OpenSUSE Install :: Dependency Error During Patch Upgrade Of KDE 4.3.5 Update

Feb 25, 2010

I get following error during automatic patch upgrade of my SuSE 11.2 to latest path revision. I assume it is due to the KDE 4.3.5 Update part of the patch set: compiz-kde4-0.7.8-9.14.x86_64 requires libkdecorations.so.4()(64 bit) but there are no providers. The package manager suggest to replace compiz-kde4-0.7.8-9.14.x86_64 with kwin-4.3.5-0.2.1.x86_64 but I don't want to loose compiz-kde. which repository I must add to resolve the dependency.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Install A Kernel Patch To Support On-board NVidia Graphics?

Mar 22, 2011

I am impressed with 11.4 and am happy that for the first time ever I don't need to install a kernel patch to support my on-board nVidia graphics. However, the on-board sound no longer works now. I don't know how to set it up in phonon. My device number 0 in phonon is MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S high definition audio, and I assume this is my nVidia on-board sound card. The driver information states snd-hda-intel.

How can I check what is wrong with it? It did work fine on 11.2 right up to the 11.4 installation. I do get system sounds (like the start-up and shut-down sounds), but nothing from any application, e.g., firefox playing a video. Based on the advice from another thread I tried: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav This does not produce any sound, but gives the following information: speaker-test 1.0.24.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576

OpenSUSE Install :: "zypper Lp" Lists Patch With Cannot Be Installed

Apr 30, 2010

I administer a lot of OpenSuSE 11.1 x86_64 machines and one of them has the problem that the command "zypper lp" lists a needed patch for "translation-update", version 532, but then "zypper patch" says that there is nothing to do.

I cannot get rid of this "needed patch", check out these commands I tried:

Code:
machine:/root # zypper lu
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages...
No updates found.

[Code].....

Also note that about 50 other machines use this (mirrored update repository), none of them has this problem. They are all updated correctly, showing "0 needed patches".

General :: Apply Kernel Patch - Couldn't Find File To Patch

Apr 8, 2011

I just want to upgrade my Slackware 13.1 kernel (2.6.33.4) to the latest stable kernel from kernel.org (2.6.38.2). I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. I did do a search on this forum and most of what I read was over my head. I found an FAQ on kernelnewbies.org on "How To Apply A Patch" but when I attempted what they suggested, it said it couldn't find the file to patch at line 5 and asked me which file to patch. So I CTRL-Z'd out of there and came here. Here's what I tried:

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Too Slow On Start Up. OpenSUSE-WindowsXP Dual Boot?

Jul 18, 2011

I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.

After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.

My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?

Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.

OpenSUSE Install :: Update Start But Would Stop Right In The Middle And Refuse To Install Pulseaudio(...) Package

Jun 18, 2010

I have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(...) package... It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.

I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don't think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.

I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem.

OpenSUSE :: 11.2 - Security Patch For Libfreebl3 Conflicts

Oct 27, 2010

I have SuSE 11.2. There is a security patch for Mozilla NSS Library. However, I get told by YaST that the libfreebl3-3241.noarch conflicts with mozilla-nspr.i586. (There's also a patch for glibc but apparently, it is not "willing" to install this without installing the other patch first). Anyway, I did the following: zypper lp and then rpm -qi libfreebl3 and then zypper lr -d.

Here are the results:
Code:
zypper lp
Repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0' is out-of-date. You can run 'zypper refresh' as root to update it.
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages.....

Code:
zypper refresh
Repository '11.2' is up to date.
Repository 'Education' is up to date.
Repository 'Printing' is up to date.
Retrieving repository 'games' metadata [done]
Building repository 'games' cache [done]
Retrieving repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0' metadata [done]

Repository 'mozilla/openSUSE_11.2' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-11.2-Non-Oss' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-11.2-Oss' is up to date.

All repositories have been refreshed. I don't know what to do. In order to update FireFox, (on Aug 1, 2010) I had to do as posted in this thread: (instructions by caf4926) Updating firefox. So, I followed these directions: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing. Now what do I do?

OpenSUSE Install :: Fresh Install Of 11.3 Won't Start

Aug 20, 2010

I downloaded the iso from the webpage and used the live cd option. From there I chose install and proceeded to install the OS. Everything went fine and I got a message that the system would need to restart without the live cd. I saw the chameleon with the white growing line under (which seemed to run to it's completion) and then I came to a screen mostly white with three option buttons in the bottom right corner and my mouse with the waiting symbol spinning in the middle of the screen. Basicly the symbols stops spinning after a little while and the system hangs. I have tried starting in fail safe mode and run level 3 with the same result. My laptop is a MSI GX740

Edit: I have tried both ubuntu and mint earlier today and those Live CDs wouldn't even start. Also I am using the CD size Gnome ISO. Maybe some of the content on the dvd iso would provide support for my HW?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Get X To Start In 11.2

Jun 11, 2010

My videocard, a Radeon HD2900GT from Sapphire has some kind of legendary hate with a new-ish version of Xorg. If I install 11.1, it works fine until I get it to update (haven't gone as far as installing it and stepping versions manually... yet). SuSE 11.2 had never even gotten past installation for me. Having recovered my tower after quite a while away, I decided to regain my linux legs as well. SuSe, as usual didn't work. I ran to Fedora 13 and got it to work, albeit with no support for 3D acceleration. Troubleshooting there, though served as a means of reacquainting myself with the console, X, and linux as a whole. But since Fedora never managed to satisfy me as a distro, I decided to come back to SuSE and use my recently acquired tricks to try and get SuSE to at least install and boot. With the plan being to try and install flgrx once I get the chance. After a lot of trying I managed to shut down X at installation by not installing xorg-x11-driver-video and xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd. This forced the configuration part of the installation to run in text mode, allowing me to get into a text system. Within that I tried then Zypping those packages back in and seeing if I could get X to start. Then started the strange part. SuSE never had an xorg.conf, so I generated one with (#) "Xorg-configure". I then went into the generated file, but even if I change my vga driver to "vesa" withing that one, "Xorg -config /root/xorg.conf.new" will not get X to start.
