View 9 Replies View RelatedI just want to upgrade my Slackware 13.1 kernel (2.6.33.4) to the latest stable kernel from kernel.org (2.6.38.2). I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. I did do a search on this forum and most of what I read was over my head. I found an FAQ on kernelnewbies.org on "How To Apply A Patch" but when I attempted what they suggested, it said it couldn't find the file to patch at line 5 and asked me which file to patch. So I CTRL-Z'd out of there and came here. Here's what I tried:

I get following error during automatic patch upgrade of my SuSE 11.2 to latest path revision. I assume it is due to the KDE 4.3.5 Update part of the patch set: compiz-kde4-0.7.8-9.14.x86_64 requires libkdecorations.so.4()(64 bit) but there are no providers. The package manager suggest to replace compiz-kde4-0.7.8-9.14.x86_64 with kwin-4.3.5-0.2.1.x86_64 but I don't want to loose compiz-kde. which repository I must add to resolve the dependency.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just changed from Fedora 8 to Fedora 10 and I'm having trouble installing a special alternative keyboard driver.
I used to be able to put the driver in the xkb/symbols directory, make entries for it in xkb/rules/base.xml and base.lst, and install with the System menu. Now I find that the Gnome tool no longer seems to be using the base files, and my driver doesn't show up.
Does anyone know where Gnome gets its list of drivers from? Alternatively, can I install it by editing a configuration file?
I need to find out the code where/how hid USB keyboard input redirected to stdout.

I've tried two copies of a: Microsoft Natural ergonomic Keyboard 4000 v1.0 Both fail. The result is my screen fills up with whatever key was missed. Re-pressing the key does no good. I have to unplug the keyboard and then plug it back in. So, I'm interested to know if this is a general problem or just my system. Meanwhile, I'm turning down the key repetition rate so it doesn't immediately fill my screen when it happens.....
Yesterday I applied the su security patch to my openSuSE 11.2 x86_64 system. After applying the patch, any attempt at su failed, and after rebooting the system earlier this morning any login (root, user, otherwise) fails with a "Permission Denied".Is it possible that the su update somehow messed up my (standard) pam settings?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am impressed with 11.4 and am happy that for the first time ever I don't need to install a kernel patch to support my on-board nVidia graphics. However, the on-board sound no longer works now. I don't know how to set it up in phonon. My device number 0 in phonon is MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S high definition audio, and I assume this is my nVidia on-board sound card. The driver information states snd-hda-intel.
How can I check what is wrong with it? It did work fine on 11.2 right up to the 11.4 installation. I do get system sounds (like the start-up and shut-down sounds), but nothing from any application, e.g., firefox playing a video. Based on the advice from another thread I tried: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav This does not produce any sound, but gives the following information: speaker-test 1.0.24.2

Does the Xorg driver used for the keyboard determine the keycodes in X11? the ones seen by xev? The reason I ask is xev used to report my F14 key as 183, now it is 192. I think this happened when i switched to evdev from kbd.
