processor. I notice the make utility is built for i686-pc-linux-gnu
However, I can manually compile using javac.
I can compile calling javac from within a bash script.
I can compile using the java compiler gcj from the command line: gcj --main=HelloWorld HelloWorld.java -o HelloWorld.exe
But I cannot compile java code from the makefile. Any reasons why I might be getting this error?

I have Ubuntu 8.04 on an IBM laptop w/ 18 GB HD & 512 MB RAM - the HD in the past was just half full; today (after not using the laptop for several weeks), I needed 64 or so updates which seemed to progress fine; however on re-booting and checking the disc analyzer, the HD is now 97% FULL! I was wondering if perhaps the updates installed did not clean up previous software leading to many files being left on the HD - I've never ran into this situation before, and would like some advice as to my first steps in figuring out this problem.
