My desktop pc was messing up bad and i had too take out the hard drive and put it in my other desktop it works great but theres one thing it dont see my video card how can i get it too look for it? it was a nVidia and now Video adapter Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950.
View 8 RepliesI have been trying to install Ubuntu on my main computer for some time. I think I have two problems: my hard drive and video card. I started with Ubuntu 9.04 but got nowhere. I am now trying Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit. I can at least use the live cd if I put the video on safe mode. Just in case you are wondering, I have tried other distros: Fedora, OpenSUSE, Slitaz, Wolvix, etc. Only Slitaz and Ubuntu 9.10 works on a live cd.
Information on my computer:
OS: Trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 32bit
Motherboard: ASUS M3A78
CPU: AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core
Video Card: Galaxy Geforce 9500 GT 1GB 128 bit DDR2 (Nvidia) Hard Drive: Hitachi 1 TB Sata Drive 3 Gb/sec 7200 RPM Ram: 4 GB (I think, its been awhile since I built this thing) DVD Burner: LG I think I have two problems: the Sata Hard Drive and the Video Card. When I go to install it, I can get to the install menu but from there all I get is a blank screen. I have tried to put the video in safe mode then install it but I get the same result: a blank screen.
How do I know if Ubuntu recognize the Hard Drive and Video Card? I tried the mount command to see what it sees but I didn't notice any Sata Drives. I was told that I may have to do something with the kernel so it will recognize my Hard Drive. How would I do that?
I have been working on this for awhile now. On a side note, does it matter which Sata Plug the hard drive is on? Right now I have it on the 1st one but I would like to move it to the second one because I want a dual boot system. And yes I know I can use the same hard drive but I would like to keep them separated and use a switch to pick which OS system to use.
While running on the Live Cd, Ubuntu seems to know about my video card and ask to install some drivers but then it asked to be rebooted and it came back up not recognizing anything; video card and hard drive that is. On the live cd I ran the following commands: lswh, lspci, mount, and df. I am not too sure if they will show if the hard drive and the video card are working since I did them on the Live CD. Also on the lspci command, I did this after Ubuntu loaded the driver for the card.

i installed Fedora 12 on an external hard drive. Everything went fine with the installation and it was working perfectly until i tried to install my video card drivers. I have done this many times before and it has worked. I have an ATI card. Anyway after installing the driver i rebooted and now when it starts it show the loading bar on the bottom but then nothing happens its just a black screen!. The worst part is that when i go into windows and my external is plugged in windows wont read it and i have very valuable data on it. I go into disk management and it shows up but windows says that its empty. which is obviously not true because Fedora starts to boot. I really just want Fedora off my external and for windows to read my external with all the files still on it. Is there a way to get by that blank screen?

View 2 Replies View RelatedHave you ever used an SD card as a substitute for a hard drive? The target machine is an MSI "nettop," more or less equivalent to a couple of netbooks glued together. It has dual Atom CPUs, 2 GB RAM, an optical drive, and a bunch of other ports and connectors not usually found on netbooks but standard on a desktop machine (thus the "nettop" moniker). So this is no powerhouse computer, but Ubuntu should run decently on it.
That's the thing: the machine has no hard drive. Instead, it has an 8 GB SDHC card. While the card is a "Class 10," and therefore well above average for an SD card, it's proving to be a poor substitute for a real hard drive. I'm working on the machine for a friend, and I think I'm going to have to recommend he spring for a new SATA HDD. Installing Ubuntu 10.04 from a CD-ROM to the SDHC card took forever. At least there was ample space (just try cramming Windows 7 into 8 GB!).
Similarly, the first round of updates took almost all day to install. The system is very sluggish in general, more so than is normal for a netbook-class machine, based on my experience with Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire One D150. I suspect that the basic problem is the glacial speed of the SDHC card compared to a SATA hard drive. Although the SDHC card is rated for 20 MB/s reads, that's nowhere near even a slow SATA hard disk.
Write speed is likely a lot slower even than that, which perhaps explains the hours and hours required to install Ubuntu + updates. It seems as if launching apps is slow as well - again, probably a symptom of the SDHC card's sluggish reads, compared to a SATA HDD. Are there any secret tricks to make running Ubuntu off an SDHC card more bearable? Or should I just tell my friend he needs to buy a regular HDD?
I got a laptop from a friend. For some reason, it loaded the grub off of an SD card (He was running Xubuntu), so I tried re-installing Ubuntu itself on the hard-drive, completely ignoring the SD card. It wont work. The guy who sold the laptop to me took a look at it, and he's alright with Linux, but he can't figure out what's wrong with it. I tried adding my own partition tables, and they look something like this:

sda2 /home 130G
sda3 SWAP 10G
I know it's more swap than I should have, but I plan on upgrading the RAM.Anyways, we're both completely lost. I think we want it to load a grub menu at this point because one isn't loading.
I need to be able to schedule and automate the recording process, to record DV with audio directly to the hard drive. Can anyone tell me if this is possible with linux? Can anyone suggest hardware/applications that would work to accomplish this? This is not for security purposes. This is to record classes that will be made available online.

I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.
what can i do? is there a log file for X which details the initialization of it?
I am wanting to replace the hard drive on my laptop with a Compact Flash Card. I bought a card and a adapter, but I am seeing that there are a lot of downsides to this (e.g. the card is slower, writes should be conserved because of limited write cycles, etc..) plus, in order to change the hard drive in my laptop (ibook g3 clamshell) you literally have to disassemble the entire thing! I mainly wanted to do this project to increase my battery life. However, some people say that it doesn't make much of a difference, while others say it is wonderful. So, to those that have done this mod, how much of a difference did it make for you?

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

One more thing I have 16 gig flash drive and on debian and debian based distros i can only use 13.1 gigs of it but on fedora I can use all 16 gigs.

If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

I pulled out a dying AGP card to try and switch to onboard video, and I think the previous configuration is gumming up the works.I've been running this system for quite a while, as you'll be able to tell from the version numbers.Would like to avoid having to transport my Amarok databases to a new server. I make heavy use of the song ratings and whenever I try to transport the database from the old system to a fresh build I have to spend hours relearning sql commands.Any ideas how to either fix the resolutions on the ATI or (preferably) get KDE to start on the onboard graphics?

but my ubuntu 10.04 32-bit system still won't boot. Shortly after the ubuntu logo comes up, before the login, my screen goes black and there is no more video signal. What else can I do to reset the video configuration? The card only has this info on it: I could put the card back in the system, reboot, and then pre-configure the system to drop to the intel 865G on-board video, but the msi card has intermittent problems and will spontaneously re-boot several times during the first ten minutes of turning on the system.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.
I've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...

I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.
