I'm got ubunt-desktop running VirtualBox. I installed MS XP HOME on a virtual disk. so everything *works* .. but I'd be a lot happier to have the box opened up all the way to my Ubuntu top-and-bottom bars.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

I'm running Ubuntu with Sun Virtual Macine on my Mac OSX and I have two problems.Somhow I have managed to get the Ubuntu screen to go completely black with a bash command line in the centre of it and the characters: "tty6" at the top of it. How do I exit this??Also I have a file on this virtual machine. Does anyone know how i would put this on my mac without the use of a Pen drive?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, with the Intel video chip. I have a problem with my virtual consoles/terminals (<ctrl-alt>F1-F6). The default screen resolution was set to 1600x1200 at installation, which results in a nearly microscopic, unreadable font. I posted the problem on this thread on ubuntuforums.org, where they suggested adding GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=640x480 to /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d/00_header. Still no joy--the console screen resolution still was 1600x1200.
I have noticed that the screen resolution changes three times during boot; it starts at standard VGA, 640x480, then switches to 1600x1200, then finally to 1024x768, which is my preferred resolution in X. But, if I switch to a virtual console, the resolution shoots up to 1600x1200 again. There are times when I like to use virtual terminals, and I would like to avoid eyestrain.

After upgrading from 11 -> 12 the resolution of the virtual consoles stays the same, to large. I already compared grub.conf,i18n which are the same. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

The probe doesn't recognize my monitor initially in the video setup. When I choose this screen resolution in the xorgwizard it ignores the resolution I select and uses 1600 x 1200. If I try to reduce the resolution in the resolution changer, it decreases the window size but the desktop stays at the same resolution effectively cutting off the majority of the desktop from view. I have been trying the intel, radeon, vesa, and vmware drivers but none of them seem to work. Do I need to install a special video driver? I am using a unibody macbook.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.

It is stuck on a 1680x1050 resolution and in the system display settings the menus are disabled since there is no detected real display connected.

In my corporate environment, I'm required to run a Windows machine that acquires a VNC session on a machine in the server farm. My windows machine is dual head with different resolution monitors ( 1600x1080 on left and 1920x1200 on right). If I create a VNC session that spans the monitors, then maximizing a window in the VNC session causes it to stretch across both my monitors.
Instead, I want a "maximize" event to behave like it does on my windows machine -- I only want to maximize to the display that the window is on.
How can I define what, what I'll call, "maximize regions"? Regions in the VNC graphical plane where when I click "maximize", the window only expands to the region it currently ( and mostly) resides in.
Can I do this in gnome, X, xrandr, or some other magical interface?

I find all the "GUI" ways to do it through Gnome and KDE but I'm not using either...I have an EEE PC set to boot up automatically to openbox and want Firefox to start after that in a full screen openbox window.I've tried adding the firefox command to ~/.initrc but it won't execute. I tried the command in .profile. This brings up firefox on a black screen without openbox.Firefox comes up fine when executed from the openbox menu.

I've got Windows XP installed on it to play some older games at 640x480 (most of which run surprisingly well), but unfortunately when the resolution of Windows is not the same as Ubuntu, I get a tiny Windows in the middle of the screen, with a huge black border around it.
I have not been able to find anything in the VMware menus to "fit to full screen". The closest is something like "automatically resize guest to host", but when I manually change the res on the guest, it still has the borders.
I have also tried just manually changing the Ubuntu resolution to 640x480 before I run VMWare, but unfortunately the VMware window goes out of the viewable screen area (even in full screen). My best solution so far has been to switch Ubuntu to 800x600, lock VMware at 640x480, and then use the "zoom" function on my monitor to make it almost full screen. Of course, this is less than optimal.
(FYI I am running Xubuntu Studio 9.10, with some nvidia binary drivers installed.. I forget which version)

Two problems
1. On computer start-up it freezes, blank display with no action from the HDD
2. On selecting the HDD from the menu by pressing F12 and then HDD1 I get the same problem.
I can overcome this by changing grub to 'noquiet nosplash nomodeset' but then I get of course the full goomph on the screen. Could this be a display driver problem since I noticed that I can not get the full 1920 x 1200 resolution?
I have two video outs on my AGP video card. One is VGA and the other is S-video. I tried connecting the second monitor (Viewsonic) by itself to the VGA port and it works fine and runs at 1280x768 very clearly. I then attached the LG monitor instead to the VGA and attached the Viewsonic to the S-video port. Now it is running at 1024x768 and I have no option to increase the resolution.Is this a limitation based on S-video being worse than component, which is worse than VGA and it simply cannot handle the data density for larger resolutions? Or would it be my video adapter? I swear I had monitor control working fine through the panel, but now when I click on the monitor button it says, "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?" and that opens an Nvidia X control panel.
Also, using S-video means the computer doesn't recognize the Viewsonic LCD TV properly, it just recognizes it as a TV. Is this because S-video doesn't play nicely with EDID reporting?It would be nice to get a sharp picture on that TV, the way I had when it was connected like a monitor via VGA. I am not sure what's going on anymore, so any help on clearing up driver issues or getting configuration apps installed or anything like that would be helpful.
I used startup-manager to change the timeout of my bootloader from 10 to 3, which it worked, but it also set my resolution for the bootloader and startup (where it shows the ubuntu logo) to 1024x768. how can I change it back to 1366x768, which it originally was when I installed.

Unhelpfully, many menus/dialogs require more resolution than that, so there are buttons off the screen I just can't see/get to. I can't seem to find any setup option that will allow me to do a virtual resolution setting (panning to get the rest of the screen). Am I forced to dive into text editors and config files? Or where should I look in the menu system for this setting?
